As the titile really. I am still rubbish at this game, and still need help on tactic building, but what is a fun (and NOT stanley cup material} team to play as?

And a s a side note, is the AHL fun the play in?

I agree =D> beside reading the Guide the Challenges are a great way to really learn the game because you are working from the same starting point as everyone else and in reading their updates of what they did with their team on their quest to make it successful you can "go to school" on their mistakes and successes. Even if you don't get great results from your own team be a part of a Challenge really can help you learn the game. There is plenty of time to still get in on our Montreal Challenge, just check out our Challenge Forum's Announce Threads for the full details!

To answer your actual question though 8-) any team you intend to play long-term really is a decent starting point, so pick a team you like! If you are looking for a real rebuilder that has a lot of strong youth talent Chicago and Anaheim have solid young players a few years from being ready for big-time play but could be the heart of a dynasty in the next 5-7 yrs probably. Or you could play Pittsburgh  but that's kinda the easy way out ;)

If you want to get a sense of what team's prospect futures look like an amazing resource is Hockey's Future. Here is a link to their Organizational Ranking summary page and you can work from there, the site is a fantastic for info on young players:

It's definitely a good idea to start with a team with a good stable of prospects if you are a novice, but once you get better, look at a team with older players that is pushing the cap limit. These teams usually have little in the way of prospects to build from, so you really kinda build your own team from scratch. I found it such a challenge with the avs, because I avoid winning the cup in the first season, as I don't feel that I would be winning it with "my" team, or the team that I assembled. So the challenge becomes building with high draft choices, but also keeping the team competitive enough that you don't get fired in the early years. I almost got fired in my second year as the avs, but I managed to make a trade at the deadline that kept my results for the run-in just good enough to last the year.

I tried the AHL as the Grand Rapids Griffins (with the purpose of gaining an NHL job in the future), but I gave up after 20 games 'cause the Wings just kept getting injured and calling up like 80 % of my team.

You could always start the current challenge. It's only been running a week or two. Everyone plays it at their own pace. Head over to the challenge forum and check it out.

Why wait :dunno:

You can start right now, unlike I did when I joined around when the Carolina challenge began.

I regret it now, it's so much fun :joy:

Not to continue or support the continued Official Hijackingâ„¢ of your thread to talk about the Challenge but yeah there is certainly time and I only mention it again because we do have another new user who has just set out to work on his Challenge team today so you won't be alone in starting if you choose to give it a shot
