Perhaps his aggression attr needs a boost?

Schultz's Aggression Attribute is 18, so I left it as is.
I changed his Bravery from 2 to 15. Agitation is already at 20, Fighting is 18, Dirtyness 15.
We'll see how the Bravery change affects things...

RE "barely 200 PIM a season" - I wonder what his ATOI is? Maybe the computer barely uses him?
In reality he often played on the top line ("protecting" Bobby Clarke)...back in an era where 20 goals in a season was impressive, Shultz actually had 20 goals (and 348 PIM) in 1973-74...AND I wonder if EHM gives fewer Misconducts? (I know I long ago made the refs in EHM "more lenient")

I'll check his ATOI next time I'm in the game, but you may be right that it has to do with the AI's use of him... I know in one of my early plays with the test DB, I got Schultz and set him to fighting "encouraged"... and he got over 700 PIM one season.

Weird thing happened in my game. The CHL handed out it's season individual awards on March 13th before the regular season was even over.

Aggression is the att that controls willingness to fight.
I have no idea if bravery matters

I have to say, while I'm enjoying things a lot, the international competitions are rather realism-jarring... Russia losing 11:0 to the US, and then things like this from the World Cup:

...it's... I dunno, but it, for me anyways, affects the immersiveness a bit...

I'm surprised the Russians lost like they did to the US (no Tretiak?)...Slovakia didn't exist in 1974; I put Czechs and Slovaks on the Czech Republic (to try to simulate the great teams Czechoslovakia had in the 1970s) - there are currently so few historical Europeans/Russians in the 1974 database (and all modern Europeans/Russians of "similar talent" have deen deleted), when eventually there will be hundreds/thousands more, so it'll get much better IMO

CURRENT EDITING WORK (I have been and continue to go back and forth between multiple things)
- further editing of historical AHL/CHL players
- adding historical AHL/CHL Staff (new_staff file already completed for Major Junior)
- adding additional historical European/Russian players
- adding additional historical WHL/OHL players
- and more!

P.S. There really are very few historical European/Russian players currently in the 1974 db!...only two teams in the Russian Elite League start with players: Moscow C has nine players (6F+2D+1G) and Moscow D has eight players (7F+1D)...Sweden has 9 players in their Elite League, the Czech Republic has 10 players in their Elite League, Finland/Germany/Slovakia have 0 players in their Elite Leagues

Well, hopefully future edits to include more European players will help things!

In my current game, here's Canada's records in World Championships and World Cup: (I'm just starting 08-09 season)

2007 World Championships:
Canada - Czech 4:0
Canada - USA 8:1
Canada - Russia 4:2

2008 World Championships:
Canada - Russia 7:4
Canada - Czech 11:0
Canada - Russia 13:0
Canada - Sweden 10:0

2008 World Cup:
Canada - Russia 11:0
Canada - Russia 16:2
Canada - USA 5:1
Canada - Sweden 10:0

USA isn't unreasonable, they win probably more than they did back in the 70s, but they've also lost quite a few, like 5:2 to the Swedes, and in another competition, 4:2 to Russia... (and yeah, I checked the 11:0 game, Tretiak wasn't playing due to injury). But Tretiak here or there, Russia gets completely destroyed by Canada, even with a reasonable-looking roster.

Today I was actually working on ensuring everyone from the 1972 Summit Series Team Russia is in the 1974 db...defensemen like Ragulin, Tsygankov, Liapkin and Gusev are all missing (currently in the 1974 db the Russians have only 3 defensemen!); missing forwards include Blinov, Shadrin, Anisin, Zimin, Bikulov and Bodunov...adding talented/veteran players like these and many more I'm sure will make a difference!

Yeah the Russians have few d-men, and also I think some of the younger Russians don't develop right... which is why you see an OHL Selects team thrash the Russians 11-0 even though the Russians have players that should probably be a bit further along in their development than they are in-game. I think guys like Fetisov, Makarov, etc, need their starting attributes tweaked to bring them further along from the start.

I also was surprised at low Boris Mikhalov is rated. I expected better attributes out of him, given the way his name is treated as legend.

They were purposely made excessively low at start-up to try to keep them out of the NHL (and it still doesn't work!)...are you sure that Fetisov/Makarov/etc even stay in Russia to play the OHL selects?

There are only a couple dozen young historical European/Russians in the entire database, and they seem to come to NA right away!
There are HUNDREDS of available players to choose from for Canada and the US, and literally a handful at best from an EU country...

Unfortunately Riz/SI created a game where the entire EU is essentially a minor league to NA...it doesn't seem possible to make an Elite League as desirable as NA! So any effort to "fix this" just results in more Europeans/Russians in the NHL...

To be honest this problem was HUGE to me...I almost permanently deleted ALL historical Europeans/Russians, because I created a 1974 database to simulate the 1970s/1980s NOT the 1990s/2000s - but it's turned out that it's really difficult to keep decent EU players in the EU, and I've had to accept this...

Some aspects of the game (Reputation/Contracts/etc) seem editable but the edits don't really work as expected (as Merla has recently experienced when trying to create a "Lockout Database" http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 43#p145543)

Primis wrote:I also was surprised at low Boris Mikhalov is rated. I expected better attributes out of him, given the way his name is treated as legend.
I suspect his Atts are based on 1979-80 (Pens66 database) when Mikhailov was 35!
Almost all of my efforts over the last two years have been to try to keep Europeans/Russians in Europe/Russia and out of the NHL (without success!)…haven’t been looking closely at their Atts

I am now adding more Europeans/Russians...but it takes MONTHS to accomplish a fraction of what needs doing, so it's a "best I can" policy...

I'm in 2008/1976 right now on my personal game with the DB. I have not touched it or modified it in the least (I often heavily edit even the Lidas/Manimal DB's to get things the way I want), so I could see how the DB really works to try and help you out.

I drafted the rights to Makarov and Fetisov myself so they're still in Russia, though I can't imagine they would get signed and come over right away honestly with their development. Alexei Kasatonov has not been drafted yet either and is playing for the Russian U20's as well.

I signed Tretiak myself to play for DET after a real hassle to do so, after two seasons he speaks fluent English and has been solid for me (though never a Vezina nominee even). I've actually been considering trying to flip Tretiak for someone else but I think the problem is my d-men, not him. Kharlamov never signed with anyone. I also signed Alexander Yakushev and Sergei Kapustin to DET, but they took even longer to convince (only got Kapustin just a few game months ago). Yakushev was a star from Day One, Kapustin is... inconsistent and struggling at times, and I dunno' if he'll pan out in North America.

Maltsev is still in Russia with Moscow D and is regularly vying with Mikhalov and Kharlamov for the Russian scoring lead. Fetisov, Makarov, and others signed with teams other than Moscow C and Moscow D, including Steve Sutherland, Ron Snell, and Bill Evo who are among the league leaders. Nikolai Drozdetsky remains in Russia with Magnitogorsk, with Colorado owning his rights. I thought an NHL team might make a go at signing Valery Vasiliev at D (because he's considerably better than a lot of d-men already in the NHL), but he remains with Moscow D. 16 of the Top 20 scorers in Russia are with Moscow C, Moscow D, or Moscow K still.

(BTW, Sergei Kolosev is still in the DB and is a modern player that should probably be removed).

Marian Stastny is simply not signable (he's not allowed out until after his contract expires, which is in like 12 years or something wonky which I assume was the intent to keep him there) and is currently the single best non-NHL player in the game and looks to be so for a long time as a result.

As for the SEL, Anders Kallur and Dan Labraatan are still there alog with a 16 year old Hakan Loob. Leif Svensson and Kent-Erik Andersson are also still in the SEL. Doug Grant ended up tending goal with Frolunda after I gave up on him and didn't renew his contract in DET, and he's dominating over there (18-0 so far on the season). Some SEL players have been signed and come over, but haven't been particularly successful. Lars lindgren was signed from MODO but has been so-so in the NHL.

In Finland, I don't recognize anyone. I think a lot of them are modern leftover players filling out the rosters. I see an awful lot of North American names there. Same for the Swiss league and the DEL.

In the Czech League Marian Stastny and Ivan Hlinka remain. But a modern player that should be removed, Jaroslav Balastik, is 3rd in scoring.

Overall my experience with Euros, particularly the Russians, is that you can sign some, but most all stay and even if you push hard you can't get some at all. Hope this all helps. I don't think the Euro Exodus is as bad as you fear. It just hasn't been for me. Had I not signed Yakushev and Kapustin I don't think either would have been signed by anyone else even. Tretiak is the one that might have from Russia.

By the way... another weird little thing. Canadian staff member (GM/Coach) John Wilson won't sign with anyone for anything. He rejects everything, including National Team positions. Any idea why this is? He has pretty good staff attributes and should probably be helping someone somewhere. He resigned from Ottawa at the game's start, and even though many teams in many leagues have made runs at him he never signs.

In my game, very few of the established 25+ year old Europeans were signed to come over, except the one I signed (Anders Kallur); the rest have all stayed. Yakushev and Kharlamov will not come over, they refuse any offer they get. Tretiak will come over, but nobody will sign him if you yourself don't... at least, I've never yet seen it happen.

However, of the young/draftable guys, several have been drafted and come over - Fetisov, Makarov and Drozdetsky most notably.

I've had the same issue with Marian Stastny being unsignable - except that you try to sign him, he agrees, then it gets cancelled, saying that it can take place only at the next transfer window - which it tells you is the /next day/.

A funny news headline from my current game: "Block put on the block".

Thanks very much for the detailed feedback Primis, it really is appreciated...

I think you'll find age is a big determining factor too (even with brutal starting CAs, I suspect all those that start as Juniors will be in the NHL)...

Also keep in mind I've deleted all the modern players in the Elite Leagues (and since the release of the 1974 db I've deleted almost 5000 more players/staff!)...so the number of players you see coming over is based on less than 100 players total that could come over! Less than 50 are available to come over at start-up that aren't Juniors! I suspect when there's THOUSANDS of historical European/Russian players instead of 50, you'll see MANY more come over

A couple weeks before the release of the 1974 db I edited the CAs of the young European/Russians (Juniors) to levels that are basically considered "Good" in Bantam Hockey! They're essentially average US High School players at start-up! I did this right before release, without giving it any testing, because the testing I had done showed if they were given "appropriate ratings" they were in the NHL and excelling by 2008/1976

From what I can tell SI created a hockey world where a CA that is "average-poor" in the NHL is the absolute Top level of anyone playing in an EU Elite League...so unless you make the EU Elite Leagues significantly lower skilled than the ECHL/CHL I think the problem can’t be fixed – like I said above, I’ve had to accept this

Primis wrote:Canadian staff member (GM/Coach) John Wilson won't sign with anyone for anything. He rejects everything, including National Team positions. Any idea why this is?
No idea...weird (I've added taking a closer look to my list of things to do)

RE EUROPEANS/RUSSIANS – a point I want everyone to understand is they haven't been done yet!
It's an immense, multi-year process to create a database with even just the shell of the needed players in there...my focus has been on NA (unlike any other retro database that I'm aware of, the 1974 db has historical Staff, historical minor leaguers, historical teams in Minor Pro/Major Junior, etc AND I'm still working on the AHL/CHL and Major Junior players two years later!).....the EU hasn't really been touched!

There are about 70-100 Elite League teams that need populating, plus Junior Leagues!...we're talking THOUSANDS of players!
So I'm not surprised in a hockey world that needs thousands of players, having only a few dozen provides wonky results!
One guy working in his spare time can only do so much! HaHa

I honestly can't believe more people aren't playing this DB. It's the single biggest EHM DB mod we've ever seen. It ranks up there with Chip's 1980 mod for the original freeware EHM.

I think the Challenge is quiet because we're all coming back from the usual quiet summer months. I can't tell how many downloads there have been, but the download thread has had approx 500 hits in under three weeks. That's a pretty high number in comparison to other download threads. :-)

And then there may be people like me who are playing it but aren't in the Challenge... maybe I should be, though, though I'm having fun with my slightly-modified DB (I replaced the Totems with my favourite WHA team, the Cincinnati Stingers), and of course spending more time on the player history stuff than actually playing. :P

I've tossed a couple of comments into the Challenge thread but am not playing it. I'm merely playing a for-fun game with the DB. I want the freedom to do what I want to if need be. So I stockpile assets, and then trade them away cheap or overpay for things to teams I like.

This is just a great DB. I know the 70's are a time a lot of us aren't familiar with but... what better reason to play it then?

An unfortunate observation: Patrick Flatley has retired. I`m in 08-09, so he`s like, 13 years old. This has me worrying about other, younger guys doing the same as the game progresses...

I think a few might, but it doesn't seem very many retire early (not sure if it's something that can be fixed, or maybe it's something the game does to represent some youngsters just don't pan out)

Ah, okay. Well maybe in a next game, he won't retire but someone else will. Ah well! Just so long as Lemieux and Roy don't!

Something I did for fun, that actually turned out alright, I think...

I also did a version without the logo to use as the 'default.png' and 'office.png' files... and I'm thinking to do team-specific versions too if I can find enough appropriate/usable photos to do it with.

Hope Nino doesn't mind the semi-hijack... if you like them let me know and I'll send them to you. Just figured that a shot from the 1975 final would be more appropriate than a shot from the 2005 (?) final!

I LOVE IT!

As the database "starts" in August 1974 wouldn't 1974 be more appropriate?

Yes please!

I haven't used the default pics since back when I first started, over two years ago!
IIRC I've got a couple black & white basic sets kicking around (and I've been collecting pics from the era); I've never added graphics to anything before myself

Here's the basic set I've been using for a long time...
