The Jackets are on fire! I think this is by far their best sequence in their history.

Ottawa Senators acquired Andrew Hammond, a 25 year goalie who has spent the last few seasons in Bowling Green State University, on free agent.
I guess he will be a career AHLer in Binghampton.

Martin Brodeur scored his 3rd NHL goal against Carolina on a really weird play.

Kadri with his 2nd 3 point game in a row. He has 8 points in his last three games...unfortunately the Leafs have forgotten how to defend and only won one of those 3 games in regulation and lost the other two in the shootout.

When I saw it I didn't realize someone has to get the goal from the Jersey team. And as it was Brodeur who last touched the puck of them it was his goal.philou21 wrote:Martin Brodeur scored his 3rd NHL goal against Carolina on a really weird play.

I'll never be accused of being pro-Canucks but that Edler suspension is ridiculous. Stupid goalie stay in your effing crease and stop holding up the play. God Smith is almost as annoying as Ryan Miller.

One thing we know for sure is that the NHL can never be accused of being consistent... and don't even get me started on the Edler suspension, the Lupul suspension, the Nash non suspension or the lucic susp.... like I said consistently horrible to go along with the officiating. Sometimes I am so close to being done with the NHL. Thanks Gary!

The Devils lost Kovalchuk for 2 to 4 weeks. That's not gonna help them in their race for a playoffs spot.

Re: Official 2013 NHL Regular Season Thread
Edler dropped his shoulder. Actually I am okay with 2 games. In my day you hit a goalie like that....way more happens to you than a 2 game suspension. Edler should count himself lucky he can still walk. That being said...Smith...is an idiot. Total wimp and dumb arse.
But the others should have all been suspended for 20 games. Total dirty hits all over the place. Nash, Looch, all of em...25 games.

Re: Official 2013 NHL Regular Season Thread
See, thats the thing Batdad. There's a total lack of consistency. I'm fine with 2 or even maybe 5 games for Edler if Nash gets at least 5, Lucic gets 10 etc..... but there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to the madness that is Gary Buttmans NHL. In the old days someone would have had a nice quiet chat behind the net with Edler and after they both served 5 minutes or more it would all be over..... Sorta like the Bertuzzi thing in a way. Guy tries to take off the head of your best player...... won't drop the gloves, in fact kinda eggs the players on probably trying to draw a penalty.... well, we know where that one ended up and I am not defending Bertuzzi cause he was plain a dumbass for not waiting for a time and a place when he could have legally flattened Mr. Moore. These chickens**T players that skate around these days being all brave and trying to hurt players(Hello Mr. Brown in LA) and then running and hiding.... just turning the game into WWE if it isn't already there.

Re: Official 2013 NHL Regular Season Thread
No rhyme or reason? This season? as opposed to others? Never has been, never will be. The situations are too subjective...too much room for being inconsistent, and always will be. I honestly do not believe it is EVER going to be possible in hockey to suspend, fine, punish equal and fairly. And quite honestly...I do not think anyone in the game of hockey at the professional level is thinking it will ever be possible to be completely conisistent, UNLESS BODY CHECKING is taken entirely out of the game. And even then...the subjectiveness of unintended contact vs intended will be impossible to judge.
And those chicken Chelios were there back in the day CeeBee...we just did not see millions of hilites of them, and the internet was not around to rip em to shreds. Esa Tikkanen, Ken Linseman, Stan Jonathon (yeah Boston fans Stan was a bad dude if he were to play now but at least he would fight to back himself up), Ric Chartraw, and even as recently as Scott Stevens...are all examples of guys who would now be considered cheap shot artists, and constantly under scrutiny.
It is totally impossible for the league to be consistent. Each situation is different, each outcome is different. Each clamour for punishment is different from the fans and fan bases. There are too many variables out there to allow them to be consistent. They never have been, so why would they start now. It is impossible.
The dumbass hits were there long before the instigator. How do you think Bobby Orr had his knee wrecked? Stan Mikita was an idiot with the stick and hitting early in his career. Ed Van Impe. Watson brothers. Garry Doak. All cheap shotters who hit low, and hacked whacked and had sticks up in people faces, and were not called for it more than half the time. And back then the game was basically in slow motion and you could see it all.
This golden era, instigator stuff.....it does not hold up when you really watch what went on in the old days. Cheap shot...fight.....but did that stop the cheap shot guys? No ...not at all. They kept going. Just not caught. And no video evidence.
God Gordie Howe...a hockey hero...would be suspended today for every 2nd hit. There is no consistency...and never will be.

Re: Official 2013 NHL Regular Season Thread
Unfortunately batdad is right. It's easy for us to judge in our couch with 10 replay with 10 different angles. The referee on the ice don't have that and they need to make a quick decisions. As for the NHL, well, they have that time but it's hard to judge at some point.
PITT acquired Douglas Murray from SJ for two second rounder pick. A little bit too much IMO but with the addition of Morrow the Pens are one hell of a good team now. They clearly want the Cup.

Re: Official 2013 NHL Regular Season Thread
Yeah I can agree with most of that. Things to keep in mind though, as you said the game wasn't as fast back then as it is now, which reduced a lot of the impact on most of the cheap shots (except stick swinging and the like, yeah). And pads weren't made out of concrete.batdad wrote:No rhyme or reason? This season? as opposed to others? Never has been, never will be. I can see his point though, Nash's hit was one of the worst this season, yet he doesn't even get a hearing. Leaves his feet to lunge at a guy's head from the blindside who just shot the puck. Cooke/Savard written all over it. If that's Colton Orr on Crosby he's suspended for the rest of the season.
As for Smith/Miller & Looch, again, stay in your effing crease. I don't think goalies should be fair game when trying to make a save even outside of their crease, but if they wander out and hold up play yeah, no problem with a bit of a nudge. Both Edler and Looch could've destroyed the goalies if they wanted. They didn't. In NHL terms those were harmless hits. I don't wanna hear any BS about this starting an open season on goalies (it won't, just like it didn't last season with Looch/CrybabyHippie), and goalies are well padded, if someone claims "but but but they're not prepared to take a hit" I'll say what planet are they living on ? Do they realize which sport they're playing ? So they're prepared to play pucks well outside their crease but not prepared to take a hit ? Well then, don't wander out. Rant end

Pens clearly want the Cup ? No way, I thought they wanted cookies. Morrow and Murray might help the team short term. Although Murray is slooooooow, he could almost play for the Bruins. Not sure the Pens need those guys anyway, the East sucks at this point , they could probably get to the finals even without Malkin.

They acquired them for short term? No way Danny! Thought they were gonna sign 6 year deal as soon as they landed in Pitt. They clearly added Murray for his physic play and nothing else. If they want to have a chance against the West in the final they need both of them.

John Cooper will replace Guy Boucher as the head-coach of Tampa Bay. Too bad it's not gonna change anything for the Lightning in this short season.
