Just finished my first season with 0.2b, I'll post some results too, but first some observations:

In the AHL, both Tulsa and Cape Breton are called Oilers, and in the ECHL, both LA and Tidewater are called Sharks; I'd suggest something should be done about this - either swap, say, Cape Breton and LA between leagues, or change their short names to e.g. Oilers (T), Oilers (CB) etc.

Portland Buckaroos, Salem Raiders and San Diego Hawks have the shortname same as longname. Same thing with St. Catherine's Black Hawks, except their shortname is longer than the longname - "St. Catherine's Black HawksSCBH".

Some of the minor league teams should have their fan support adjusted - Fort Wayne Komets should probably be 'hardcore', Kalamazoo Wings and Flint Generals probably should be 'passionate', etc.

Cleveland Crusaders - the arena is listed as being in Richfield, MN, it should be Richfield, OH.

Some caps names - JIRI Rambousek, PETR Vrba, HAROLD Sjolund, HARRY Lemieux.

Don Cherry's birthplace is shown as Franklin, MA (American nationality), should be Kingston, ON (Canadian nationality).

Al Hill's nationality is CAN/CAN.

Peter McNab, Don Borgeson and a few others show up as rookies?

Colours - LA should be looked at; it uses the purple as the away colour, so when LA plays at Cleveland, both teams are in purple.

There are two identical copies of Claude Noel.

So, now my season info:

I have just the NHL running as playable, took control of the Cleveland Crusaders.

2006-2007

The New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Cleveland Crusaders 4-1.

(New York beat Boston (4-1), Montreal (4-3) and Philadelphia (4-0) to get to the final, Cleveland beat California (4-1), Calgary (4-0) and Chicago (4-1) to reach the final).

Yvan Cournoyer set a points in a game record (3g, 6a, 9p) vs Seals in game 3 of the first round. Oddity: this shows up as a record in the league's history, player section, but does not show up in the team's records page...

Trophies:
Calder - Pekka Rautakallio (Crusaders) (runners-up: Bob Bourne (Islanders), Charlie Simmer (Golden Seals)).
Hart - Larry Robinson (Canadiens) (runners-up: Larry Lund (Aeros), Jacques Lemaire (Flyers)).

I agree some work needs to be done, but I’m pretty much not touching team names right now (I’m currently working on compiling data and editing NHL Staff, as well as further editing to AHL/CHL Players and NHL players)…I’m putting off team editing until July (the recent crash issue might/seems to connect to team division and/or team affiliation editing, so I haven’t rushed to redo it)

XenHL wrote: Some of the minor league teams should have their fan support adjusted - Fort Wayne Komets should probably be 'hardcore', Kalamazoo Wings and Flint Generals probably should be 'passionate', etc.
Agreed! I’ll be looking at doing such editing for NHL, Minor Pro and Major Junior teams in July/August…

XenHL wrote:Cleveland Crusaders - the arena is listed as being in Richfield, MN, it should be Richfield, OH.
Hmmm…I can’t see where I can pick between the two (or more) States…in the PreGame Editor on the Arenas Tab my selection is “Richfield (United States)”

XenHL wrote: Some caps names - JIRI Rambousek, PETR Vrba, HAROLD Sjolund, HARRY Lemieux.
Yep! Archi fixed most but not all; I do intend on weeding these out eventually…

Fixed!

At of the the start of the 1974-74 season McNab had only played 22 NHL games and Borgeson had played 0 NHL games…wouldn’t that make them rookies?

Cleveland’s Home Colours are Black/Purple 2/White for Foreground/Background/Trim…..I’m not really sure exactly how this works, but shouldn’t Cleveland be (primarily) in white for their home games?

Thanks very much for the feedback and the results! :-)

Hmm. Well, what I'd suggest is look in the Cities tab... there may well be two 'Richfield's there, IIRC there's a menu in which you can specify state there. If so, easiest thing to do would probably be to temporarily rename one to something easy to find (e.g. 0Richfield) - ideally the one you want to set for the arena's location - and then set the arena's location, then go back and rename the city.

Okay, wasn't sure... I think it was because of their age that I was surprised? Can't remember now.

Background is the colour you see in-game as the 'main' colour.

In my experience, regardless of what you set for 'home' and 'away' colours, the game will always take the non-white colour (i.e. the dark colour) as the 'home' scheme, so it works out to be a reverse of what you saw in the 70s/80s with white home and coloured away kit - that is, it's just like it is now in reality. As far as I can tell, this is a limitation that we'll just have to live with.

So that said, Cleveland having Black/Purple 2/White for their home colours is fine; LA is the one with the issue. Perhaps try reversing the colour schemes (as in, what's set as Home colours now, change that to 'Away', and vice versa). That /should/ help, in theory, since it's giving yellow (light) as LA's home colour now, and purple as the road colour...

The Kalamazoo Wings were a brand new franchise in 1974. I wouldn't put their fan devotion up where it currently is or was through the 80's and 90's in the IHL. Things were still very uncertain if it would work.

Fort Wayne also hit some lean years in the 70's and 80's. For instance, the 74-75 Komets finished with all of 26 Wins in 76 games, ahead of only Kalamazoo (expansion) and Lansing (who folded midseason), and had 4 losing seasons between '74 and '78. I wouldn't put them at Hardcore though. I also wouldn't punish them TOO much because they were far worse for fans in the 80's (bad enough the team relocated to Albany) due to inept ownership.

I admittedly have no idea where to put the Flint fanbase. Flint's fanbase has always been pretty hardcore, but not always had the money to support them. I'd put Flint and Fort Wayne as "Passionate" and Kalamazoo as a step below still for being brand new. Just my opinion.

Well, my second season is done, but first, here are some more observations:

Rod Langway's birthplace should be Taipei, and should have only American nationality (grew up in Massachusetts).

San Diego's arena should be called San Diego Sports Arena (capacity 12,920 seated)

Paul MacLean - birthplace is correct (Grostenquin, France), but he should have only Canadian nationality. Verified this - he was born on the RCAF base and moved to Canada at age 2.

I've found that it's fairly frequent that you offer a European player a contract, and he'll jump ship and come over to the NHL immediately - sometimes even when there's no release clause present! However, I did notice one odd thing: I repeatedly tried to sign Marian Stastny, but despite having drafted him I couldn't sign him - he'd accept the contract, and then a message would come up saying something about the deal collapsing because the transfer window is closed, and that the next window opens on that day (as in, the day I get the message!). So maybe there's something about Stastny's contract that might be useful to apply to players from communist countries?

Though for my part, I kinda like the 'what if' aspect of it, see how the Soviet and Czech greats would've affected things in the NHL had they been here in their primes (I suspect Larionov would be spoken of in the same sentences as Gretzky and Lemieux...)

Fairly random observations - but Rejean Houle and Dennis Sobchuk seem to be pretty unproductive, perhaps their attribs should be looked at?

Pekka Rautakallio is perhaps a little bit overrated? Calder in 06-07, Norris in 07-08 (leading all D-men in goals and points), whereas Bobby Orr has been consistently under-productive. But that said, I get the impression the game doesn't really allow for defencemen to put up Orr or Coffey type numbers?

(BOS - East QF vs Maple Leafs 4-3; East SF vs Islanders 4-1; East F vs Flyers 4-2)

(My Crusaders lost in West SF in 7 games against the Golden Seals. :( Ah well, next year!)

Calder: Barry Beck (Rockies) <Glen Sharpley (North Stars), Mike Bossy (Blues)> *
Hart: Pekka Rautakallio (Crusaders) <Pete Stemkowski (Rangers), Bob Bourne (Islanders)> **
Selke: Clark Gillies (Islanders) <Ted Irvine (Rangers), Cliff Koroll (Blackhawks)> ***
Norris: Pekka Rautakallio (Crusaders) <Jack Brownschidle (Blues), Brad Park (Crusaders)>**
Vezina: Bernie Parent (Flyers) <Rogie Vachon (Kings), Vladislav Tretiak (Crusaders)>
Conn Smythe: Rogie Vachon (Kings) <Juha Widing (Kings), Phil Esposito (Bruins)>

* - Sharpley had 82 points, Bossy had 81, and Peter Stastny led all rookies with 95 points - a bit odd Stastny wasn't in the top 3! But kinda nice to see that it goes well beyond simply points output in determining who wins!

** - This fits with something I noticed playing with the 1979 db: if one of my defencemen wins the Norris, he /always/ wins the Hart as well.

*** - Gillies again! I noticed Gillies won in Nino's game too... in my longest-running game with the 1979 db (last season I played was 2013-14), Gillies won the Selke every season he played...

1st All-Star Team
Bernie Parent (Flyers)
Pekka Rautakallio (Crusaders) - Larry Robinson (Canadiens)
Bob Bourne (Islanders) - Larry Lund (Aeros) - Pete Stemkowski (Rangers)

2nd All-Star Team
Rogie Vachon (Kings)
Denis Potvin (Islanders) - Barry Beck (Rockies)
Charlie Simmer (Golden Seals) - Juha Widing (Kings) - Frank Hughes (Roadrunners)

All-Rookie Team
Pete Peeters (Oilers)
Barry Beck (Rockies) - Stefan Persson (Kings)
Kent Nilsson (Crusaders) - Glen Sharpley (North Stars) - Peter Stastny (Crusaders)

October ISS ranking
1. Bobby Smith C/LW
2. Stan Smyl RW/LW
3. Rod Langway RD/LD
4. Ken Linseman C/RW
5. Gordie Roberts LD/RD
6. Mario Marois LD/RD
7. Don Maloney LW
8. Tony Currie RW/LW
9. Ryan Walter C
10. Randy Pierce RW/LW

2008 NHL Draft
1. North Stars - Gordie Roberts LD/RD (ranked: 4) (from Senators)
2. Oilers - Bobby Smith C/LW (1)
3. Mariners - Ken Linseman C/RW (5)
4. Penguins - Paul MacLean LW/RW (7) (from North Stars)
5. Nordiques - Stan Smyl RW/LW (3)
6. Red Wings - Richie Dunn RD (12)
7. Whalers - Tony Currie RW/LW (23)
8. Cowboys - Ryan Walter C (9)
9. Capitals - Sergei Makarov RW/LW (16)
10. Bulls - Viacheslav Fetisov LD/RD (14)

I have to say I was quite surprised at being able to pick Rod Langway at 12th overall (he was ranked 2nd!). The shuffle in picks up there was my fault. I'd got Ottawa's first-round pick early in the season, and at the start of the draft I noticed Bobby Smith was ranked 1st, so I traded the pick to Minnesota for their pick, figuring they'd take Smith and there'd be a mirror of reality there... and then they didn't. Then I traded down again for Pittsburgh's pick, figuring Bengt-Ake Gustafsson would still be around at 12th, but he wasn't (went 11th to Seattle), but Langway is plenty good as a consolation pick! Couple of amusing picks - the Nordiques got the wrong brother - Dave Hunter went to Quebec, and the Habs made it three generations by picking Dan Geoffrion.

Fixed! (thanks to Manimal too!)

XenHL wrote:San Diego's arena should be called San Diego Sports Arena (capacity 12,920 seated)
I haven’t yet got to arena review/editing (and I think I lost a lot of what I’d recently done when the crash issue was resolved)…I’ll be looking at this in the near future!

XenHL wrote:Rejean Houle and Dennis Sobchuk seem to be pretty unproductive, perhaps their attribs should be looked at? Pekka Rautakallio is perhaps a little bit overrated?
I’m really looking forward to further editing individual NHL Player Attributes…perhaps after I’ve done more such editing these players and others will be better represented (I’ve noticed the Rautakallio issue myself)

XenHL wrote:Gillies won the Selke every season
Bizarre eh! At least now I have a template for what the game considers a great defensive forward! HaHa
I’ll be looking closer at Gillies’ Attributes for sure when I get to editing the NHL Player Attributes some more …

So maybe there's something about Stastny's contract that might be useful to apply to players from communist countries?
Nothing stands out to me about Marian Stastny`s contract or Attributes… in my testing I've noticed myself things like sometimes Tretiak stays in Russia and other times he comes to the NHL [even though in each test he has the same low Adaptability (1), high Loyalty (20), and no NHL Release Clause!] - it truly seems to be random at this point (i.e. they all have the same low Adaptability/high Loyalty, etc. and it seems each time you start a new game different players may be willing to come to NA); I want to look closer at some point and try to determine roughly what percentage of players stay in their home country and what percentage leave for NA (and if possible maybe notice if anything seems to influence the end result)

XenHL wrote:it's fairly frequent that you offer a European player a contract, and he'll jump ship and come over to the NHL immediately……….Though for my part, I kinda like the 'what if' aspect of it
I think I understand what you’re saying regarding the “what if” aspect…I just wanted it as an option! Not the only choice!
I imagined myself playing a dozen careers “realistically” and then I too would be looking to allow a wide open, modern marketplace style system...
And for me there’s so much emotionally that isn’t satisfied with the end result; my nostalgia is much less, and playing as a European/Russian club team is less appealing – I have no idea why the NHL so often gets to trump contracts from other professional leagues in EHM! This baffles me! Even without an NHL Release Clause still a European/Russian contract is so often meaningless! Grrrr…

FYI I posted in the general 1974 db about what I’m currently working on http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 32#p142432

Well, this is how the game is set up. Hard-coded things, I guess.
Have you played around with league reputations?

Yes, but I haven't yet fully accompanied league reputation changes with things like appropriate team attributes (i.e. club reputation), appropriate team budget/player salary, etc (I also wonder if the lack of player history plays a part)

FYI One of the things I'm considering is how to deal with retirements (like Ken Dryden in his prime in 1979) and injuries (like Bobby Orr by 1976...or Bernie Parent in 1979) - I was at one point in time leaning towards including these in the extra_config file (and I wondered how well the extra_config file worked), and in my most recent test I noticed these same players still playing well beyond when they did IRL (and I thought "I'll fix that!")...but now I'm kinda thinking if "what if" is the only choice for Europeans/Russians, perhaps I should be allowing for NA "what if" as well...

Sorry I've been AWOL on this version but I've got a basement bedroom reno project that has to be done before guests arrive and there are only so many weekends...... some electrical, drywall(just finished taping this morning) painting, flooring and baseboards and trim. I'm afraid my weekends are booked till August but if I can I will try to get a bit of testing done somehow. I'm certainly following things so I can at least have an idea where everything is at :)

I'm in the 2012-13 season and Butch Goring has 70 points in 40 games on a bad team. Might want to lower his attributes. He wasn't that good. Also saw Gilles getting 70 goals, which would never happen with him. Not like he's Bossy.

Additional observations/thoughts I've had when testing the 1974 database...

I think some "stars" of the era seemingly need an Attribute boost...people like Bobby Hull, Gilbert Perreault, Lanny McDonald, Darryl Sittler and Borje Salming...

Bob Bourne is overrated, as is Clark Gillies (and apparently so is Butch Goring; thanks for the feedback Moses!)...Bobby Orr still needs to be better...

There are still all cap names needing removal (like ALEKSANDR)...

The California Seals are overrated, the Cleveland Crusaders a bit underrated...

Mostly I'm pretty happy with the database right now!
It works! And the famous/expected names are (in general) leading in stats as expected...top teams are top teams, and the names of the top draft picks are historical players many years after start-up! In my most recent test Gretzky lead the NHL in scoring in 2016-17!

One more thing. You may want to tinker with the cap somehow. It makes the CPU do some extremely dumb trades. Cournoyer is always traded from the Montreal and they have become a shell of what they should be only 7 years into the game. Maybe remove it?

And Mike Zuke should probably be a little worse than he is. He had a good 3 year stretch in the NHL and that's all. His attributes make him a decent 2nd line center, but he really is more of a 3rd line quality guy.

Good to know!
The db is of course a work in-progress...I'm looking to edit Team Attributes (like Budget) and Staff Attributes (like GM Judgement) first, which I plan to do soon...AND THEN I want/need to edit Player Salary too (currently the computer decides start-up salary amounts)...IMO only after all this is done will the db truely be ready for a good/fair test in regards to the Salary Cap and/or CPU trades

AFAIK the cap is something most easily edited in a saved game editor. I haven't bothered yet because I started this game just as a "throwaway" test, but once I start a "serious" game I'll be removing the cap (and floor) right after creating the game.

As for trades, I don't know if the cap is really the thing that causes these idiotic trades... in my big game on the 1979 DB I removed the cap straight away, yet teams still made dinlow trades, trading their best players, etc... the other thing that really bugs me is teams seldom offering new contracts to players during the season, and instead waiting till free agent day to offer an extension, and often then the player jumps to another team. All these 1 and 2 year contracts, players playing for a different team each season... bleh. Oh well, I doubt there's anything that can be done about these... this is all AI and thus hardcoded...

The easiest way to change the cap is in the transfer_rules_config file before starting a game

Greetings!

If there's anyone out there that would be interested/willing and has the time to test the current version of the 1974 db, please let me know! If you PM me and give me your email address, I'll zip up a copy of the current version and send it to you!

A lot of work has been done since last September, and I'd like some testing if possible

RE “what to look for while testing”
Short answer - Playing as an NHL team is what needs to be tested.

The 1974 db is not yet playable outside of the NHL (and maybe Major Junior).
Currently the 1974 database focuses on the following Leagues
- NHL, AHL and CHL (all other NA Pro Leagues, like the ECHL, are empty of players/staff at start-up)
- Major Junior (WHL, OHL, QMJHL)

Here’s what was done as of last September (a culmination of over two years work!)
•Created a historical NHL from 1974 by combining the two North American pro leagues (NHL/WHA) from 1974.
•Created historical AHL by combining 27 historical minor pro teams from 1974.
•Created a historical CHL (14 of 16 teams) by using the remaining historical minor pro teams from 1974.
•Historical NHL staff! Many created from retired players to increase the number of assistant coaches and scouts.
•AHL/CHL players 100% populated with historical (minor pro) players.
•Major junior teams (WHL-OHL-QMJHL) 100% populated with historical players.
•Created hundreds of historical "minor hockey" players who are age 1-16 at game start-up (used these players to populate the Mite, Tyke, Atom, Novice, PeeWee, Bantam and PreJunior "minor hockey" leagues I created).
•Correct Stanley Cup, league/team records and individual awards (Art Ross, Vezina, etc) history.
•Correct NHL and WHA history/stats for all NHL players.
•Some historical Europeans/Russians players (about 100 total).
•Free agent modern players and staff have been deleted! As have modern Players/Staff from European/Russian Elite First Division/Junior!
•Significant review and editing of player and staff attributes.

Here’s what’s been done since last September
• Fixed a number of issues last fall after release (including deleting the remaining “weird names”)
• I've added the Draft info/NHL Rights and edited the PAs of all AHL players. Previously minor pro players all had a PA of -5 (max 100) and previously no minor pro players were connected to an NHL team
• Created hundreds of additional Major Junior players/staff
• Thanks to XenHL's efforts, added complete player history for approx 17 minor pro teams and added the non-NHL player history for about 15 NHL teams. Previously only NHL players had player history, and previously only NHL/WHA stats were entered (now Junior/College as well as Minor Pro player history is included)
• Deleted all modern players/staff (the default db has 43,711 players/staff, the 1974 db currently has 4,180 players/staff)

It’s the last point that has me wanting some testing to occur before a 2nd release. Last September the 1974 db had 33,229 players/staff, currently there are only 4,180 players/staff in the 1974 db…the game does seem to create about 4,000 staff at start-up, but not players, so I’m wondering…is playing as an NHL team using the 1974 db still enjoyable/playable at this point in development?
I’m also wondering if any NHL player records are incorrect (I’m wondering if the player/staff deletions and weird name fixes have affected the names list)

Work-in-Progress

While it is going slowly, I'm currently in the process of adding hundreds of historical European/Russian players (currently just a basic “player shell” is being created). I’ve already added historical players/staff for 10 Finnish teams, 10 Swedish teams and 5 Czech teams. I’ve got a few more Czech teams, a few Slovak teams and about a dozen Russian teams still to do…AND I’ve got “Junior” players still to add for the above mentioned nations! Most teams have a handful of Juniors

I’m also looking to add hundreds of historical US College players! I long ago completed the initial prep work, just need the time to input the players!
AND I’d like to add historical Minor Pro Staff!

So LOTS still to do! I’m hoping that I can get the “shells” of all the players/staff mentioned above inputted before the summer, and I’ll be looking to do more detailed player/staff editing this summer.

ALSO I’ll mention that when he can find the time Archi will be creating a Random Name Generator tool , and I plan to use it to better populate the 1974 DB where needed with fake (slightly below average CA) players.

Regards :-)
