Dallas Eakins hated to take the wind out of the bagpipes.
But the Toronto Marlies coach reminded his players that this week's trip to Scotland isn't about visiting castles, trying some haggis or bringing back duty free malt whiskey for relatives.
"We're still in training camp," Eakins warned yesterday as 24 Marlies prepared to fly to Edinburgh tonight. "It's a place that we might never go again in our lives, a chance afforded us by our management and the government of Scotland. But as much as we want to enjoy ourselves, this is an all-business trip."
The Leafs and AHL rival Hamilton Bulldogs were invited to play the Edinburgh Capitals and the Belfast Giants at the Edinburgh Hockey Festival, one of the events the host country is staging for the 250th birthday of poet Robbie Burns.
"It's certainly going to be a unique life experience," Marlies general manager Jeff Jackson said of the six-day visit. "We'll be doing some public practices, too. We play the Bulldogs once and probably be meeting them in the final."
It was expected forwards Andre Deveaux, Ben Ondrus, Alex Foster and Ryan Hamilton will clear NHL waivers by noon today and make the trip. Foster actually has some Scottish blood.
"I'm kind of a mutt; French Canadian-Scottish on my Dad's side and Italian-Ukrainian on my mother's," Foster said. "But I've never been to Europe, so I'm pretty excited."
The roster for the visit includes goalie James Reimer, Andrew Engelage and Beau Erickson; defencemen Brennan Evans, Josh Engel, Todd Perry, Phil Oreskovic, Joel Ryan, Eric Werner, Tom Galvin and Juraj Mikus; forwards Foster, Ondrus, Deveaux, Hamilton, Darryl Boyce, Mikhail Stefanovich, Dale Mitchell, Stefano Giliati, Kyle Rogers, Robert Slaney, Richard Greenop, Alex Berry, Greg Scott and John Kurtz, if he's cleared from a concussion.
"We go off whatever Ron Wilson wants us to the first week of Leaf camp, but now it's nice to get our own guys going," Eakins said.
