Speaking of the Islanders... they signed Vasicek to a one year deal.

What about the Peca/Rangers situation? Tsn believe he is seeking $1.25M but that he will actually eventually land under $1M + performance bonuses. Kinda like Shanny did this summer, only he got a lot more dead presidents
I think this is a typical Slats anno 2002-2003 move, however I believe that this one is much more considered than the Holik-fiasco (talk about nothing for everything). I hope Peca can still contribute (I mean he will not play first or second line minutes this season if everyone above him stays healthy) as he did for the Oilers in their 2006 playoff campaign.
I mean, the Rangers gets a player in Peca that has two Selke trophys, two appearences in the Cup finals and an all-around talent and leader on and off the ice. I really think that if Peca signs for the Rangers he will play a vital role in their quest for the Cup...

I've been hearing talk about Peca signing with the Rangers for a while now. I think it could be a decent move if done for the right money. I say that as someone that HATED Peca back in his Buffalo days (he just has this look about him that made me want to smack him). If they keep the salary cap number down and keep him on the 3rd line, it could work.

Well from Vancouver..we love Peca because of one play. Poor Teemu that must have hurt.
Anyway...Rangers getting Peca for $1 mill is not a bad deal for 3rd-4th line duty and PK. However, I am sure they have younger guys who could do it for less. Oh wait..we are talking about the Rangers...not Devils.

Yeah, yeah... They brought up Ortmeyer and Hollweg for those kind of situations, traded for a young Blair Betts at the '04 deadline who now centres the fourth line. But I get your point, the Rangers have drafted awfully bad the last decade, however since the lock-out things are looking up with Staal, Sanguinetti, Cherepanov, Animisov, Sauer and so on. Things are getting better...batdad wrote:Well from Vancouver..we love Peca because of one play. Poor Teemu that must have hurt.

On another note, this was my 100th post on TBL

But that wasnt your fault that you drafted well, it was the other teams stupidity before your picks, Marc Staal was a faller, Cherepanov hugely, and they were just waiting to be picked, there was a lot of luck in your recent picks, at the start of each draft i don't think these players were at the top of the list, who would've thought Cherepanov would fall to 17!!! and Staal to 12!!! was bad enough. Who knows the, if they were able to flop so far in the drafts, maybe they will do in the NHL, time will tell

Hmm, very objective... But really, which draft isn't about luck? The Pens got Esposito this year... Wasn't he projected to go earlier than he did? In '93, the Isles drafted Bertuzzi at 23, I think we all know who was the no 1 pick that year. During the Smith, Muckler era - the Rangers drafted poorly. Sather wasn't much better at first but there was a reason for that, he traded lots of draft picks during that period. Point, drafting well is very much about having a talented scouting staff and so on, but if your'e gonna make a big steal in the draft, you need luck...
No, he will use them as trade bait to bolster the roster come trade deadline... Sarcasm is nice, btw...Bah, don't worry... Sather will certainly trade Staal and Cherepanov for big pics, now that they are certain they can draft well

You can find late round gems for any team in the NHL. YOu can find early round flops for any team in the NHL.
Roman Oksuta real bad.
Matt Cooke, Kevin Bieksa...not so bad.
Zetterberg great, but what about Jesse Wallin 30th overall in 1996 ahead of Cory Sarich (Buf), Zdeno Chara(NYI), and Tom Poti(Edm) just to name a few. Sarich in round 2, Chara and Poti round 3.
All teams do well sometimes and bad sometimes. IN many ways because the kids being drafted are so young in comparison to other sports...it is a crapshoot. Noone really knows who will continue to develop and who is done developing.
One of the big things in scouting is that "big guys develop later". Well...sometimes they do, and sometimes they never develop. Other times small guys who look like rubbish early on (St Louis) develop late.
Scouting and predicting a player's ability in 5 years when they are 18...is the most difficult job in hockey.
All scouts can be said to suck at any pt in time. Other times..they are heroes.

The Red Wings had a lot of first round busts in the mid-90's.batdad wrote:Zetterberg great, but what about Jesse Wallin 30th overall in 1996 ahead of Cory Sarich (Buf), Zdeno Chara(NYI), and Tom Poti(Edm) just to name a few. Sarich in round 2, Chara and Poti round 3.
1994 - Yan Golubovsky (50 games)
1995 - Maxim Kuznetsov (117 games)

Don't even get me started on the Bruins' drafting! They've been terrible up until recently.
By the way, there's talk (yeah Eklund has been saying it but I guess other sources have been talking about it too) that the Bruins are going after Danny Markov. I guess right now they're just looking to get rid of some guys to free up the money to sign him. I'm hearing Axelsson (it would be a shame to see him go but he is getting older) and Ward to Carolina for prospects and picks.

I guess that Lou felt obligated (had to) sign Martin as soon as possible to prevent a future hold-out. However, from what I have heard, Martin wasn't interested in playing anywhere else... Martin is a decent player who probobly deserves a contract like this - in three years... Not now, but with all the GMs throwing money around them, Martin had a pretty good starting point for his negotiations with Mr. Lamoriello.
Also, it seems like every team in the Western Conference (plus the Senators) want to sign Peter the Great, or at least expresses their desire to sign him... I really don't think Forsberg will land anywhere else but Denver. The Avs haven't really said anything interesting regarding Forsberg but I think that's where he will end up in November-January (if they are in the playoff race). He will not go to Detroit! He played with the Avs in the '90s for crying out loud!

Foppa has said no to any team in the Northwest Division other than the Av's. I would not be shocked to see him back in Philly or in Colorado. Anywhere else would be a surprise. The ever present "Foppa to Vancouver" because of Nazzy rumour is out there of course. yeah right.
As for Paul Martin...well...Vancouver signed Bieksa to 3.75 and yes he is really good, but has had 1 year. Martin...pretty close although different type of player.
