Nice deal for P.K!
Selanne will get his number frozen for Ducks in January when they play against the Jets.
Perfect game for them to put his number in the roof!

Hey that's pretty darn cool IMO. Nice pick of teams!jhcjobpb wrote:Selanne will get his number frozen for Ducks in January when they play against the Jets.

And well, PK deal is alright IMO. For now it's too high but I guess in 3-4 years when the cap will be higher he will look like a nice "discount". Still, people here are thinking that Bergevin did not well in the negociations and a ton of people already wants his head for getting PK into arbitration......seriously MTL fans....

I think that he probably did well not accepting who knows what kind of stupid deal a la Slather. He might have tried 'till the end to get 1 or 1.5 millions away from Subban just for the sake of having a certain space with the cap.

you have to overpay to keep a player these days. In the end you're better off overpaying PK than you are Phaneuf. 7 million vs 9 million. Both players are argueably 2 million overpaid so in the end MTL has it better.philou21 wrote:Hey that's pretty darn cool IMO. that is the problem with these "Bridge contracts" ... Sure, they save you a few million over 1 or 2 years, but if the player pans out, then you are going to have to waaay overpay to keep him. MTL would have been better to deal long term 2 years ago and locked him in far below what he has now. With a bridge contract you only come out on top as a GM if they player doesnt grow .. so in essence, you are betting against your player.

Phaneuf and "make sense" in the same sentence doesn't make sense!philou21 wrote:Yeah....I guess vs Phaneuf it makes alot of sense.dave1927p wrote:you have to overpay to keep a player these days. I haven't said Phaneuf himself was making sense. Just that the comparison of Subban contract was making sense compared to Phaneuf one who's not making sense, thus that makes sense.

Saku Koivu retired today!
Awesome player. I'm sad he retired this "early" as he could have given a lot to many teams still.

So the NHL banned today the "spin-o-rama". Even though I always thought it was funny seeing a player do that in shootout, it's a good decision since it lets absolutely no chance for the goalie to stop it most of the time.

Tim Bozon is certainly one of a kind. After fighting meningitis 5 months ago, which made him lost 40 pounds (!), he's back in Montreal with almost all his weight back and even more in shape then before. Nice example of determination for a bunch of people.

Its a minor miracle that that he recovered without brain damage. The fact that he is playing hockey again is truly incredible.
Also, why oh why do the Habs think that inviting Boullion to their training camp is a good idea?

Well I think that it's a good vet to have around for the young d-crew of the Habs. I really don't care if they sign him or not. If they sign him it's going to be more of an "honoraric status". (If that's the correct way to say it)

Re: Official NHL Off-Season 2014 Thread
Well the Habs will not have a captain this year. Markov, Pleckanec, Subban and Pacioretty will be the assistants for the season. I think it's a good idea. Instead of messing up and naming someone who could maybe not do the job, they put 2 vets with 2 young guys to do it. This year will be a test for some players I guess.

Things are not going well between the Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen. After struggling with negociations, Kekalainen offered him THREE different contracts. 6 millions for 2 years, 32 millions for 6 years and 46 millions for 8 years. Johansen replied to that by going home in Vancouver. Wow. Even though I think he had an awesome season and that he developed well, his head might have developed a little too big.

Disagree. Columbus is a joke, and Johansen knows he holds all the cards here. They can shut up and pay up because they are Columbus, or they can see this get even worse.philou21 wrote:Things are not going well between the Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen. Now is he ACTUALLLY worth that? Heck no. There's no indication yet that last year was not an anomaly for him. But this is what you get when you're a sad-sack, sorry, joke of an organization and then try to play hardball. You lose, because you have no leverage. Shut up and pay them man and hope he raises your franchise to some sort of level of respectability before they become the Seattle Blue Jackets or the Kansas City Blue Jackets.
And oh BTW... players are watching this. Players that will be UFA's eventually. And Columbus will again cry "Why won't UFA's sign here?!"
No, the front office botched this big-time by going public. Davidson stating Brandon Dubinsky can be your #1 Center, or that Boone Jenenr is a top 2 center? Going all-in for McDavid then eh?

Re: Official NHL Off-Season 2014 Thread
I never said I was siding behind the Jackets though. You're totally right when you say that Johansen knows that he holds the cards there but still, he looks as stupid as Columbus IMO. It's not with one decent season (Only 63 pts), been the Jackets or not, that you earn 6 millions. The guy is giving up on all his teammates right now doing that, what respect from the fans and the players do he gets from that? None. That's the proof he's full of it I think. In a market like LA, MTL or NY he would get like 4.5 or 5 max and so far as young as he is even in Columbus, he does not worth much.
He needs a transition contract like Subban had two years ago. No players acting like this worth paying that much to get your franchise "a level of respectability". It's not with over-paying players that you get somewhere in the NHL.

Re: Official NHL Off-Season 2014 Thread
Who *is* Columbus ever going to pay though, then, if not a JOhansen? They paid Wisniewski 5.5 per to be... what exactly? He's not even 1st pairing anymore last I checked. Johansen is looking at that roster, looking at Horton making 5.3, Brandon freaking Dubinksy making 4.2 per... and he's thinking "Who of those guys scored 30 goals last year? PAY ME!". That's the problem. CBS has paid guys nicely in HOPES they'd do something for the team (and they haven't). Johansen does kinda' deliver, even for one lone year, and now he wants paid for it... and CBS is balking. You *really* can't pay the guys CBS has, and then tell Johansen that "You scored 33 goals and led us in scoring, buuuuuuuut... you're not worth that much".philou21 wrote:I never said I was siding behind the Jackets though. In LA or NY or something, he'd likely take that 4.5 or 5 per and be fine. CBS is not NY or LA though. CBS is CBS. When you're garbage as long as they have been, and when your market is garbage and fans won't support the team... your cost is going to be more.

He could still sign that 2 years 6 millions deal for now and then asking for more. I still don't see his point of going home anyway, pretty immature if you ask me, whatever the situation is.

Antony Mantha will be injured for 6-8 weeks with a broken tibia. It really sucks for him. I was hoping to see him play in the pre-season to know how's he's doing.
Also Teemu Selanne critized Bruce Boudreau in his new biography saying that "It would've been a shame to won the Cup with that kind of coach" and also that if it wasn't from him, he would've played another season. The Ducks did well this year with him though....maybe old grudges?
