I agree that all well paid centers like Gomez,Drury to take Langkow job would be a strange move since he works hard, and everything else you guys already said, but I'm thinking about the 1st line. how would work Iginla, Gomez (or someone else), Tanguay. Come on this line with Langkow never sparked! Langkow is a 2nd liner most.
With the new NHL rules a small fast guy can make a lot of damage, right?

HUGE overpayment on Derek Roy!!! $4 million a year, he was only on $627,000, i agree that they need to sign as many of there players, but that is surely too much, the sabres are having one of the worst off seasons in history,
1) not too good a draft, no 1st rounders,
2) losing their 2 main players
3) overpayin for lesser players to make up for number 2

WHen you consider what Vanek and Penner got...I guess Roy got underpaid...because he is better than Penner, and worse than Vanek. Sabres had no choice because of what is going down with the other RFA's. It would have been worse had arbitration come. This is what K.Lowe is doing to the league.
Get ready folks..soon we will be hearing about teams losing big $, and the league having to do something about the crazy escalating salaries....not going to be pretty.

Somebody needs to pull Lowe aside and tell him to chill out!
So Roy is getting $4M per? The one article I read (linked above by Systemfel) didn't give out terms of the deal. Yeah, it's an overpayment but I still say that Buffalo really couldn't afford to lose any good players. Plus, as batdad said, it could've been worse if an arbitrator looked at the Vanek and Penner deals. Plus, I wonder if they were worried that Lowe might sign Roy to an offer sheet if Burke matches the Penner deal.

Not if Bruins..when. THe arbitrator has to look at those awards. And Roy is definitely a comparable. Especially since he was Vanek's linemate for much of the season.
Lowe could not give Roy an offer sheet. Offer sheets are not allowed to go to those who have elected arbitration.
But the comparable issues is the problem. There are some major issues with the fact that GM's are starting to pay for what is expected, instead of what is already proven.

Systemfel--The key is "might look like a steal". These young guys being paid like they have already been 40 goal scorers 3 times over is the problem for the NHL. In the past, now and always. It is silly to throw this kind of money away..when the only reason the league's revenues are increasing is the 30% increase in the Canadian dollar over the last 2-3 years. It is artificial. Somewhere in this forum I believe there is a link to an article showing that almost half (or more) of the league's revenue comes from the 6 Canadian teams. I mean, for god sake's Edmonton was 7th in revenues in the league last season. Ouch.
So...when/if the $ goes down, when/if the revenues go down, the league salary structure is going to collapse on its own head. The owners did not do enough to protect themselves from themselves.
Now...the new way they shaft each other...is to pay millions to players who have never proven they are worth millions. So freaking short sited. You could say that in 4 years the Roy contract"may" look like a steal...Maybe. But what about the other players. They may all look like steals too... or not. Guaranteed 2 or 3 out of every 5 will be bad news. And that just screws the product and the league..both on and off the ice.
It is too bad...but the owners/managers better smarten up or it won't be long before you have a 10 goal scorer making $10 mill per year, playing on the 4th line. Dumb dumb dumb

I agree, hence my suggestion of salary limits for RFAs. I know an unrealistic one, but nonetheless.
It's really stupid. Getting 4.5m, or 7m after one good season. Reminds me of European football, just that there's no salary cap and the top teams have payrolls of 150m and don't care about a few milions more because of TV deals worth billions.

Finally I have been waiting for this for 2 days.
And there will be more from Burke when he announces match, or go to hell Dustin. "Driving to the airport" may be part of the take.
Ah Brian...oh how I miss thee in Vancouver. The rhetoric I love it.
The best: "Sedin is not Swedish for hug me, squeeze me hold me slash me."
Burke is so full of it...
Who did not see this one coming? What is funny is Lowe and Burke were fishing together last weekend. Wonder if they spoke about Dustin?Brian Burke lashed out at Kevin Lowe on Friday night, calling the offer sheet to Dustin Penner "an act of desperation" by a GM "fighting to keep his job."

I would let Penner go, i have been reviewing everything, and 2 main people jumped to mind, Getzlaf and Perry, they are due to be RFA next summer, and if Penner is on $4.5 a season, them 2 won't be happy, as we won't be able to afford them for that
Penner is 24, and yet to prove himself fully at the leagues top level, and $4.5 is more than stars like Mike Modano and Teemu Selanne and the same as Patrick Marleau, Penner just isn't worth, Burke said we'll get the decision sunday or monday

I'm not sure if the picks mean a lot, i think the oilers are on the up, and with pretty much a whole new team, they cud finish highly, obviously meaning we get a lower pick, even though we draft poorly anyway
, but if we were to get a high pick this draft is meant to be better than this years, so who knows

Sure, Pitkanen is a good addition for the Oilers, but he is a bit alone. The Oils don't have enough firepower to score a lot against teams like Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota, or Colorado, all their division rivals, and then they don't have a solid enough defense to stop those opponent's offenses, and so they'll end (IMO) dead last in NW and somewhere around the 20th-25th rank overall, which means a top-5 ot top-10 pick in the first round
But then, keep in mind that i'm a Flames fan talking about the Oilers!

Am I the only one who thinks Burke is being a hypocrite here ?
I mean, I can understand his frustration, you get a decent player for the league minimum out of nowhere and after one solid season another GM is throwing over 4m at him. He's spot on when he says it's ok what the Oilers are doing but it's stupid HOW they are doing it.
BUT, how dare he complain about the Oilers driving up the prices for 29 other teams when he just threw 4m p/a at the biggest post-lockout underachiever ?!
Lowe isn't driving up the prices to any bigger extent than those who are paying 6m for the likes of Markov or 7m for the likes of Drury or Gomez.
Certainly it's ridiculous what Lowe is trying to do, putting aside that he's willing to overpay big time he's also widdling off 29 other GMs. But hardly any GM has the right to complain he's driving up the market prices, how many decent deals have we seen this offseason ? The only one that comes to my mind is LA/Preissing. A few others are ok and the vast majority are big time overpayments. Screws up the market just as Lowe's strategy.
Rant over, feel free to flame me

Habs sign Ryder for 1 year
No terms released yet. But avoided the scary, hairy arbitrtor who would have given him Vanek or Penner money.
