Corrections/Alternate Versions for Flags v2?

Post by Minstrel »

Well it is best to let the locked thread be as it no longer actually involves the project...

So here is a thread for if people found someone who has a wrong flag for example; please add that information here.

I only checked to see that the game would display flags correctly for countries that have players that appear in the game (by going to player search and searching for all players) so there is potential for errors in lesser known countries and I'm not even sure if there is actually a way to check if their flag graphic is displaying correctly :dunno: So I need help if you can give it

This is mainly an errors thread however, not a design issue thread. For example the Russian flag is not an error as such, it is how the original source image creator Jeff Riddolls chose to address a design issue. Some flags are rotated horizontally, specifically countries with tri-color flags like Russia and Germany. However he choose to present and crop or rotate any of these flag images is then a design issue not an error.

I realize some people don't like or prefer that approach, and I might consider re-orienting them as alternates for people to have that choice in the v2 set. Those flags as they appear however don't represent a flag error. A flag arror would be: "The set has Mexicos flag as containing a big taco icon in the center: not only is that wrong, I think it's stereotypical and racist." :-x (for those of you who don't know that is me being humorous using an intentionally over the top example to make people chuckle... just to be clear)

In file comments coolstuff mentioned the matter of China and Chinese Taipai so I'll look into that, please post if you find any others that need changing/updating if a flag has changed for example.

Also, if you list the horizontally oriented flags you'd like to have an alternate vertical version of created I can work on them as well and will include them with an update, for example "alt.rus.png" for Russia. That still presents the set's default view with some flags oriented horizontally as Jeff originally designed them and gives people who prefer them to be the other way the option to use the alt versions instead. Cool?

Yes cool. Alternate things are always good especially if you have to do some hard chooses (not sure about the english)

I hope that doesn't sound like me being a jerk  I only say that because I didn't make the decisions on the original sources, so replacing them in the file isn't my place. Who am I to over-ride his design decisions? Kind of like if someone posted a story and I decided that a different character should be the main character of the story. I didn't write it so I have no right to alter it.

I am willing to work on the alternate and corrections set though, not that we'll have any players from Chinese Taipai or play against the Olympic team from Chinese Taipai but we should have the most current flag :-D

Just to clearify, Chinese Taipei has the correct flag rit now as it is, China has the correct flag as well, but Burma (not China) has the same flag as Chinese Taipei (aka Taiwan).

p.s. I would love an alternate version of the flags, I think its better to show the whole flag instead of cropped, and would like them to be smaller too. But that's just my opinion. ;)

Just to throw my 2 cents in, I like the flags as they are.

If you'd like smaller ones that show the whole flag not cropped, they'd look exactly like the ones currently in the game... ;)

The cropping is what allows these ones to be larger, because the available file size is the same as are available for the 'small' logos for teams; they're 50 wide but only 19 tall. So to keep to proportion the ones in the game end up being 18 wide by 12 tall. So... :-k we have 32 pixels to add to the width but only 7 to add to the height :tiptap: leading to the cropped look because he made them as wide as possible and worked from there.

In my conversion from his originals which were 70 by 20 (an earlier dimension just for flags during testing that fell to bugs on the schedule pages... answering why he never published that version) I actually kept them smaller than the allotted size to in effect create a clear border of 2 pixels all the way around each so they don't stack on top of each other on the roster screen.

Decisions decisions.... :-D

I think I found the solution for the Burma and Chinese Taipei flag problem. Apparently, the country of Burma was also known as Myanmar. In the flag project there's Burma AND Myanmar both in it, but only the flag coded mya has the right flag, the flag coded bur has Chinese Taipei's flag.

The changes should be: switch mya flag with bur flag and delete mya completely, since EHM05 only has Burma as the country name and no Myanmar.

Hope this help with flag version 2. :)

I also counted the number of countries in EHM05 and there are 208 countries (correct me if I'm wrong). So there should be 8 countries that's without a flag.

Thanks for figuring out the Burma thing

I've just been approximating to 200; the set actually has 215 I think??
