Directx error: Unable to initialise the sound

Im trying to launch the game on my laptop, when I get the message: Unable to initialise the sound - please ensure that DirectX is installed properly. And yes, it is.

I looked through these boards, the SI boards and the Steam community forums and it seemed to be a fairly common problem, tried various suggestions without any luck but what worked for me was Riz's suggestion of "deleting the "game.cfg" from your temp folder to clear the preferences (default location is: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\EHM\)".

I randomly found a hotfix for the direct x "unable to initialise the sound" issue. Clicking "disable display scaling on high DPI scaling" enabled me to finally open the game.
It's in c://program files (x86) > steam > steamapps > common > ehm> right click the blue exe. icon > compatibility tab.

All i had to do was change my monitor resolution to 1024x768 then ran the game from steam and it worked. However it was a smaller windowed display because of the lower resolution but it worked. FYI i tried all of the other solutions and this is the only one that worked for my system. Just thought i'd pass this along.

I have the same issue, but for different reasons. I played normally, but I really hated the face-off sound (well, sound in general...) and since I wanted to solve the issue quickly, I muted the game in windows volume mixer. After closing the game, I cant get it running again; it always comes back with the same quote - unable to initiate sound.
I have tried everything that is recommended here to no avail. I suspect the problem is it is still muted in the windows volume mixer, but I cant un-mute it unless the game is running.
Does anyone know a way how to unmute (change preferences in windows volume mixer) a program that isnt running? Otherwise I coudlnt play the game anymore!

I just downloaded this game and when I tried to run it, I received an unable to initialise sound pop-up informing me to make sure DirectX was installed properly. I tried downloading and installing DirectX, but I'm still not having any luck. If anyone can help me out here, what is DirectX and how do I get this game running properly? This is the only game I've ever downloaded from steam and had a problem getting it to play.
