I did a search for this, and only found a thread that seemed to discuss the freeware original EHM with the SI versions, so I figured a new thread would be alright... apologies if not...
Here's my question... I'm not that technical a computer guy. I can figure some semi-advanced (at least to novices) things out, but when it comes to real coding, game design, etc I'm in the dark, so I don't know if my idea/suggesstion is even plausible, but here goes....
We all want to see a new version of EHM, but I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon, if ever. So what if SI were to re-release NHL EHM 2007 as a completely "open-source" program. As stated before, my tech savvy is limited, so I'm not even 100% sure what open-source means, but from what I gather it would allow the more advanced users (like those who created the pre-game editors) to really have a free for all on the game.
With an open-source version of this game, would we not be able to:
- Add playable/non-playable leagues without the need of replacement
- Remove the hardcode for # of teams in leagues
- Add ability for teams to move cities/names/colors during a saved game
- Other possibilities could be endless
Again, I do not even know if this would work the way I assume it would, and if it did if it even makes financial sense for SI to release the game this way. I'm just curious as to who is open to this idea and more importantly, would it even work?
Thanks.
EHM 07 Open Source

Re: EHM 07 Open Source
Wow. This is really interesting. It would be a really cool thing if someone could get it done, or someone might invent a new game exactly like EHM 2007.
Ah forget it...trying not to sound sarcastic. Hockeysauce...there are about 20000 threads on this. Including in the new hockey games forum, and in the game add on forum. And someone right now ... in fact two groups are working on new hockey management games.
It will not be released as open source...becuase the game shares alot of coding with another SI game, and it is still being sold (One of the football management games)

Re: EHM 07 Open Source
batdad is correct on both accounts. There's been a lot of discussion on this in various places, and the unfortunate conclusion is that EHM is heavily based on Football Manager. Since Football Manager is still very much an active product from SI, they won't want any of it getting into the wild, even if it's older code.
Maybe one day it could be "declassified", but by then we'll already have new games. The great OOTP team has just started a hockey project, and dabo has been working on one of his own for a while. We've got forums for each of them, which you can find here: OOTP Hockey Forum, dabo Hockey Forum.

Re: EHM 07 Open Source
In addition to the above, I expect the risk for any company who releases source code is that somebody could make some changes and release the game as their own - thereby making money off SI's work.
As far as I know, not even the older versions of CM/FM have been released as open source. For example, Championship Manager 2 (released in September 1995) has never been released as open source. To be honest, I wouldn't ever expect SI to release EHM as open source.

Re: EHM 07 Open Source
Apologies for not doing a thorough enough search... I didn't at all think I was the first person to think of this, but I just didn't see a lot when I searched.
Thanks for all the info... I'm real interested in the OOTP hockey project, I found the customization of their baseball games amazing, and had I the slightest clue how to manage a baseball team I might have spent a ton of time playing it.
Thanks for the links to the forums as well...
