Re: 1998/99: CJ Rosters (Discussion & Add-ons)

Post by nino33 »

Greetings!

I've been helping CJ with the 1998 database lately. I've had the database for a few weeks, and thought I'd post a progress report.
While I have the database CJ has been using an "attribute_update" spreadsheet from the EHM Updater to work on the Finnish SM-League (as well as gathering info about future drafts and other European Leagues).

It seems currently the 1998 database is suffering from the same “bug” that the TBL Rosters 6.0 is (as Archi described it in his post when the 2013-14 Rosters were recently released - “something which may now cause the Editor to crash when trying to save changes to the database and/or when exiting the Editor after saving”)...Archi is working on determining a cause/ fix and hopefully all will be fixed soon enough

I've gotten a bunch done so far...I've created the minor hockey/young kids leagues for North America & also for Sweden, Finland, Russia and the Czech Republic; I've got a couple teams in each NA League (haven't done European/Russian teams yet).

I've finished going through every player on every team in Major Junior (WHL. OHL and QMJHL), and as required I corrected age, moved players to an age appropriate team or made Invalid (to be deleted) if they were a "modern" player who was never drafted and/or never played in the NHL. I've begun the "staff_new" list of players that need to be added (also correcting age/moving players, as the database contains those 1998 players who were still playing hockey in 2006); I've only just started (in WHL, then need to do OHL/QMJHL)

I've begun the process of reviewing/comparing Staff in EHM and IRL 1998 Staff and making a list of who to keep, who to move, who to overwrite/delete

I've gone through all the players "Playing For" an NHL team and "corrected" the Draft Years (added missing draft data for dozens). This is needed so we'll be able to have a 2006 start version & a 1998 start version (still need to go through the Major Junior and AHL players)

It was earlier today when I was working on "fixing" Player Awards History and Player Stats that the "bug" really became a problem. Once Archi fixes the problem it shouldn't take me long to be able to export the Awards/Stats and "fix things" in regards to Awards/Stats (correct years so we'll be able to have both 2006/1998 start versions + I'll remove IRL 1998-2006 Awards/Stats)...and eventually I'd like to take a look at League/Team Records and Retired Numbers too

My plan is to get done what I can before I head back to work on January 6th. At that time I'll be sending the database back to CJ. I have hernia surgery at the end of January, and once recovered I'll be looking to do some more work on the 1998 database. I'm hoping that in 4-6 months the 1998 database might be even more immersive/fun to play!

Merry Christmas! :-)

Me & nino are taking a break from this project now, as we both are working on the newest TBL Rosters. :-)

I'm going to be looking into this bug within the next two weeks.

IIRC Nino sent a copy of the DB to me a while back. So I'll take a look at that along with the TBL Rosters v6.0 which also suffered from the bug. It is interesting we have both run into the bug at the same time, but there never previously was a problem (I have updated the player awards history for the TBL Rosters for a few years now without any issues).

Hello CJ and the crew.

Are you currently working on this database, and are you going to launch CSD patched version of this? I'd like to start this from the year 98-99 but the contracts are so god darn long.

No. Both CJ and I have been focused on helping out with the TBL Rosters recently. I currently have the database, but it's been weeks since I worked on it, and (because I'm currently working on the TBL Rosters) it'll be weeks before I get back to it

That's what I want to do! My earlier post (from Christmas Day) is still correct in regards to what I'm working on/planning on working on...from my side/based on what I'm working on I think it'll likely be summertime before a next version

You can make your own CSD Patched version by using the EHM Updater. Load the database in the Updater -> click on the Database tab. In the bottom left corner on the Database tab/screen you'll see the Date Adjustment section -> enter -8 in the Year Adjustment box and click on the Adjust Years button. Then save the DB. The DB is then ready for a 1998 start date using the CSD Patch.

But I've not looked at the Extra Config File much, and I've never done anything with "DRAFT_PICK_SWITCH" entries before...what are they?

The first entry..."DRAFT_PICK_SWITCH" "Los Angeles Kings" "Buffalo Sabres" 2 1999 - does this mean LA and Buffalo swap their 2nd round picks in 1999?

And what was your source for these?

Thanks!

Yes the draft pick switches places. :-) I haven't touched the draft picks in the config file. Those draft picks are Lazion's doings.

When you copy that into the extra_config, test it and make sure it works.
I copied draft pick changes from somewhere once and they were in a slightly different font or something(but you could not see that in the file) and did not turn up in game.

And Nino, it means from LA to Buffalo not a swap of picks

That's what I thought...but unless I'm misunderstanding, it seems the list below is only a small fraction of the changes needed...wiki shows traded picks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_NHL_Entry_Draft and for the 2nd round in 1999 it shows 16 picks traded (plus 10 "compensatory picks" added in too), while ezpkns34's list shows only two 1999 2nd round picks traded...maybe 14 of the 16 trades occurred after the start of the 1998 season and that's why ezpkns34 didn't include them?

Thanks Manimal!

I do hope ezpkns34 explains his source/method for what he prepared...the reality is (when I get back to it) there's a lot of basic roster editing work that needs to be done before I'll be worrying about future draft picks (so I can't see spending the time to look everything up anytime soon)

Well, most of the traded 1999 draft picks were traded after the 1998 season had begun. The only ones I added were the ones that occurred prior to the start of the season or that coincided with traded players and those players were already traded in this file (ie Montreal traded Joe Smith & a 2nd to Toronto for Mark Johnson, if Mark Johnson was on Montreal in this file then I included the draft pick trade, if Mark Johnson was still on Toronto in the file then I did not swap the draft pick). Plus some of the draft pick trades that were listed there already were simply incorrect (like the TB picks to PHI)

Only took a few minutes to look at the draft pick trade dates & then see if it needed to be added to the file (hint: using http://www.prosportstransactions.com/ho ... s/1999.htm instead of wiki helps speed up the process exponentially)

No prob. Just didn't want to add future picks that hadn't actually happened yet in the game. Same reason I went through & edited out the Liked Clubs & Liked Players for young prospects like Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc. Yeh, they got drafted to PIT or WSH in real life, but I don't see how that has much of an impact on them in a universe where they've yet to hit puberty

Also, tried to edit the Clubs via the pre-game editor since every one had a 1 for Market Size, but it wouldn't let me edit a few of the teams (Detroit, Vancouver & Toronto). When I clicked on those teams, I get a popup saying Access Violation. Anyone else have that happen or is it just me?

Nevermind, figured out that instead of clicking on those 3 teams, I had click on a team above or below them & hit the arrow key to move to them. Still gives me the pop up but now lets me edit them after x-ing out of the pop up notice

Yes I have (mentioned in posts at the top of this page).

I think Archi may have fixed things via the Updater, but I'm not sure what I have to do to "fix" the current database (open it/save it using the latest version of the Updater?)...as I recall I too was able to carry on editing (I don't think I've done any work on the 1998 DB since January)

I'm referring to the pre-game editor, not the Updater (don't think archi works on both)

I understand (as I too noticed the issue while using the PreGame Editor). What I meant was the "bug" noticeable when using the PreGame Editor was hopefully fixable via the Updater (as the problem is within the database itself, not the tool used to view/edit it).

Assuming it is the same bug as before (and I think it will be), it is because club competition history entries have been added or removed to/from the DB. The editing was done via the Updater and hence why I'd been hoping to create a fix in the Updater to resolve the issue.

I still haven't been able to resolve the bug. The Editor seems to be very particular about what is in the competition history. I've no idea why it was fine with the first few years' worth of editing and now it no longer is. As a test, I took an issue-free version of the DB (i.e. one with club comp history which doesn't cause the Editor to give the error) and removed all but the first entry. All was fine with the Editor. I tried taking the original DB again and removed all but the first two entries and the Editor gave an error. What I can't understand is why the Editor is happy with the full set of data but kicks out the error when all but two entries are removed.

All I can really do at this stage is either:

a) Remove all but one history entry; or
b) Restore the history entries as per the original 2006 DB.

I think option (a) would be the best for the 1998 DB seeing as otherwise you're going to have post 1998 entries in the DB which is going to be very confusing. If CJ can send the DB to me then I'll happily fix it for him.

Hopefully some day I'll get to the bottom of this issue. At which point it will be very easy to re-import the history data.
