So the Canucks shelled the Laffs 6-1 tonight, which I'm sure is going to have this town (Vancouver) rioting in the streets tonight. I didn't know the rivalry was so strong between these teams until this past week when all the Vancouver daily papers (24 Hours, Metro, etc) ran cover stories with headlines like "The Leafs don't just SUCK, THEY BLOW!!!" (actual 24 hours headline) This article was accompanied by a picture of a Leafs jersey in a garbage bin and went on to describe how they dragged it behind a car during one of Vancouvers famous rain storms, which pretty much ripped the Leafs jersey to shreds.
I've lived in Toronto as well, and I don't ever recall there being a strong anti-Vancouver sentiment. There was a strong "Toronto is the greatest city on Earth" sentiment, but I think every city has that to some extent.
anyway, I guess my point is I was a little shocked at the amount of hostility I saw going from West to East these last couple days. I'll now quote a poem called 'Ode to the Maple Leafs' that was printed in 24 Hours....
Oh Maple Leafs
I plead of thee
Give up the chase
Of the Stanley dream
Oh Maple Leafs
When will you see
Your team is nothing
Like it used to be
Darcy Tucker
Mats Sundin
One little ******
And a Swedish has been
Oh Maple Leafs
Your team rankles
I've seen better skating
From old ladies with cankles
When will you score
When will you win
Your goals are soft
Your stats so grim
Oh Maple Leafs
Turn on the heat
Basements get cold
Especially in the East
Yes, Raycroft sucks
Leafs blow
But not nealy as much
As the city of Toronto
-By Graeme McRanor
To me, it sounds like it was written by a 14 year-old and they really shouldn't have printed it. Comments?
Cheers all.

Is there really any need to comment this?
Rivalries are good as they put a certain excitement in the games between two rivals, so there's a lot of tension and a lot of action, everyone playing his best hockey, and so there's a great game (at least, it SHOULD be a great game...not always the case...)
But that kinda stuff is as useless as the guy who wrote it
But well, there's always stupid people in the arena's... no more and no less than anywhere else.

Yeah, seems like a really bad move on 24 Hour's part to print that ridiculous 'poem'. I'll keep my eye out in the local media tomorrow for some Toronto backlash.archibalduk wrote:That is going too far, IMHO. All that's going to do is provoke people and create greater hostility.
We have that sort of thing in the way of football (soccer) chants at football matches. However, no-one would ever be so foolish as to actually publish them.

Cheers. and for the record, I think both T.O. and VanCity are awesome locales in their own special ways!
