Ice hockey... how did this happen?

Post by Tasku »

I got thinking the other day at work (very boring job, eight hours to think about stuff, while my body automatically does all the work :) ), how did I get to like ice hockey? I went back on memory lane, and remembered, it all started from EA Sports NHL Hockey, on Sega Mega Drive. I was about ten years old, I guess, and walked home from school, with my best friend. We noticed my bro had borrowed this NHL Hockey from a friend of his and, though we didn't care for any sports bäck then we had a blast playing it!

Next time I saw an icehockey game on the telly, I picked the team with cooler outfit and desided, I was a fan. 8)

How did you guys get to like hockey?

About six years ago, I saw a sports show during a boring Saturday afternoon. I watched it for the football highlights but then they went into the hockey highlights. I saw the highlights for the Leafs v Habs game. It was awesome with one team going ahead and the other tying it up. I was hooked and so I decided to record the live games and watch them the ne day.
Also, there was a demo of NHL 99 on a magazine CD. I thought it was great fun and got the full version. That was a cracking game - I've still got it somewhere. :)

Same sorta thing for me too.

Played NHL'98 to a band-wagon when it came out. After a 5 years, I finally found out Channel 5 show some games live. 2003-2004 was my first full season of ice hockey action, looking for more!

Saw my first NHL Game on TV in 87'..(long time ago) , Devils vs. Capitals 6:5, it was awesome. NHL Fan since then. Bethesta then made a Hockey Manager for Wayne Gretzky Hockey on Amiga and Sega came up with NHL Hockey on Megadrive...these were the ultimate first steps in hockey. And since 1998 i'm playing with friends of mine every wednesday in winter. But only cruel Novice-hockey :(

I used to follow the old BISL in the mid 90's when it was a far better league, but when Sky stopped showing it I lost interest. Then I bought NHL 2000 for a laugh, and within a week I was videoing NHL games of C5 and by the 2001 playoffs was a dedicated hardcore viewer who stayed up until stupid times watching hockey. Now I hand out £10 a month throughout the year to NASN just to watch hockey, which is fair enough, and seeing as I enjoy baseball too it's a good deal.

I follow the Leafs as I have a load of relations on both sides of my family from Toronto and the surrounding area, so it just seemed natural to follow them seeing as I have some sort of link with the place unlike any of the other cities in the NHL

My first glimpse of hockey was during the sportsvacation (yes, we have that in Sweden! ) Back in 1979, when the Swedish Championships final was shown on TV (Björklöven lost to Färjestad). Been following hockey ever since both on TV (NHL) and IRL my local team Vallentuna.

Computerwise it started in 1993 when i got a german Managementsim called Eishockey Manager. Kept the amiga until 2 weeks ago just to play that game from time to time. :D

My dad was a hockey player (a naff one though) and he was attending the games after his "career" was over. I can't remember how old was I, when he had taken me to my first game, but my first memory of my love to hockey is a photo of my birthday celebration (I was four or five I think), where I'm posing in hockey equipment. So I can safely say, I'm a hockey fan since my birth :)

Born in hockey-mad Toronto, Canada. Enough said, right? I'm not sure I'd be as big a fan if I had found hockey after all the rule changes have strangled things, thanks to Bettman and co.

In Toronto? And you're fan of the Canadians? :?

I was 13, I tink, and I recieved NHL '99 (EA Sports, PC) from my dad's best friend. I asked him if he could get me FIFA '99 for my new PC and he gave me both games. I played only FIFA until I got bored and looked at NHL. Hmm, let's try this :-D. After installing it "Cool, Check those grafix " one hour later I was addicted.

I was always playing the Flyers because the only player that I knew whas the guy from the cover (number 88 but... I didn't know his name :))

I think that NHL and CM (maybe also Starcraft or FIFA) are the games that I played the most. So EHM is between NHL and CM

I think that my Dad is the root of my hockey passion, as I can remember watching Hockey Night in Canada sitting on his lap and pleading to stay up a little later to my mom.

When I was a teenager, Edmonton had their glory days with Gretzky, Kurri, Messier etc etc etc etc... the list goes on, so it is kind of a civic pride thing as well.

I still love watching games, but I hate how it has become such a 'business', both for the players and for the owners.

Maybe we'll see you in EHM 2007 as you turn pro? :-D

Are you aiming for a pro career, or is it only a hobby?

Next year I will get a first team contract in Helsingborg Redskins. They play in Div 2 in Sweden. My goal is to play in Allsvenskan or Div 1. So if i come to allsvenskan, I will be in EHM :)

Cool indeed!

I actually have a friends friend in the game already... we used the "browse" function and found him somewhere in the lower leagues.

He had good determination, but no skill whatsoever :-D

Have you seen Fabian Brunnström? he will become a player of Elitserien. I promise you that. Next year he will play in allsvenskan. He scored 2 goals and 2 assist in fridays and he is only 19 years old!
