Wow that's incredible! It shows how important the success and survival of all teams in the Elite League is vital for the league's survival. The closeness between teams demonstrated by this is fantastic. I wonder if we'd see this sort of thing in other British sports... Probably not.

I plan to go see the Invicta Dynamos' first game of the season this Sunday. They're at home against Milton Keynes. I'm very curious to see what level of skill I will see on display and whether they'll be able to hook me into going to see most/all of their home games. It's great they're only a 15-20 minute bus ride away!

Nick - are you going to be able to see many Phoenix games this season? I guess with Kit and Tom back in your student flat (they have moved back in, haven't they?) you will have a few more people to go with? Are Selfridges and studies going to prevent you from going?

How much is a ticket in Britain? Would be nice to compare. I find that tickets here are too pricey. Standing room for Färjestad, the team from the town I live in, is around £10 and seats up to more than twice that, so I never go to any games (that and I hate the team)

For the Elite league:
Basingstoke is £13
Cardiff is £14.50
Coventry is £15
Edinburgh is £15
Hull is £12
Manchester is £15
Newcastle is £13.50
Nottingham is £15.50
Sheffield is £13.50

So quite a bit of variation, most of those prices are advance prices, if you go on the Match day you'll end up paying more(upto about £2 more)

It's pretty embarrassing what happened at Manchester last Sunday. The game had to be abandoned and decided on a shoot-out after the ice was deemed so bad that it was unsafe to play on. I've always thought the ice looked in a bad way at Manchester - I guess they still haven't managed to sort that out.

It's getting relayed as we speak and they are apparently putting logos on the ice for the first time!
Unfortunately Phoenix have no say in the running of the rink, they are tenants but a major 2 or 3 hour public skating session will make more money than a Phoenix game hence the rink have put off relaying the ice until school holidays are over which then ran over into the first home game of the season

Basingstoke are still missing a few players due to Visas/Zoom going bust and Edinburgh have also been hit due to Zoom going bust and the new Visa processes. Both teams missed their starting netminders at the weekend as well as a few imports.

The Hull - Notts game kicked off majorly with Marc Levers requiring 25 stitches in his head after Rick Kozak fought him and he then skated off the ice kicking Levers' blood as he left.... There were also a few other fights in the game.

The Phoenix game had to be abandoned due to the poor ice surface but that's getting fixed this week and hopefully they'll have no more problems in the coming season.

Also Phoenix should be at full strength this weekend with Kenton Smith and Luke Fulghum both flying in for Friday. Nottingham will definitely have Jade Galbraith and may have Dan Tessier as well

Some people have questioned why they dont step back up to the EPL ?? the rumor seems to be that they cant get a good enough sponsor to make it worth while.............shame really be good to see em play in a competitive league instead of 1 where they win it every year

Didn't expect the punishments to be this harsh for Kozak and Voth!!
EIHL set the tone with stiff suspensions.

Following unsavoury incidents in both the Nottingham Panthers vs Hull Stingrays and Cardiff Devils vs Sheffield Steelers games last Sunday, the bmibaby Elite League have meted out severe punishments on Hull forward Rick Kozak and Cardiff captain Brad Voth.

Kozak has been suspended for a total of ten games for Sucker-Punching an opponent and Bringing the game into Disrepute with a further ten games suspended for a repeat offence, while Voth has received a twelve-game ban for Sucker-Punching an opponent and Slashing to the back of an opponents legs with a further twelve suspended again pending a repeat offence.

A league spokesman commented, “Ice hockey is a very physical sport as everyone is well aware, and occasionally tempers flare and there are flashpoint incidents. However, the games last Sunday saw incidents that we feel are beyond what is the normally acceptable in terms of physical contact and we felt the need to adjudicate strongly.”

“A lot of discussion took place over the summer recruiting period about teams bringing in players to ‘entertain’ and we have no problem with that philosophy. We are a professional sport however, also acknowledge that we are all in the entertainment business but, there are limits to what is and what is not acceptable. After extensive video review, the incidents involving both Rick Kozak and Brad Voth have been deemed as being unacceptable, and it is our duty to ensure that we send a message to all the clubs, the coaching staff and all the players as to what will not be tolerated.”

Here's a video of the Kozak/Levers thingy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkm9Vrs32Qk Although you can't see a lot, they're the 2 fighting at the bottom of the screen that go out of view. Levers is the one lying on the ground in the blood

So it's like seeing lambs to the slaughter every weekend! It's a bit of a shame there's not greater greater competition but I'm just happy to have a hockey team right on my door step.

Nick - that fight seems quite vicious. The video isn't the best example of steady camera work, though! I'm really looking forward to seeing the new ice with the logos on Sunday

The Hull - Nottingham game is on Sky tomorrow so I'll record it and it should hopefully have a proper view of the incident. Kozak got 6 game suspension for the actual act of hurting Levers and then the other 4 matches was for skating through the pool of blood and kicking it....

Here's a video of the Voth fight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jmlU7KPk1U altho it doesn't have the incident which started it off which is what I think Voth got suspended for. I think he got a higher penalty because he has history - he got a 6 game suspension last year for a hit on ashley tait.

I'm looking forward t Sunday now, it's been a while since I saw any hockey and sounds as though Phoenix have a good team. I also want to see Dan Tessier of the Panthers, he's got 146 points in 96 games in the EIHL for Nottingham and Sheffield.

Wow Manchester are on fire at the moment! They've won every single game apart from one this season. I think I'm a jinx on them as I went to last Sunday's game and it was the one they lost. They always seem to lose when I go see them  :-D

Yeah it's a fantastic start to the season - a real contrast to the past few seasons. Let's hope we can keep it up!

Did you go see the game? I was getting text message updates from Nick (Calv) as he was at the game :D

I didn't get the chance to no but i was speaking to a few people afterwards during our practice and they said it was a good game but we underestimated Edinburgh. And they also said that Tony Hand isn't have the best of years and there thinking he will retire halfway through the year! What ya think?

Yeah Edinburgh came out of the block early and Phoenix were asleep a little in the first minute. They then put the pressure on but were caught out again at the back in the 7th minute when Edinburgh went 2 up. They carried on attacking and looked the stronger of the two teams and deservedly got 4 unanswered goals, unfortunately they sat back a bit after this and let in 2, despite this I think they were unlucky not to win in regulation time as they had a lot more shots than Edinburgh, 39 to 28.

After seeing Phoenix twice this season I think they've got a good chance of a top half finish, there are only questions over their defence.

Murphy seems OK, drops to his pads very quickly and flops around a bit but has had 2 very good games(last night against Sheffield and earlier on in the season where he got MOM). When I've seen him he's only had one major mistake and that was playing the puck straight to a Nottingham player who put it in the net.

The defence is a little shakey and lacks a bit of size. Parrish is a little slow but has good compsure and Smith looks good going forward. Boothroyd looks like a very handy young Brit D-Man.

The forward lines look very good and more balanced than last year, with them lining up:
Beauregard - Hand - Fulghum
Clouthier - Jacobsen - Walker
Bruce - Ward - Mulherin

The top line has 2 very good players in Beauregard and Fulghum. Beauregard has a great eye for goal and will score shedloads this season - he also makes penalty shots look very easy! Fulghum is all over the ice and has good stickhandling although he seems more of a setup man than a goalscorer. Tony is looking a little off the pace this season - maybe one season too many, however he did manage 2 assists last night so maybe it was just a bad day at the office for him.

The 2nd line has good size with Cloots and Jacobsen, and Walker looks like a difference player when he's with imports. Jacobsen looks like a good setup man and Clouthier and Walker can both score goals.

The 3rd line has Bruce who seems to score loads and fight loads! Ward gets on with his job unspectacularly and Mulherin seems to be a good goalscorer.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!
