I must admit that I haven't heard of Bernard, but I must say that that is such sad timing.

Archie, "Bum-Bum" was one of the great goal scorers from the 50-60s. He spent 16 years in the NHL, 14 with the Habs and his last 2 with the Rangers.

Here his NHL Totals:

Was this the guy that "invented" the slapshot?

RIP, Boom-Boom.

Yup.

IIRC, he was also only the second person (after teamate, The Rocket) to score 50 goals in one season.

RIP Boom Boom :-(

It is of course hindsight due to a tragic turn of events but some people were commenting today that he was 75 and they were upset that it took them this long to honor him. Obviously they have had near 35 years since he was inducted into the HoF fer cryin out loud.

In any case it's a real shame to lose a legend like that

Interestingly enough, Boom Boom's great teammate, Rocket Richard, never led the NHL in points.

He was leading one year, when he attacked a linesman and subsequently found himself suspended for the remainder of the season and playoffs. This sparked off the Rocket Riot in Montreal that resulted in much of downtown Montreal getting destroyed, and the league president, Clarence Campbell getting attacked in the stands by Montreal fans.

It only stopped the next day when Richard went on the radio and begged people to go home.

Hard to imagine Barry Bonds or David Beckham or Mats Sundin having that kind of effect on people.

At the end of the year, Boom Boom had indeed scored more points than the Rocket, resulting in Richard never winning the scoring champuionship.

Boom Boom was booed by his own fans when he passed the Rocket in points.

RIP Boom Boom
