Montreal Canadiens: Challenge 3.2 Chat Thread
So I started my second season of this challenge. For the most part, my team stayed as it was leaving training cap (see page 6 of this topic for my lineup). Things weren't really clicking for the first few games. I was really scratching my head as to what I should do to get this team going. After 5 games, I got a lucky break. I checked my news for the day and saw that New Jersey had put Scott Gomez up on waivers. Despite his $4.5M per season contract, I was sure someone else would grab him but I decided to take a shot anyhow. Low and behold, a couple days later, I got him! Now Jeff Carter had been doing okay as the team's top line center but his line just wasn't carrying the team like it should be able to. I decided he was my best candidate to take the trip down to the farm team. he's still young and he could use the development. He had 5 points in 5 games with Montreal and now he's got 20 points in 14 games with Hamilton. Not too shabby! Gomez has done great for us. He's got 19 points in 15 games. His two wingers are the team's top 2 in points. Now the team is really clicking.
The only things I really think I need to work on are special teams. Both my PP and PK are weak. This could cost me come playoff time! My PP is running at 14.3% and my PK is only 78.7%. I've really got to correct this.

Good luck with your finals, timmy_t. Going back to school after being out for so many years is tough. I'm still trying to convince myself to do it.
I just wrapped up my second set of 20 games in my second season. I haven't made any trades or waiver claims in this stretch. I've been liking the way my team is playing. The one problem is that I'm exactly at the cap/budget max. I've only got 20 guys on my roster and if one gets injured, I can't bring up a replacement without going over (at least in the one instance I've tried). I'm probably going to have to make a deal soon to ship out some salary.
I sent Milan Michalek down to my farm team. He was really having a tough time on the 4th line. I'm thinking he needs icetime more than anything else. He's just not going to get it with the big team right now. I brought up Sean Bergenheim from the farm team to replace him. He's a great skater with nice stamina and he had been doing very well with Hamilton so far this season.
In game #35 of the season, I lost Stephane Veilleux to a MCL sprain. He'll be out for a month or so. He's already missed 5 games. He had been doing horrible on the 4th line anyhow. He had a decent run on the 2nd line last season but Saprykin beat him out for that spot. Veilleux doesn't have the defensive abilities to warrant a spot on my 3rd line, that's why I signed Axelsson in the offseason. So Veilleux ends up on the 4th line. I might have to ship him out too, once he's healthy.
My line of Cole, Gomez, and Kovalev is still doing great. Even though Gomez and Kovalev each taking up $4.5M of cap space, I wouldn't dream of dealing either of them. Theodore is doing a great job but I'd love to be able to drop his $4.5M per season. I've been trying to get Lundqvist from the Rangers but they won't part with him. They're wasting him though. He's only gotten 4 starts this season, with Weekes getting the other 33 (they haven't played as many games as us yet). But they still won't deal him. They're also close to the salary cap, so if I want to send them Theodore and take Lundqvist, I'll also have to take some other salary off their hands. I might have to look in a different direction. I'm also thinking I might have to deal away Brian Rolston by the deadline. He's doing a decent job but he's making $2.4M. I could use a defensive center for my checking line that makes a lot less. I've been trying to land Halpern from the Caps but so far it's not happening.
Let's see what happens in the next 20.

Well I just wrapped up my 3rd segment (games 41-60) of the second season of the challenge. I finally made my first trades since early in the season. I've been satisfied with my forward lines but defense hasn't been the strongest on the right side. The first deal I made was to send Mathieu Dandenault and the rights to Jon Gleed to the Blackhawks for Brent Seabrook. Dandenault has great speed but he just never really did it for me. He didn't have the offensive abilities to go with that speed. Seabrook isn't as good defensively but he brings nice passing and shooting while making my team a bit younger and giving me cap space.
Next, I tried to trade Zyuzin and a prospect (or a pick) to the Caps for Eminger but they wouldn't take it. They decided to negotiate and offered me Eminger and a 3rd for the rights to Mathieu Aubin and the rights to Kael Mouillierat. Neither of these prospects looked like they were going to do all that much for me. While my scouts had been hot for Mouillierat before, they had cooled off lately. Emiger gives me great speed, low salary cost, and the ability to dump Zyuzin. I haven't been all that impressed with Zyuzin lately, and wanted to ship him out. Now all I have to do is find a taker.
I might still make another trade or two. I'm not really sure if I'll be able to. I'd love to drop some salary. I missed out on being able to sign a couple of great UFAs for cheap because my board wouldn't let me (becuase I was so close to the cap). The Capitals ended up signing Olli Jokinen for $850k per season (2 years) about 5 games ago. Edmonton was able to nab Brad Richards 8 games ago for the bargain price of $1.3M per for 2 years. I tried getting each of these guys during the offseason but my board wouldn't let me offer more than the league minimum. Same goes for Sergei Samsonov but he eventually ended up signing for Lokomotiv, whoever they are. I'm sure he'll jump at the chance to come back to the NHL next season.
My team's performance has stayed pretty consistant. My special teams are still pretty pathetic. I had some injury troubles for a while. I was down to 3 lines for a bit. My most noteworthy loss was Cole. I lost him for 6 games to a chest injury. He was eager to come back though. In his first game after the injury, he had a hat trick.
We'll see what happens in the last chunk of games!

I just wrapped up the last block of games for season 2. I figured I'd give an update here before moving on to the playoffs.
I made 2 trades before the deadline. The first was to send Brian Rolston and Maxim Lapierre to the Flames for Anze Kopitar, their 2nd round pick in 2007, and their 3rd in 2008. I wanted to dump Rolston's salary and Lapierre wasn't developing much. I got Kopitar, who is a pretty good prospect, and I also got a couple of decent picks. This helped lower my team salary most of all.
I also dumped some more salary in my other deal. I sent Andrei Zyuzin to the Penguins for their 2nd round pick in 2007. Zyuzin was only making $1.2M per season but I didn't think he was good enought to justify that much. Anyhow, he would've just been riding the pine for me.
Over the last stretch of game, my top line really turned it on. Cole, Gomez, and Kovalev put up some nice numbers to guide the team into the playoffs on a strong note. The second line worries me a bit though. They just don't seem as strong. I'm guessing one of the three players on that line is just a bad fit. I'm leaning towards dealing away Saprykin and keeping Weiss and Kobasew next season. Maybe I'll move Wiess to LW and plug Carter in at center on this line? Another key to my team's success in the final stretch was Brent Seabrook. This kid fits my team beautifully! He had 23 points in 25 games with us. 15 of those points came on the PP! As a result, my team's PP improved by 6% for the quarter. My PK still needs work though.
After Rolston was dealt away, I moved Begin up the the 3rd line center slot. He's an excellent faceoff man with good checking and nice speed. Jeff Carter got recalled from the farm team and put in on the fourth line between Veilleux and Bergenheim.
I wrapped up the regular season as the President's Trophy winner with the most points in the league. None of my players came even close to leading the league in points. Vincent Lecavalier ran away with that one! He had 55 goals and 95 assists for 150 points! The Lightning were a 1 line team this year though. They really don't have any scoring beyond the Modin-Lecavalier-St Louis line. As for my guys, Gomez came in 13th overall with 108 points (he had 106 of those points with me. the other 2 came in his 4 games with NJ before they waived him). Gomez was 4th in the league for assists. Cole came in 15th overall with 51 goals and 55 assists for 106 points in 76 games. Kovalev was 17th overall with 54 goals and 50 assists for 104 points in 82 games. Kovalev was 8th overall in goals and Cole was 11th. The league had 13 players reach the 50 goal mark this season. We had two of them! 4 of those 13 players actualled topped 60 goals! Ohlund was 9th among defensemen in the leauge with 66 points in 80 games. Theodore was one of the league's top goaltenders again. He was 5th in GAA (2.69) and SV% (0.913), and 3rd in wins (43). He only had 1 shutout this season.
So that wraps up a pretty good second season under my management. We're facing my real life hometeam, the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs. I'm sure we'll make short work of them. They don't have a very deep team. Anyhow, I'll come back and update once I finish the playoffs.

Should have done this earlier I guess
but I've moved your second season posts to a thread for the second season.
We will be recording for a second season again for this Challenge so any time people finish they can go on to thier next season, just check out the Announce Thread about Second Seasons for details on what you need to do. You can also record your second season (3.2) stats to recording as soon as you have them.
We are transitioning to the next version of GLR's recording system and we have to get our info transfered over first. We won't open a 3.2 page until we do so at the new system. It shouldn't be long now as Calv has been doing a great job pulling it together

Heh. The first time I actually did it to taunt the guys who "forced" me to put some Canadian teams into the voting mix, and generally antagonize the TBL Canucks among us as they all know I'm from the US.Systemfel wrote:Still can't spell 'Canadiens', eh, Minstrel?

Okay, I've wrapped up my postseason so I figured I'd pop back in and give an update before I moved on to the draft and offseason.
As I said in my last post, I drew the Boston Bruins (my personal favorite team) in the first round. I thought the Bruins might've been a cake walk since they were mostly a 1 line team. Thornton's line was pretty good in the regular season but Bergeron didn't have any talent with him on the second line. Despite this, they still managed to make things difficult for me in the first round. They kept every game pretty close (all 1 goal games except for game 2) even though they lost the series 4-1.
In the second round we faced the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa had the Flyers in the first round and it took them all 7 games to get past them. I honestly expected these guys to be very difficult and possibly even take me out. This ended up being my easiest series of the playoffs. They took game 1 from us by a score of 4-2 but we won the next 4 straight to win the series 4-1. We even had a shutout in game 3 (a score of 3-0).
We drew the Florida Panthers in the Conference Finals. They had taken out the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round (won the series 4-3) and swept the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. Up until this point, we were fairly healthy in the playoffs. This is when trouble started for us. It seemed like I was always losing a guy for a game or two because they finished the last game too banged up. I lost Gomez and Ohlund each for a couple of games. I also lost PJ Axelsson for 12 days due to a skate bite he got in practice in between the 2nd and 3rd games of the series. The Panthers took the first to games of this series, shutting us out at our home area in both of these games (1-0 and 5-0 scores). We came back and won the next two games on the road to even the series. The rest of the series went back in forth with the home team winning each game. We finally took game 7 at home by a score of 5-3 to win the series and move on to the Stanley Cup Finals.
In the Stanley Cup Finals I had to face the Calgary Flames. The Flames were the top ranked team in the West during the regular season. This Stanley Cup Finals was truly a matchup of the league's best two teams for the season. We got Axelsson back in time for the Finals but we also lost guys like Gomez, Ohlund, and Cole for a game or two in this round. The was another close series, with the wins going back and forth the whole way through. It was tit for tat the whole way. Fortunately, we were able to walk away with the win (in OT no less) in game 7 and win the Stanley Cup!!!!!
Erik Cole lead the league in points for the playoffs.

For a while there, I didn't think we were going to pull it off but my guys always gave just enough to move on.
Oddly enough, when the awards for the season came around, Kovalev wound up with the Conn Smythe, not Cole. In fact, Cole wasn't even one of the runners up. Jeff Carter and Brent Seabrook were the runners up. I'm guessing the formula that decides the awards must take # of game in to account. I really have no idea because this is nothing like how the scoring worked out. It's strange.
Other than that, we didn't win any other awards. Theodore came in third in Vezina voting. Raycroft won it. Theodore also came in third in the Crozier voting. Kiprusoff took that one. Nobody got voted on to the first or second All-Star teams. I guess this is a case of the sum being better than the whole. Whatever. We won The Cup!
I'll check back in after the draft. I don't know if I'll play next season but I've got to see how the draft plays out. It's one of my favorite parts of the game.

So the 2007 draft rolled around and no matter what I threw at them, Columbus wouldn't part with the #1 overall pick. Of course, they took Angelo Esposito (as I would've). I didn't have my first pick until #30 overall, the last of the first round. By the time that pick rolled around all the really impressive players were taken. Even some of the guys I thought I could get in the 2nd round were taken before #30 overall came around. I ended up sending my 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd (I had 4 2nds and 2 3rds in this draft) to the Oilers for Tyson Sexsmith. The Oilers had taken Sexsmith with the #17 overall pick. He's a great goaltending prospect who my scouts say could be a better version of Rick Dipietro. He had a good year in Spokane with a record of 31-21-11, a GAA of 2.20, and a SV% of 0.929 not to mention getting selected to Team Cherry and the CHL Rookie All-Star Team. I wanted to start developing a goaltender. Theodore costs way too much against the cap.
With my first pick of the second round (#51 overall), I took LD Keith Aulie. He's projected to be a 1-2 defenseman and possibly a more talented version of Vaananen. He's a huge defenseman that can also skate. What's not to like? He's all defense though. He doesn't really have an offensive upside. I also had the #52 overall pick. I chose Pavel Polak, another LD. He's not much of a skater yet but he's a MEAN SOB! He's got a 20 aggression rating. He's got all A's (+'s and -'s in the mix) on his report card except for a B+ on puckhandling and a C on hockey sense. My last pick of the 2nd round rolled around at #59 overall. I took Slovakian LW Tomas Striz. I drafted this guy in my Carolina game and he seemed to be developing nicely. I figured I should give him a shot again. In this game my scouts compare him to Gaborik. In my other game he was compared to Bertuzzi. All of these guys were ranked around 100ish but I figured with the way the draft had been going, I'd better get them while I could.
In the 3rd round I grabbed LW/C Andrew Glass. He's another MEAN SOB. His physical and mental attributes are already looking good. Hitting is his only technical ability that's developed right now. He's projected to be like Erik Cole but with a smaller frame. Not too shabby! His report card is all A's except for B's in Poise and Puckhandling. He's playing for an NCAA team so I may have to consider signing him and sending him to Canadian Junior. He was drafted by Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL. I could send him down there.
I took another defenseman in the 4th round. I picked RD/LD Nigel Williams at #120 overall. He's 19 years old but he look like a pretty good 2-way defenseman for the 4th round. In the 5th round I kept with picking defense. I took Czech RD Ludik Cech. My scouts say he'll probably be a depth player but they compare him to Ruslan Salei. He's another 19 year old. Right now his strengths are his checking, hitting, and strength.
When 6th round pick came up, I wasn't seeing much there that I wanted. I started looking at who had been picked and saw that one of my sleepers had been picked up by the Penguins in the 4th round. I went to trade for him and saw that they didn't think much of him. I offered my 6th round pick for him and they accepted! I got 20 year old Russian RW Mikhail Savelyev for that 6th rounder. He's a skill player with great skating and conditioning. He's also got 20's in both passing and deking. Throw in a 19 in determination and I think he's a steal!
My 7th round pick was the last in the draft. The NHL calls it Mr Irrelevant. I went with a 17 year old LW named Travis Dunstall. He's a good skater with decent mental abilities (including a 20 in anticipation) but several weak technical abilities. 8 of his 12 technical abilities are single digits. The others are all high. He's got a 20 in stickhandling, 16's in passing and deking, and a 15 in pokecheck. He's a longshot but I figure he's worth a 7th round pick.
Despite being under the cap (I've been allowed the full cap for a budget) by $2.5M, I wasn't allowed to offer an UFAs anything more than $850k per season. So needless to say, I didn't sign anyone. My board did mention that the thought that Stephane Veilleux didn't belond on the team. I guess they figured somebody on the farm was better than him and ready to come up. I'd guess I agree. I ended up sending him to the Bluejackets for Dan Lacosta (21 year old goaltending prospect) and their 3rd round pick in the next draft. I still haven't decided who I'm going to call up. I immediately sent him down to Hamilton.
I signed some of my prospects to rookie deals and send them to my AHL affiliates (one or two were sent to the ECHL instead). Matt D'Agostini, Zach Jones, Mikhail Savelyev, Cody Bass, and Ryan Bender were all sign and resassinged. Since my AHL affiliate is shared with the Oilers, I'll have to keep an eye on things and see if these guys are getting icetime.
So that wraps things up. Despite the fact that I was running the hated Montreal Canadiens, I had fun with it. I'll keep this save for a while in case I ever want to go back and play it but I think I'll move on to something else. Maybe I'll pick up my Hurricanes game again (season 4)? I've also been contemplating taking a team and working towards an all US born roster. That would be a challenge!

I have a very boring job! For about 7 or 8 months of the year I have hardly anything to do but I still have to sit here all day long. During that time, I play EHM. That's why I love the challenges. It gives me an objective. The long writeups go along with it. I have the time, so why not? I'm glad you're enjoying them, inSTALLed.
As for the all US born roster I mentioned at the end of my last post... that's going to be much harder than I thought.

I've just got to game #60 and I'm not sure if it's wise to report my games at all. I've been losing all the time and have been wondering why the board doesn't fire me. In the middle of the losses I happened to win St. Louis, which has been doing as poorly as me (both #15 in own conferences) and my board was pleased to the win. So I suppose I have to think this is my time to practise and learn(?) and surprise you (and me) all in next challenges. But anyway, it makes me ashamed to show you my stats...

I finally got around to playing my second season over the last few days. I didn't have the ambition to record all the roster moves I made this time around though.
I discovered that no one wants a depth defenseman who makes $2.7M a year. I shopped Craig Rivet to every team in the league and no one was interested. I wound up waiving him and sending him to Hamilton, then releasing him outright to clear his salary off my payroll. The board weren't too impressed, but between that and trading away Jan Bulis and Slava Kozlov I managed to make enough cap room to sign Simon Gagne who has been an absolute beast for me. He's averaging nearly two points per game.

Nice! I didn't know you could do this...
I just looked up my transactions, and I had the option to print them to a text file.
Here's hoping the formatting works, since I can't edit my post.

So seems, I have to be hanigng out with YOU folks now, so heres a list of my off-season moves, and in typical E5150 fashion, I traded away all my picks except my first round.
Picked up Caron from Waviers
Signed Free Agents: Gauthier, Vaananen, Sarich, Wright, Yzerman
Trades:
Jagr to the Red Wings for Nikilas Kromwell, Kyle Quincy. (I didn't want Jagr, and the Wings were the only team who had atleast a semi decent offer for him)
2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks to the Devils for Parise.
6th round pick for Konowalchuk (who was previously on waviers twice)
7th round pick for Anderychuk (hes 42, what do you expect for him?)
Traded Markov, Dandeaut, Komisarek to Chicago for Byflugin, 2nd round pick in 2007 and 4th round pick in 2009. (I had too many defensemen, and I didn't feel like selling them all seperate, so I sold them as a group. Man was my board widdled.)
Line-up going into pre-season:
Cole - Koivu - Gionta
Williams - Boyes - Ryder
Garth Murray - Fisher - Konowalchuk
Andreychuk - Yzerman - Wright (Can anyone guess what this line is for?)
(No defined pairing's just yet.)
Souray - Sarich
Vaananen - Warrener
Hale - Gauthier
Theodore - Caron.
Notable prospects that will be brought in for injury's.
Parise, Perezhogin, Chipchura, Locke, Kromwell, White, Quincy, Yann Danis.
Thats all I got for now.
