I don't know who the scorers are but I hear we're 2-0 up in the first. Go Phoenix! :joy:

Edit: Strange that that's the latest update I could get hold of if the game started an hour ago :-k

4-3 Steelers at the end apparently.

i went to the Game at Sheffield, and it was AWESOME.. However one issue with the Manchester players... Calm Down, its only a game.. Thowing the scorer of the 6th goal to the floor is unnessesary, just smack him in the face and take whats coming, don't bottle it, thoropww him down and try to skate off (right into Clouthier..oops!! Mwahahha)

Aye 4-3 to the Steelers ](*,) Apparently one of the goals involved a Steelers player kicking the puck into his own net - oops! The highlights are up on the Phoenix site but I haven't had time to watch them yet.

Belfast are currently top of the league (half of the games they've played they have won in OT!), one point ahead of Nottingham. Cardiff are third with Hull and Sheffield and Coventry next in the table. Manchester are 7th at the moment.

This weekend saw Manchester play their first Challenge cup game this season, hosting last season's elite league winners Belfast Giants in a game that finished 2-2. Ryan Watson put Phoenix 1-0 up after 16 minutes, however Mark Dutiame levelled it just before the first hooter. The 2nd period bought another 2 goals, with Jason Ruff putting the Giants ahead but Phoenix's Czech D-man David Vychodil scored to level things up. Manchester piled the pressure on in the last period hoping to take an advantage with them when they return to Belfast but the Giants' defence held on to keep the game at 2-2. Manchester return to N. Ireland in late October and need to perform well to get through to the next round.

This weekend also saw Manchester take on last years playoff winners; the Mobilx Vipers. This was a firey game that finished 6-2 in Manchester's favour, with goals from Robin Gomez, Simon Mangos, David Vychodil, Derek Campbell, KC Timmons & Johan Molin for Manchester and Jim Shephard & Jonathan Weaver for the Vipers. The game got out of hand in the final period after Vipers' Jeremy Cornish losing 2 fights to Robin Gomez and the Vipers players "lost composure" and the game was almost stopped. This victory puts Phoenix lying 7th with 5 points after 6 games.

Some bad news for Phoenix came when James Hutchinson told Coach Hand that he has decided to leave Manchester after having some concerns with his form.

Nick - you were asking me about Matthew Rich. Here's your answer:
eliteleaguenews.co.uk wrote:With the departure of James Hutchinson from the Manchester Phoenix roster, head coach Tony Hand has moved quickly to sign 19-year old right-winger Matthew Rich to take his place on his third line of forwards.

Glasgow-born Matt Rich always wanted to play hockey so much so that aged sixteen, and having learned the game through the Paisley junior programme, he applied to go to school in Canada firstly in the suburbs of Toronto and then to Regina, Saskatchewan where he graduated high school and played AAA level hockey for the Notre Dame Hounds.

Last season, he returned to his native Scotland after calling the Edinburgh Capitals to see if they had any openings and the Capitals rewarded him with a place on the roster that saw him play 49 games scoring 4 goals and 2 assists while taking just one minor penalty.

Phoenix player coach Tony Hand commented, "Matt was with me last season in Edinburgh and really impressed me with his work ethic and keenness to listen and learn. He’s a real grafter and I’m confident he will slot in really well with Adam (Walker) and Joe (Miller) – I guess with two Scots and a Welshman together, they’ll be nicknamed our celtic line."

Matthew Rich started this season with the MobilX Newcastle Vipers but was delighted to get the chance to join the Phoenix.

Excellent win for the Panthers on saturday night against Belfast 4 - 2, who in the past have been our bogey team. Ryan shmyr finally got to drop his gloves when he pummelled Belfast's Skiehar, it was a bit of a mismatch really. One of stand out players for me is Corey Neilson who has been a fantastic signing for us.

Phoenix won after a shootout last night against Basingstoke after drawing 1-1, Basingstoke's keeper basically singlehandedly earning them a point. The stadium is apparently ahead of schedule now and the actual building will start to go up on wednesday

Basingstoke Bison 3 Sheffield Steelers 4

After 4 straight losses Sheffield got back to winning ways, they started really well, but in the end had to hold on to collect the points.

Shaun Sutter (6) opened the scoring in the 8th minute for the visitors. A double from Shawn Maltby (5th and 6th) in the 12th and 16th minute put them 3 up.

Mark Thomas with his first goal in league play made it 4 unanswered in the 25th minute. Just over two minutes later the Bison pulled one back as Mark DeSantis (5) found the net. A quick fire double 16 seconds apart from Greg Chambers (3rd and 4th) then made it a 1-goal game in the 34th minute.

The 3rd period was goalless, but it wasn’t for the want of trying as there were an incredible 31 shots on goal, in fact there were 98 shots on goal in the whole game.

Period Scores: 0-3, 3-1, 0-1
Penalty Mins: 47-43
Shots On: Nick Boucher 45 - Jody Lehman 53

Newcastle Vipers 1 Belfast Giants 3

League leading Giants completed a 4-point road weekend with this narrow victory against bottom club Vipers, with a last minute empty net goal finally killing off the home side.

The opening period produced nothing in the way of goals but did see Giants outshoot Vipers by 10-5. The 2nd session looked to be heading the same way until Paul Ferone (1st league goal of the season) opened the scoring for the home side at 36.01 – but that was countered by Jason Ruff (9) netting shorthanded at 39.32.

Giants really dominated the 3rd period – outshooting their hosts by 13-3 but it was not until 50.44 when Mark Dutiaume (8) edged them ahead with a powerplay strike.

Vipers tried to hit back but Giants finally iced the win thanks to Curtis Huppe (8) hitting the empty net with 22 seconds remaining.

Period Scores: 0-0, 1-1, 0-2

Penalty Mins: 10-8

Shots On: Curtis Cruikshank 34 + 1 empty net goal

Challenge Cup Group C

Edinburgh Capitals 3 Hull Stingrays 4

All to play for in this encounter where the winners would book a place in the semi-finals and it was the league newcomers Hull who came out on top with Kevin Young hitting home the GWG on shorthanded play in the 59th minute.

The home side were quickly off the mark as Mark Garside netted his 1st senior goal and the only goal of the first period with 1.32 on the clock.

The visitors got on level terms 3 minutes into the second period with a goal from Nikolai Ladygin (PP). The home side then hit two goals in two minutes Matthew Craig (PP) 25th minute and Patrik Luza (PP) 27th minute to take the upper hand. Not to be out done by the home side the Stingrays themselves scored two in two minutes Jeff Glowa (PP) 34 minutes and Sergiy Rublivsky (PP) 36 minutes to tie the game up at 3 apiece.

All to play for in the 3rd period, the Capitals had a great chance to go in front when they were awarded a penalty shot in the 54th minute, but Bielik came up big and saved the shot from Dino Bauba. With the game heading for a draw, which would have meant both team would miss out and Newcastle would have booked the semi-final berth, up stepped Young to hit home the GWG and become the Stingray’s hero.

Period Scores: 1-0, 2-3, 0-1
Penalty Mins: 20-20
Shots On: Stephen Murphy 30 - Miroslav Bielik 38

Challenge Cup Group D

Coventry Blaze 5 Cardiff Devils 3

The Devils had an uphill struggle in this encounter having to win it by 4 clear goals. They failed in their quest and last years winners went out of the competition, as Coventry progressed to the semi-finals hoping to go one better than last years runners up spot.

The home side scored the only goal of the first period as Danny Stewart (PP) found the back of Osaer’s net.

They doubled their lead in the 23rd minute with a powerplay goal from Adam Calder. The Devils got off the mark within a minute as Paul Sample netted. They then tied the game up in the 25th minute with a goal by Tyson Teplitsky. They gave themselves some hope just over the midway point as Brad Voth put them in front. Six minutes later it was the turn of the home side to level things as Ashley Tait scored. With just over a minute to go in the period Barrie Moore edged the home side in front 4-3.

A Neal Martin powerplay goal in the 55th minute sealed the win and the home side's place in the last 4..

Period Scores: 1-0, 3-3, 1-0

Phoenix sign Czech forward

Friday, 10th November 2006
Ales Parez

Manchester Phoenix will go into this coming weekends' games against Edinburgh and Sheffield with new signing Ales Parez in the line-up.

Player/coach Tony Hand confirmed the signing of the Czech-born forward saying, "we've been looking for a permanent replacement for Ryan Watson and Matt Beveridge joined us on a week-to-week agreement. I'd like to thank Matt for his effort and helping us out, and we wish him all the best. We heard about Ales a few weeks ago and have been researching him since and he's joining the team in time for the weekend. He's got good size and comes to us from the University of Alaska where he's been the club captain for two years."

Hand added, "Ales attended pre-season training camp with American Hockey League clubs and had been expecting a deal to take him to the East Coast. When we contacted him, he was delighted, jumped at the chance and couldn't pack his bags quick enough to get over here. He'll bring some fresh energy to the team, his numbers in college hockey are good and his references from Alaska speak highly of him."

Originally from Nymburk in the Czech Republic, 25-year old Ales stands 6ft 3ins and tips the scales around the 195lb mark. A right-shot forward, he has been in North America for six years studying Management while playing college hockey where he has been a team leader in points scored every season.

Speaking ahead of boarding his flight to the UK he said, "When I heard Manchester were interested, I immediately checked the website to see how the team looks and saw that results have been pretty good for a team playing so much on the road. I'm looking forward to getting there, settling in and helping the team as much as I can."
Stats aren't looking too great, but he's still relatively young, only 25. Played well in his debut

Manchester snapped a 4 game losing streak with a comprehensive road win with new boy Ales Parez netting twice.

It was the home side who got off the mark first, with 2.43 on the clock Gregor Slak (5th) put the home side in front - this was the only time they were in the lead. At 4.03 Johan Molin (7th) with the leagues 400th goal tied the game up at one apiece with a shorthanded effort.

Before the break Phoenix lost Robin Gomez on a 5+game for roughing but Capitals could not take advantage.

In the second perriod the visitors hit three unanswered to take a 4-1 lead with goals from David Vychodil (3rd) at 26.06, Matthew Rich in his fourth start for the club scored his first goal at 37.25 then at 38.51 Ales Parez netted on his debut. The hosts pulled one back with only three seconds to go in the second period as Gregor Slak (6th) netted his second of the game.

Ales Parez (2nd) with a powerplay goal at 44.04 got his second of the night, David Vychodil (4th) 46.47 then with his second of the night followed by Scott Basiuk (2nd) on the powerplay at 50.08 and Johan Molin (8th) at 54.58 stretched Manchester's lead to 8-3. A good solid road win for Steelers against a Phoenix side that had scored freely the previous night.

It took only 38 seconds for Shawn Maltby (his 9th) to open the scoring and that turned out to be the only goal of a tight opening session.

Phill Hill (6th) made it 2-0 Steelers at 25.46 and at the second break the home side were still being blanked.

On a delayed penalty call Johan Molin (9th) finally got Phoenix on the board at 41.59 but 25 seconds later it was back to a 2-goal spread as Warren Tait (1st) beat Jason Wolfe in the home cage.

Maltby (10th) made it 4-1 at 51.19 but Phoenix battled on and reduced the leeway at 56.46 through an effort by KC Timmons.

Too little too late however and Steelers skated home with both points.

[quote]
Hull Stingrays 1 – 3 Manchester Phoenix.

Manchester Phoenix completed a terrific four-point weekend on Sunday night following up Saturday’s 4-3 win with a 3-1 away win over the Hull Stingrays.

Phoenix gave notice of their intentions right from the start of Sunday’s encounter at the Hull Ice Arena by opening their account with a short-handed strike from Derek Campbell on five minutes before doubling their lead a little over two minutes later when player coach Tony Hand played the inch-perfect pass for Johan Molin to notch his 12th goal of the season.

Stingrays reduced the arrears on an early second period powerplay with new signing Anton Butochnov the scorer, but despite enjoying a lot of possession, they could not find another way past Phoenix goalie Jason Wolfe. Phoenix had chances to extend their lead only for Derek Campbell to be denied as a terrific wrist shot hit the post. With time running out in the second period, Phoenix regained the two-goal advantage as a long pass from Jason Wolfe found Johan Molin out wide on the left and when his shot was spilled by the Stingrays goalie, Ales Parez was there to net the rebound.

Hull worked hard to put the Phoenix under pressure in the final period, but the Manchester defence stood firm, soaking up everything and counter-attacking effectively to keep the home defence from over-committing to the attack. With Radoslav Hecl harshly penalised in the final two minutes, Hull pulled their goalie in favour of the extra attacker, but to no avail and the 3-1 score line moved Phoenix into fifth place in the bmibaby Elite League standing, leapfrogging the Stingrays on the back on the four-point weekend.

Phoenix player/coach Tony Hand commented, “this was a huge weekend for us and we’re pleased to have taken four points from it. It moves us into the top half of the table and gives us a big boost ahead of Thursday’s tough trip to the league-leading Belfast Giants.â€
