Top Dogs: The Niagara IceDogs Story

Note: For this game I am using the Lidas3.0 rosters.



August 2nd

The Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League today announced the hiring of Mark Addison as their new General Manager. Addison played minor pro hockey in the CHL, and for the last several years returned home to St. Catharines, and had been the General Manager of the St. Catharines Jr. B Falcons of the Greater Ontario Hockey League. The fans and Board of the IceDogs are excited by the hiring, and expect that the IceDogs will make the playoffs this season.

Addison's first order of business was a staff housecleaning, and the following were fired:

Marty Williamson, Head Coach
Billy Burke, Assistant Coach
Frank Girhiny, Assistant Coach
Mike Van Ryn, Assistant Coach

The scouting staff has been kept on. The team has no trainer.

The IceDogs release winger Dylan MacEachern to comply with restrictions on the number of overage players.

The IceDogs release the rights to overage winger Josh Dadic.

The IceDogs have released their pre-season schedule, starting with a three game tour of the USA.

The IceDogs announce the completion of a trade with the Kitchener Rangers, sending the rights to center Michael Casele of the Jr. B Stoney Creek Warriors to the Rangers in exchange for the rights to winger Kyle Woodhouse of the St. Catharines Jr. B Falcons.

The IceDogs announce the signing of winger Cameron Stewart from the Niagara Falls Canucks of the Greater Ontario Hockey League. Stewart is 18 years old, and has never played a major junior hockey game.

The IceDogs announce the signing of defenseman Joey De Concilys from the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Hockey League. De Concilys is 17 years old, and has never played a major junior hockey game.

The IceDogs announce the signing of winger Paul Thompson from the Brantford 99ers of the Alliance Pavilion League. Thompson is 18 years old, and has never played a major junior hockey game.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Christian Caron as an Assistant Coach.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Brad Hall, and Scott Livingston as Trainers.

The IceDogs announce the signing of winger Kyle Woodhouse from the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Hockey League. Woodhouse is 16 years old, and has never played a major junior hockey game.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Terry Penner as Assistant GM.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Randy Hillier as an Assistant Coach.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Tim Higgins, and Jeff Bandura as Scouts.

The IceDogs announce the hiring of Dennis Scott as a Trainer.

The IceDogs begin their American Tour with a stop to play the Saginaw Spirit. Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped only 17 of the 22 shots he faced in the game, and though the IceDogs took an early 2-0 lead, four goals by Saginaw in the second period put the game out of reach!

The IceDogs continue their American Tour with a stop to play the Plymouth Whalers. Mark Visentin will get the start in goal for Niagara. Mark Visentin stopped all 25 shots he faced to record the shutout, as the IceDogs scored a goal in each period to secure the victory!

The IceDogs finish up their American Tour with a trip to play the US National Developement Team. Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced, and though the IceDogs scored early, the US team would score twice in the third to take the victory!

Mark Visentin will get the start in goal for Niagara. Mark Visentin stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced in the game, and though the Colts scored early in the third period to tie the game 3-3, the IceDogs would bounce back, scoring two more in the third to take the victory!

Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped only 10 of the 14 shots he faced in the game, before being pulled in favor of Mark Visentin, who stopped 5 of 6 shots the rest of the way, and Ottawa led 5-2 five minutes into the third, and though Niagara made a concerted comeback effort, they fell just short.

Mark Visentin will get the start in goal for Niagara. Mark Visentin stopped all 19 shots he faced in recording his second shutout of the preseason, and the IceDogs backed him up, scoring a goal in each of the three periods to lay claim to the victory!

The Niagara IceDogs opened training camp today with physical fitness testing. Showing exceptional fitness were center Freddie Hamilton, and winger Darren Archibald, while tryout players winger Joel Forestell, and center James Pursell left something to be desired.

Team Red and Team Blue skate to a 2-2 draw! Best performance was put in by defenseman Luke Mercer, with honours also going to center Ryan Strome, and winger Johnson Andrews.

Team Green defeat Team White 4-2! Tryout center James Purcell, and winger Jason Wilson were the best players on the ice.



The IceDogs open their preseason schedule, playing host to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in the game, and the IceDogs led 6-0 at the end of the second period, and only kept piling it on in the third!

Mark Visentin stopped only 19 of the 25 shots he faced in the game, and though the IceDogs fought back, scoring to tie the game 5-5 with just two minutes left, Montreal scored just seconds later to win the game!

The Hockey News released their OHL Season Preview today, and the Niagara IceDogs (Team MVP: LW Darren Archibald, Key New Face: G Mark Visentin) were ranked 4th out of the 20 OHL teams! Favorites to win the J.Ross Robertson Cup this season are the Windsor Spitfires, with the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors expected to give them a run for their money. The Guelph Storm, and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are expected to be strong contenders, while the Brampton Battalion, and Barrie Colts are expected to struggle.

IceDogs center Ryan Strome will miss three weeks with a hip flexor strain.

Team White defeat Team Blue 3-0! Defenseman Mike Schwindt, and center Steven Shipley were the best players on the ice.

Team Red defeat Team Green 3-2! Best performance was put in by winger Darren Archibald, with honours also going to centers Mitchell Theoret, and Freddie Hamilton.



The IceDogs travel to play the Brandon Wheat Kings. Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped all 23 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the preseason, and the IceDogs explode for seven goals in a lopsided victory!

The IceDogs open their season at home, playing host to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced in the game, but at the other end, Mississauga goaltender J.P. Anderson didn't allow a single goal in the victory!

The ISS have released their Preliminary Rankings for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and two IceDogs were ranked!

The top-ranked player was Drummondville Voltigeurs winger Sean Couturier, followed by Red Deer Rebels center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Nathan Beaulieu. The top-ranked OHL player was Peterborough Petes winger Matt Puempel at #4.

The ISS also released their Preliminary Rankings for the 2007 OHL Priority Selection!

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Owen Sound Attack. Backup goaltender Dalton McGrath will get the start in goal for Niagara. Dalton McGrath stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced, and though the Attack scored late in the second to tie the score 2-2, the IceDogs scored twice in the third to take the victory!

With the trade deadline looming, the IceDogs today announce the completion of a blockbuster deal, which should certainly improve their chances in this years playoffs, sending winger Andrew Agozzino, minor league defenseman Luke Mercer, minor league center Mitchell Theoret, and a 2nd Round Draft Pick to the Kitchener Rangers in return for Swedish winger Gabriel Landeskog.

Agozzino, the only player lost off the IceDogs roster, had played in 37 games with the IceDogs, and struggled, putting up just 13 (5+8) points, and was -10, with 29 penalty minutes.

Landeskog just returned from a disappointing World Juniors, which saw Sweden eliminated by Russia in the Quarter-Finals, however, he has been great for Kitchener this season, playing in 36 games, and putting up 28 (11+17) points, and was +12, with 20 penalty minutes.

Team Davidson defeat Team Cherry 5-4 in the CHL Top Prospects Game at the John Labbatt Centre in London, Ontario! First star honours would go to Team Cherry winger Marc-Olivier Mimar (Acadie-Bathurst Titan), who scored a hat trick. Second star would go to Team Davidson center Sebastien Svendsen (Prince Albert Raiders), who scored two goals. Third star would go to Team Davidson center Tomas Filippi (Quebec Remparts), who recorded two assists.

IceDogs winger Gabriel Landeskog played 13:17, recorded an assist, was Even, and had a shot on goal, and two hits, helping Team Davidson to the victory.

Mark Visentin stopped only 11 of the 15 shots he faced before being pulled in favor of Dalton McGrath, who stopped all 15 shots he faced the rest of the way, and Kingston scored the first four goals of the game, but though Niagara made a valiant third period comeback attempt, their effort fell just short!

April 17th



Saginaw vs. Windsor, Game 1

Windsor defeat Saginaw 2-0! First star honours would go to Windsor Spitfires goaltender Jack Campbell, who posted a 22 save shutout. Second star would go to Saginaw Spirit goaltender Tadeas Galansky, who stopped 26 of 28 shots in the loss. Third star would go to Windsor Spitfires defenseman Ryan Ellis, who recorded an assist.

The Windsor Spitfires lead the series 1-0!

April 18th

With the IceDogs out of the playoffs, they begin to shed players to prepare their roster for next season.

The IceDogs release their three overage players:

D Tim Billingsley
LW Jason Wilson

LW Darren Archibald is on loan to the Vancouver Canucks, and will leave the IceDogs when the loan finishes.

The following have also been released:

G Dalton McGrath
LW Johnson Andrews
RW Michael Hasson

These players will be overage next season, but will be playing elsewhere.

The three overagers left on the roster for next season are: D Mike Schwindt, D Simon Gronvaldt, and C Alex Friesen.
