Fantasy Draft

Dabo is working on a project to create an unofficial successor to EHM 2007. Use this forum to discuss his project and any features you would like to see in either the initial version or in a future version.

Fantasy Draft

Post by Ogilthorpe »

Well, I'm surprised that there isn't a Fantasy Draft topic for DHM.

Hopefully dabo can add this feature somewhere down the line when he has the time after the basic game is up and running smoothly.

So.....NHL EHM 07 has a real nice setup for doing a fantasy draft. Is there anything that would make it better?

I like the way that it's done in EHM. I say try to replicate it and it'll be great.

I have personally never liked this feature but I guess it could be added.

Maybe it's more of a North American thing but I love that feature in EHM 07.
Of course it's entirely up to you dabo, if there is no real demand for it you could just leave it out.
I would be very happy with a new hockey GM game with a lot of the other requested features in it, the fantasy draft would be nice but if most people don't care for it then it's fine without it.

Maybe for the Canadian Junior Leagues, have CHL wide fantasy drafts. In EHM you could only do it for the specific leagues - an OHL fantasy draft OR a WHL one, etc. Would be interesting if all the teams from the 3 leagues could be in one fantasy draft. If possible.

Bad idea. The CHL leagues have geographical rules and the players are only allowed to play in the correct region

There should maybe be more news items about fantasy drafts than there was in EHM. It should be a big deal, lots of coverage, reports, and controversy - maybe have some "former GMs" appear as saying it's a dumb idea but the league saying it's necessary for reason X. Would just make it a little more interesting I feel. Also unllike EHM, the draft shouldn't occur immediately when the game starts, if possible. Give us a week or two to do a light scout of the league, consider our budget, talk to the coaches etc etc, so we can make the right calls. It also felt in EHM as though NHL teams in fantasy drafts would take unproven prospects higher than they should go, making it easy to stock up on veterans and ready to go players and coast to victory in the 1st season.

Heh, I like to do a Fantasy Draft every once in awhile with EHM 07.

I used to do the Yahoo NHL Fantasy Draft but found that the people either cheated with another person or a few just gave up after they did the drafting part, needless to say that is frustrating. The GM AI in EHM isn't all that great but at least it won't cheat or quit.

One thing I've always disliked about the fantasy draft in EHM 2007 is that if you don't make it so that all player attributes are visible, you have nothing other than names to base your selections on because many of the players haven't been scouted yet. That's always bothered me. If you're going to do a fantasy draft, you should be provided with some sort of scouting report on all of the players. Also, it's been ages since I've used the fantasy draft feature but is there a way to track how much salary you've taken on during the fantasy draft? Too many times you go after the best players available and end up unable to keep them due to the salary cap.

What might be more interesting than a fantasy draft is an expansion draft. Allow teams a certain number of players to protect (along with younger players not having to be protected) and then let the new team(s) pick from the unprotected players. This might be a bit more interesting in the salary cap era than it was the last time the league expanded. And maybe a dispersal draft to divvy up players if the league contracts?

Maybe during the fantasy draft make all pro players attributes available and give all amateur prospects a full scouting report? Then revert things to normal following the draft?

I'd love to see an expansion draft added one day. I remember the EA games had that feature when the Predator etc were added to the league. It was kinda fun building my Predators.
Though I'd want the ability to make trades with teams so that you select a player of their choosing or don't pick a specific player, and in return you get an extra asset from them. I remember that happened a few times during the expansion drafts and it happens occasionally in the Entry Draft.

Agreed, I'd rather have an expansion/dispersal draft (and also if there could be one a draft for a one-for-one relocation not affecting the number of teams in the league?) than a fantasy draft feature. But I'm greedy; both would be great!

When I do a Fantasy Draft in EHM07 I always have my team pick last in each round and usually try to pick young players, minor leaguers and a few older players to balance out the team.
So my team is about the same as an expansion team anyways. This gives me a challenge for about two/three seasons until I build up my team through trades and drafting Jr. players.
Trading your way to a winning team is way too easy in EHM07, I hope Dabo has a few ideas that will address this.
