I am curious how you decide which players are the key, or core or whatever. In other words does it have to do with the style you want to play the Attributes or what.

Key-Top star players on your roster (Top line forwards, 1-2 dmen, starting goalie)
Core-2nd set dmen 3-4, 2nd line forwards, sometimes starting goalie
Depth-the rest of em.

I don't think it really makes any difference at this point. When resigning players I just leave it at depth and it doesn't appear to matter..

Sometimes changing a young player's status to "Hot Prospect" will trigger the AI to be interested in that player. Also, changing status for a player too often or changing it after signing him to a contract will sometimes make the player angry.

I usually have around 4-5 players that are Key, 3-4 that are core, a bunch of depth players, and a few hot prospects. I rarely use the "Backup" status, in my mind those players are not needed instead.

As far as the OP's question, it really has nothing to do with style of play, it is more closely related to the player's role on the team.
