While we are sad to see M. Richards go, Staal is a star and we are getting great blueline depth. With this draft being so deep it makes that 2nd round pick a good value for Carolina. Re: Panthers on the Prowl
Aug 5th: A new segment of 5 questions was released by a Florida TV station today:
Season three did not go as well as planned. What was the biggest disappointment?
"Missing the playoffs was the biggest hit to me. I feel that we had the right team to do it but we battled with consistency. Hopefully a season with less moves will allow a better chemistry to form."
Speaking of moves, a lot were made last season. Why were there so many moves and do you feel we finally have the team you want?
"Other than the moves during the draft and the Garrison trade all trades I made last season were negotiations on deals offered to us. For every move I made there were at least offers for three other players. This season will be more axed on stability. We're hoping to make a lot less moves. There might be a couple of moves as our prospects fight for bigger roles."
There was a coaching change last season. Was it a hard decision? Was Greg Poss your first choice?
"It was very hard because I think Constantine had made a lot of great work. It was just felt that a shakeup was needed. Many candidates were looked into. We had made offers to three candidates and went with Poss. To support him we also added former players John LeClair and Paul Coffey as assistant coaches."
After a couple of years of having very few valuable prospects in the pipeline, the Panthers prospects are the talk of the town. What are your thoughts on that coming into this new season?
"We're extremely pleased. Last season Huberdeau broke QMJHL records for goals (101) and points (209). Forsberg was also stellar and is currently ranked 3rd all time in the WHL for assists in a single season (124). Marcoux set the single season shutout record (11) and career shutout record (27) in the QMJHL. Not to mention that Hall, Roy, Paajarvi, and Nugent-Hopkins are all still very young. It's a great time for us."
Where to you expect to be next April?
"I think we are a very capable playoff team. I don't see us waiting until late March or early April to qualify for the playoffs. We'll be top five in the east."
Aug 29th: Florida signed Chris Kreider to an entry level contract.
Aug 30th: Florida signed Nick Bjugstad to an entry level contract.
