Gagne has been traded to Tampa Bay.

What contract is Kovalchuk getting? Would like to see a limit put in place for a maximum length of a contract say 5 years. While this won't be as big as the 15 year deals that had been done it is still a biggie especially if he were to get a bad injury and not be the same player.

This is just ridiculous IMO.

I didn't thought Gagné was so wortless now. I know he's a injury prone but I wasn'T prepare for such an "ordinary" trade.

Yeah, Paul Holmgren continues to prove he isn't the sharpest knife in the NHL's drawer.

I think fans are starting to get continuing to be fed-up with many of his decisions, and this Gagne low-ball is not at all going to help.

To be fair, though: I think any trade involving Gagne was going to be met with anger. However, getting such a small return? He deserves the criticism for that, I think.

You have to consider if there was a better offer, Holmgren would have sent Gagne to another team. But there was apparently not much interest in him. He's been a good player, now on the decline and very injury prone.
But the key is his salary. Teams that are financially able to spend to the cap already do so and have no cap room left. The smaller teams, (e.g Nashville, Florida) can't afford, they have their hands tied financially. They loose money by not making the playoffs because of the small gate receipts. So all they can do is bring in young players, and move out big salary themselves (Arnott).

So it's all about production vs. contract size. Why did the Flyers want to trade Gagne so hard? If his production is considered to be weak compared to his contract size, why would any other team want him?

Hell yeah it is. Some much needed offensive depth. The Bolts vastly improved their roster this offseason. Stevie Y is bringing some of that magic from Detroit.

Gagne was trade because of the cap too. Because I'm sure if Philly would've been able to keep him, they would've keep him.

He's certainly been injury prone recently, but I would hardly consider him on any decline. His points-to-games ratio, at a glance, is just about right where it's always been, with these 2009-10 playoffs being one of his best post-seasons. He scored more goals than he ever has, more points than he ever has, and recorded his third-best in assists. Not to mention the intangible fact that he was the one who kept our playoff alive. And this was all coming off an injury.

Despite Holgren's tip-toeing around the salary dump question, we all know it had to be done financially... but to get a depth defenseman, and a useless 4th-round draft pick for one of our franchise players? That's terrible. And then to have Holmgren give us his usual praise of what we got, claiming it's just what we need? That's insulting.

I know Gagne to TB was a salary dump but that was bad. Before the trade happened, all I heard was Gagne to LA if they didn't get Kovalchuk. I'm surprised LA didn't offer more than TB. LA just makes more sense, doesn't it? He'd be out of the Flyers' conference.

When does the current CBA expire? I wonder if they're going to rework things to do away with the super-long-term deals like Kovalchuk's. Why have a salary cap if it's so easy to skirt it? I'm not pointing a finger at New Jersey specifically because a lot of teams (my Bruins included) are doing it. It just seems to defeat the purpose of the cap.

2012. I kind of believe that is what New Jersey was hoping to do with the Kovalchuck deal. Get him for 6 million for two years and hope they can get out of the contract after the CBA falls apart and we have another lockout.

If he love's money he will go khl, if he love the game he stays in nhl. His salary isn't going to be low in nhl but a littlebit lower than khl teams would pay him i think.

Unfortunately I believe the contract will end up being accepted after player union appeals. Battle lines drawn. I wonder how much Lou had to do with league rejecting. He basically stated this was his owner's deal at the press conference, as the Devils are in a big market with a new building to fill. I can see ol Leaping Lou talking to Buttman behind the back of the owner of the Devils, and saying this is a stupid deal. Giving Buttman some kind of info, as Lou sees the Devlis as HIS team. Especially since Lou has always hated these long term contracts and swore he would not give one out.

Gagne--This deal is just like the one that got the Canucks Erhoff, and Lukowich last summer,save that it was two worthless prospects instead of a worthless player and pick. With the way the CBA is there are going to be more of these deals. Guys just do not have a choice. Gagne is a good 2nd line player when healthy. 2nd liners who are older are making too much money for what they produce. Gagne is one of those, and noone would take him (of the clubs he said he would go to) for any kind of price. So...had to find someone willing to take it on. When Holmgren did that...dump. He would have dealt him to Tampa for just the pick...except had to get something, and what better to get in Philly than a semi tough defenseman?

But wouldn't you think that LA would've been a better trading partner for a dump? They've got the cap room and LA was reportedly very interested in Gagne.

Maybe, but LA has a lot of young dmen, and no older ones that are worthless. And their pick would not be as high. Really guys...Gagne was going to draw nothing as it was.
