Panthers on the Prowl
So I've decided to take the Florida Panthers. My ground rules will be to follow the path a rebuilding team would take in keeping most prospects and supporting them with a few veterans. I will also try to acquire picks while not getting a ridiculous amount either. If trades that come up where the I can get a star player, I will try to make it either fair or at the very least probable that the other team would take it. I can offer as much as I want however because I make my decisions, not the UI. There may be a few lopsided trade, they do happen in the NHL but only if it is something that could happen (Anyone remember the Lindros trade or any New York Islanders trades. While we laughed at the Kessel trade, Burke is reaping the rewards now. A trade like that might slip through but I'll explain my side). There will be a few familiar faces as I enjoyed their play for me last time. I also need to conform to the cap, which will be hard as I'll start way below the floor.
Here we go:
Aug 31st: GM Cloutier takes control of the Florida Panthers. He has begun by letting go his coach stating he would like to have his own man behind the bench. Several offers were made to free agents in hopes of bolstering the roster.
Sept 3rd: Florida fans, who a few days before stated they were unimpressed with the GM change, were given reasons why GM Cloutier was appointed. Wayne Primeau (3yrs @ $570,000) and Brad Richards (3yrs @ $2,820,000) were signed today.
“Richards is a fantastic center who will be able to bring out the best in our young wingers. While Richards will pilot our first line Primeau will be there to ensure we have a solid fourth line to shut down our opposition.”
Sept 4th: Florida continued to add to its roster by adding Zigmund Palffy (2 yrs @ $865,000).
“We have a lot of young players that are not yet ready to play full time in the NHL and signing a veteran winger to a short term deal allows to fill that gap temporarily.”
Three more players were added to the roster today. It is guessed that there will be some other players leaving soon to make space. Nick Boynton (3yrs @ $1,280,000), Brandon Dubinsky (2yrs @ $984,000), and Jason Williams (3yrs @ $1,130,000) were signed.
“Boyton adds some muscle to our blueline, making it hard for the opposition to make it to our net. Dubinsky is solid and young which will allow him to be part of our growing roster. Williams will come in to provide depth.”
Sept 5th: Nikolai Zherdev (2yrs @ $900,000) and Blake Wheeler (1yr @ $984,000) were signed.
“Zherdev is very enigmatic winger who has unbelievable potential but has failed to live up to it. Hopefully we'll be able to get that out of him. Wheeler will be able to provide even more depth and also has a great upside.”
Sept 14th: Kevin Constatine was named the new head coach of Florida.
Sept 15th: Florida beat Phoenix 4-3 in a preseason exhibition game.
Sept 17th: “The season fast approaches and I have yet to be able to resolve my problem of not having a true starter in nets. Theodore, Turco, Elliott, and Giguere all signed elsewhere even with my offers.”
Sept 19th: The Hockey News ranked the Florida Panthers 29th on their website. Detroit, Vancouver, and Washington were the top 3.
Sept 20th: Florida beat St Louis 3-1 in a preseason exhibition game.
Sept 24th: Florida lost 6-5 against Columbus.
Sept 26th: Florida conducted two trades today. The first clearly had the future in mind as the Panthers sent Tomas Kopecky, Tim Kennedy, and the rights to John McFarland to the Islanders for Al Montoya and the rights to Kirill Kabonov and Nino Niederreiter.
“Recent additions on the right wing made Kopecky expendable while Kennedy was a depth player at most. McFarland had upside but we felt what we were getting in exchange far outweighed it. Montoya has potential to be a starter or a very solid backup. In Kabonov and Niederreiter we have wingers that will lead our team in the future.”
Also, Florida sent the rights to Vincent Trochek to Anaheim for Francois Beauchemin.
“Trochek is a very valuable prospect but sometimes that is the cost to add a talent like Beauchemin who will form a powerful blueline duo with Campbell.”
Sept 30th: In an effort to add a talented goaltender, Florida claimed Evgeni Nabokov off waivers.
“Nabokov is a solid veteran who will allow us to compete night in and night out.”
In other news, no Florida Panthers players were named to The Fourth Periods' top ten lists posted on their website.

Re: Panthers on the Prowl
Jan 2nd: K. McArdle (2yrs @ $550,000), J. Garrison (2yrs @ $750,000), and F. Beauchemin (3yrs @ $4,220,000) were signed to contract extensions.
Loss. Florida lost to Pittsburgh 5-1. D. Roloson made 32 saves.
Jan 4th: K. Ellerby (1yr @$875,000), S. Clemmensen (3yrs @ $1,400,000) and D. Kulikov (3yrs @ $1,400,000) were signed to extensions.
Florida finally managed to make a trade that improved their blueline. The Panthers sent Nick Boynton, and the rights to Alex Petrovic, Rocco Grimaldi, and Jonathan Racine for Chris Pronger.
“Boynton had been great for us but we felt we needed to upgrade our defense and it was the best suited package for us. As for the prospect it was felt that they were not really going to improve our roster in the future. In Pronger we get a leader and a sure talent that will give us the extra edge we need to be a playoff team.”
Win. Florida was the better team as they beat Phoenix 5-3. D. Roloson made 19 saves. Campbell was first star with a goal and an assist.
Jan 6th: Win. The Panthers won against the Islanders 5-1. Roloson made 18 saves. Pronger scored a goal and was first star.
The Panthers board mentioned they were pleased with the game.
Jan 7th: Repik (2yrs @ $850,000) was signed to an extension.
Jan 9th: Win. The Panthers were the victor against the Maple Leafs 3-1. Roloson made 30 saves while Wheeler was first star with a goal and two assists.
Jan 11th: E. Nabokov is still undefeated against his old team as Tampa Bay beat Florida 4-3 in overtime. S. Clemmensen made 26 saves in his return. N. Zherdev was first star with 1 goal and 2 assists.
Jan 13th: Win. Florida was victorious against Carolina by a score of 3-1. S. Clemmensen made 33 saves while B. Dubinsky was named first star, having scored a goal. Zherdev was injured and will likely miss a couple of games. The same goes for F. Beauchemin.
Jan 15th: Montoya (2yrs @ $750,000) signed a contract extension.
Jan 16th: Loss. Again Tampa Bay was the winner against Florida, this time by a score of 3-1. S. Clemmenson, who this time faced J. Theodore, made 28 saves.
Jan 18th: Win. Florida beats Winnipeg 5-2. S. Clemmensen made 24 saves and B. Richards had a hat trick to be the first star.
Jan 20th: Win. Washington was beaten 5-1 by Florida. S. Clemmensen faced 25 shots, blocking 24 of them. 2 goals was good to get Pronger the first star.
Jan 23rd: Florida made a minor trade today sending a 7th round pick to Los Angeles for Kevin Westgarth.
“Westgarth is a tough player who bulks up our team with his 6' 4”, 244 pound frame. We were dissatisfied with Mark Cullen's play of late and will be looking to move him. As for the pick, we feel that this will be a rather weak draft and felt we were getting more than its worth.”
M. Cullen was sent down to the ECHL and placed on waivers.
Jan 24th: The Panthers made another trade with the Oilers, this time sending a 3rd and 6th round pick for Eric Goddard.
“Same as with the Westgarth move we felt that adding muscle to our fourth line would make us harder to play against. Goddard is also 6' 4” but is 224 pounds.”
Jan 26th: Win. Florida won 3-2 against Winnipeg. S. Clemmensen made 28 saves, Zubrus (2 goals) was first star, and Westgarth (17 PIM) did exactly what was expected.
Jan 27th: Win. Last place Winnipeg lost again to Florida by a score of 5-3. S. Clemmensen made 22 saves. Zherdev made 1 goal and 2 assists.
Jan 28th: G. Wilson was named OHL Player of the Week.
Jan 30th: Loss. Florida lost 4-1 to Toronto. S. Clemmensen made 24 saves.

Re: Panthers on the Prowl
Feb 1st: M. Cheverie was named AHL Player and Rookie of the Month. M. Cullen was named ECHL Player and Performer of the Month.
Loss. The Panthers lost against the first place Capitals by a score of 3-2. S. Clemmensen made 32 saves.
In other news, Pronger was the only player named to the Eastern All-Star team.
Feb 3rd: Win. Florida beat out Boston 3-1. S. Clemmensen stopped 27 of 28 shots and was named first star. B. Wheeler was injured but is not expected to miss any action.
Feb 6th: Loss. The Montreal Canadiens won 3-1 against the Florida Panthers. S. Clemmensen faced 43 shots and blocked 41 of them. The last goal against was an empty-netter.
Feb 8th: Having joined a bidding war with other teams, Florida won when they acquired Mike Richards in exchange for Stephen Weiss, Jack Skille, and a 4th round pick.
“We had been hugging the cap floor a little too closely still and this was a great opportunity to add a very high calibre player. In Richards we have a player that does everything Weiss did but better. Skille did not have the upside we were looking for. We've decided that with our 8th place spot rather tenuous that we needed to be buyers. We'll be looking to secure one more dman to bolster the blueline.”
Loss. Florida lost to Boston by the score of 3-1. S. Clemmensen made 26 saves and M. Richards scored the only goal.
Feb 13th: Win. Los Angeles lost to 5-1 against Florida. D. Roloson made 25 saves and M. Richards scored 2 goals to be first star.
Feb 15th: In a baffling trade Philadelphia departed itself from Sean Couturier to Florida for a pair of 5th round picks.
“We had made an offer including a player but Philly countered with this deal. Couturier will in the future compose a powerful pair with Hall.”
Loss. The Panthers lost to the Rangers 4-1. D. Roloson made 32 saves. B. Richards scored the only goal for Florida.
Feb 17th: Win. Florida was the victor against Montreal 2-1 in overtime. S. Clemmensen made 21 saves. Wheeler was first star with 2 goals.
Feb 20th: Loss. Florida was defeated 5-4 in a shootout against Carolina. S. Clemmensen made 27 saves.
Feb 22nd: Florida finally got their man but it was rather costly. Joni Pitkanen came from Carolina in return for the rights to Kirill Kabonov, Michael Caruso, and a 2nd round pick.
“While the price was rather steep, we knew we had to take action. Pitkanen is a grade-A talent and we felt he could solidify our blueline for years to come. Kulikov was the key part for Carolina and we were sad to see him go but our scouts projected he was more likely to be at best a second liner. This move puts Ference in the press box and given his play will likely be the last player moved before the dealine.”
Win. Florida celebrated the trade with a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. S. Clemmensen made 19 saves. B. Richards was first star with an assist.
Feb 24th: Florida made a trade with seemingly their favorite trade partners, the Edmonton Oilers, sending Andrew Ference for a 6th round pick.
“In was a roster move just to clear space. Ference had been extremely disappointing for us and we felt that a 6th round pick had more upside.”
Win. The Panthers won, inching them closer to the 7th place Rangers. It was by a score of 4-1 that Florida handed Carolina a loss. S. Clemmensen made 21 saves and Booth was first star scoring a pair of goals and getting an assist.
Feb 27th: Win. Florida shutout Ottawa 6-0 in a very one-sided game. S. Clemmensen 22 saves and D. Booth was first star with 3 assists.
Feb 28th: Win. Ottawa was defeated 5-3 by Florida. S. Clemmensen made 22 saves and M. Richards got a goal and an assist to be first star.

Re: Panthers on the Prowl
Mar 2nd: The board announced it was extremely pleased with GM Cloutier's work but were worried that the team spent most of the season under the cap, a place they are still currently, even with all their acquisitions.
Win. Florida won another one, beating 3-2 Pittsburgh. S. Clemmensen blocked 25 of 27 shots. Westgarth scored a goal and was the first star.
Mar 4th: Win. Florida won 2-1 against Carolina. S. Clemmensen made 19 saves.
Mar 9th: Win. Winnipeg was defeated by Florida 2-1. S. Clemmensen blocked 27 shots. Richards was first star with 1 goal.
Mar 11th: Loss. Florida lost 6-1 to the Rangers. S. Clemmensen was in for all goals making 36 saves. D. Zubrus scored the only goal.
Mar 12th: A local Florida sports show got a few moments of GM Cloutier's time for their show 5 Questions:
A lot of changes have come about since you have arrived. Would you say you're making too many moves?
“I don't believe so. I mean, as a new GM come in he will very often mold the team to his ambitions and his style. You can take Brian Burke as an example. I had to make a winner out of an incomplete roster. I spent most of my time not even reaching the cap floor with all my acquisition. This summer will see a couple more moves as I conform to the cap.”
What is your goal, your style?
“I want to ice a young team with an offensive kick. We added plenty of player to our roster that fit that bill as well as veterans to mentor and add stability. I worked to get a team that was young and added plenty of growth potential.”
You speak of youth yet you traded away a lot of prospects and draft picks. Does that not go against what you just said?
“Not really. I traded prospects that I felt did not fit within our goals. Except for Pronger, most of the players we got in exchange are still young. I mean we traded to get Taylor Hall and Sean Couturier which will be stars in the future. We also added Joni Pitkanen, 28, and Mike Richards, 27, who are veterans but still under 30. Of course we added veterans but you have to surround your youth with the right experience so that they may grow.”
You only have five picks for this draft. If you are building for the future, isn't that a low number?
“Generally yes. But we are sort of following a hybrid style. We are building for the future by adding players that are young and will remain with us for years. A draft pick is useful but it is a gamble. Using a draft pick or untested prospect to get a sure talent for year to come seems like a more reasonable move to me.”
What more can we expect from you between now and next season?
“Playoffs, the draft, and free agency. The first two will be new for me. It'll be excited times. Of course we are going step by step. First qualify for the playoffs. Then we'll work on going as far as we can. At draft we'll look at our future needs but also the best player available. With free agency we'll focus on what we were missing this season and in the playoffs. We'll be reevaluating our roster once we are done the playoffs.”

Re: Panthers on the Prowl
July 3rd: Florida traded Danius Zubrus to Vancouver for Anthony Stewart.
“We felt that we could use Zubrus' salary could be used to bolster our first two lines rather than sit on the third line. In Stewart we get someone that will do just as well on the third.”
July 8th: Florida continues to have troubles signing free agents as Jovanovski, Hedjuk, and Doan all went to other teams.
July 12th: In an effort to better their bluline, Florida traded Francois Beauchemin and the rights to Jakub Sedlacek (5th round pick last draft) for to Carolina for Keith Ballard.
“In Ballard we get someone younger who we feel will have a better offensive upside. While we had to give up a prospect it was someone we drafted late.”
July 31st: So far July has been fruitless in adding a capable 7th defenseman.

Re: Panthers on the Prowl
Aug 3rd: With several teams shopping players in hopes of getting under the cap even before training camp, Florida went out and made a pair of deals to really add to their defense. First the Panthers made a deal with the Rangers sending a 4th round pick for Rob Scuderi.
“Scuderi will make our defense harder to play against. He is big and very defensive minded. Our PK will benefit too.”
After that Florida dealt with Chicago sending Marc Cheverie and a 3rd round pick for Steve Montador.
“Montador will have assignments much like those of Scuderi. It will be to shut down powerful offenses. He will take a lot of weight off of Pronger.”
Aug 24th: GM Cloutier angered fans and the board today as he announced a trade that filled his desire for a first line right wing that he could not do through free agency. The Panthers sent Brandon Dubinsky, Steve Montador, and the rights to Nick Ebert to the Blackhawks for Patrick Kane.
“Chicago had come to us and inquired about Dubinsky. We countered with the current deal. This trade allowed us to strengthen our first line and open a spot on our second line for Hall. Montador was added to the deal for financial reasons and because we felt that it would remove ice time from Kulikov. Garrison will be able to fill the 7th defenseman role very well.”
Aug 31st: Here is the pre-season edition of 5 questions:
What are your thoughts on last season?
“Last season made me proud. I mean I was really working on learning the job and the team really worked hard. We spent a long time under the salary cap floor. Our defense was ever evolving but worked hard to pull through. Players such as Garrison, Zherdev, and Wheeler were asked to step into roles that really pushed their limits but they never backed down. Clemmensen did everything but score for us, a true starter.”
Are you disappointed you did not win the cup?
“You always want to win the cup. You also have to be able to look in the mirror and know what you can and can't do. We were not a Stanley Cup team last year. No one expected us to be. Seeing the team beat our bitter state rivals was more than I could have asked for. We did all that with Pronger injured.”
What about this year, are you a Cup winning team?
“We'll challenge, that one is certain. Hard to say before training camp has even started how the team will gel. I know I can count on the familiar faces to pull through.”
As per your habit, there were a lot of moves done since last season. Is there still more to come?
“I doubt there will be much more. We could use a good right wing prospect and maybe another defenseman off of waivers just in case but nothing major. I feel that there are not really any holes. We've managed to fill those rather well I think.”
Where do you see your team at the end of the season?
“Having steadily improved and within the top 5 in the east.”
