Oh yeah, the chaos of the first offseason of an EHM game.
Tampa:
Draft:
I had a hard time balancing what the game is telling me and what I know about players. Made a few deals to get guys that I think will work out, and really sped up the turnaround timeline.
1st Round (3)= #1 ranked going into the draft,
Daniel Sedin (LW, SWE, Modo) - I didn't expect this Sedin to drop down! Compares to Naslund or a more talented Brunette. Injury prone, but that's a risk I'm willing to take for his talent for sure. He will likely start the season in Tampa, outside chance he goes to the AHL if he isn't ready, but I doubt it.
3rd Round (63)- #34 ranked
Pavel Brendl (RW, CZE, Calgary (WHL)) - Lots of different comparisons from Brett Hull to Selivanov. I'm not sold that I didn't screw this one up, but my scouts comparisons and "Tons of potential" comments sold me. A lot of development for him to do (not even AHL ready), so hopefully this one turns out long turn.
3rd Round (65)- Unranked
Toni Lydman (LD/RD, FIN, HIFK, 21 years old) - overage, but again my scouts couldn't stop drooling, so i traded Michal Sykora for the pick (SYkora wasn't bad, but was in a logjam and I like Lydman more). Compares to 37-year old Chelios (I'd prefer 27 year old Chelios...). My scouts think he's ready for the NHL now, and I think he'll make the team for sure.
5th Round (123)- Unranked
Mark Streit (RD/LD, SUI, Davos, 21 years old) - overage, and another that I wanted and was crossing my fingers I could skip a few picks and he'll still be there. Compares to Rafalski and Van Impe, so not as high by the scouts. Very offensive so he should be a great point man for us. Not quite NHL ready, so hopefully he'll agree to a favorable AHL contract (Two-way and 'hot prospect') until he's ready.
6th Round (157)- Unranked
Samuel Pahlsson (C, SWE, Modo, 21 years old) - overage. Traded up to get him (cost me my 6th and 7th). Hopefully will fit the defensive center role well (and with the current roster, has a chance to make it now in that role...). Like Streit I'm hoping to be able to get him in the AHL to start.
Trades
McCarthy and Wilkinson to PIT for Aubin- hopfeully Aubin is a long term goalie solution. This was simply my heart trying to make up for Hedberg chasing him out of town.
Ciccone and Elich to NSH for Brunette- need shooters on the wing for my preferred system, and he's not too bad at that.
Selivanov to SJ for a 3rd, Petrovicky to CLB for a 4th, Ysbaert to MTL for a 4th, Cullimore to MIN for a 4th, Hewer to WPG for a 4th, Delisle to COL for a 4th. All guys who would need to clear waivers, or don't have potential for picks. We'll see if I can turn my 4th round mass into something, or just pick 15% of the 4th round.
Hulak and Wilkie to WPG for Bret DeCecco. At the trade time, I had three scout reports, one "depth", two "key". By the end of the summer he was a depth guy like Richer (ouch). May have screwed that one up.
Corey Schwab and a 2nd rounder to BUF for Michael Peca.

This was reacting quick to a news item that he was being mentioned in deals. If Peca is done growing, he's already Selke material, and had 60 points last year. If he grows... OH BOY. No idea why BUF wanted him out. They reacted strange and RELEASED Hasek in Auguest, they have Roloson, signed Tim Thomas, traded for Schwab... there's only one net!
Around the league
Since the historic factor is fun to me:
Forsberg, Hasek (just released) and Bure still free agents on August 8th. I think they priced themselves out of the budgets, as there hasn't even been news of offers or interested teas listed.
Biggest signings of note: Kolzig to EDM, Potvin to WSH, Linden to DET, Nieuwendyk to NJ, K. Hatcher to CAR, Mathieu Schneider to ANA, Berard to VAN,
I'm ready for the NHL 2000 patches everywhere, and will have some tough training camp calls. Per my team report, my lineup would be:
Potvin- Aubin
Cross- Lydman
Kubin- Dykhuis
Bannister-Mara
Streit-Skopinstev
Tucker-Peca-Renberg
Zamuner-Vinny-Richer
Brunette-Langkow-Anderson
Clark-Pahlsson-DeCecco
Borderline: Nazarov, Sedin, Cullen, Richards.
