Reinventing the Habs

Post by Sushamiboy »

*Hi all. Been a while. So I had plans to write my adventures with the new MAnimal 4.0 rosters and the custom start date patch but never got a chance. But here I am. I have tweaked the rosters a bit as well by completing the major trades. I only did one coach "reassigning" as I'm playing Montreal. So players have been improved a bit just to reflect their on ice play and others were lowered for the same reason. Again my goal is to stay realistic in a Montreal environment. I will try to avoid retarded trades but may let one or two slip by as they do happen in the NHL. So saddle up and enjoy, first post coming soon.*

Re: Reinventing the Habs

Post by Sushamiboy »

Aug 31st: GM Cloutier is introduced and his game plan becomes quickly obvious, he intends to change the face of the Habs. The entire coaching staff as well as most of the scouting staff are let go. Their replacements will be announced shortly.

Sept 1st: When asked his gameplan for the off season, the new GM had this to answer:

“Rebuild. We need a new staff with a new mentality. We need to rebuild our shallow prospect pool. We need to rid ourselves of overpaid underachievers.”

Sept 2nd: A first roster move for the new administration as they keep a promise. One underachiever gone:

Montreal trade Scott Gomez to Phoenix for Raffi Torres and the rights to Alexei Kaigorodov.

“In Torres we receive a capable 3rd or 4th liner that adds depth and respectability to our team. At 6 foot and 216 pounds he adds much needed size. As for Kaigorodov he is a throw in which will be a project for us to bring back to North America. Hopefully Phoenix gets to turn Gomez around.”

Sept 4th: Fans did not have to wait long as GM Cloutier announced two members of his coaching staff as Bob Hartley becomes the newest head coach and Mike Modano is one of his assistants.

“I believe Hartley was the best choice and should have been appointed years ago to Head Coach here. He will be a leader to help us be what the Habs should be, true winners. In Modano we have a recently retired player who understands the current game and players can look up to.”

Sept 5th: New Canadiens' management show that there is one shift in philosophy, size matters. Two new signings bring bulk to the Habs lineup.

Wayne Primeau signed to a 3 year deal at $525,000 per season. Steve Bernier signed to a 2 year deal at $765,000 per season.

“In Primeau we have someone who will keep the Montreal PK to the level that it has always been known. He is 6'4” and 229Lbs which will make players think twice about bullying us around. With Bernier we get a native Quebecer with size, 6'2” and 224Lbs, who can put the puck in the net.”

It was also announced that at the end of his contract JP Dumont will be joining the Habs but the details were not released and GM Cloutier said he would discuss it when Dumont joined the team in April.

The coaching staff continued to materialize as Glen Hanlon joined the team.

“Hanlon is a veteran who supports Hartley with his vast experience. He will be respected by players as having a history as a true leader and winner. While the coaching staff is more anglophone with this addition I do believe that with a French coach we are respecting our fans but ensuring the best team of coaches to ensure victory.”

To continue the busy day GM Cloutier announced that two more trades were completed. While only one changes the current core, both set the stage for the Habs desire to go far in the playoffs.

Montreal traded the rights to Magnus Nygren to Vancouver for Sami Salo.

“Vancouver needed to shed some salary without receiving any in return. We jumped at the chance of adding a veteran like Salo. Again another big player, 6'3” and 211Lbs, the main thing is that at 37 years old he adds great experience and leadership.”

Montreal traded the rights to Morgan Ellis to Philadelphia for Ian Laperriere.

“Laperriere will be out for up to 4 months with a concussion so he was a non-factor for Philly. We thought that it was worth making a move now and swallowing the costs while not impacting our cap for a player that will come in at a time where we will need important points.”

Sept 6th: Stephane Richer joins the coaching staff.

“In Richer we get a true piece of Habs legacy behind the bench. He is one of the last truly gifted scorers this team has known and will hopefully bring that edge to our offensive players.”

In other news Jason Holland will join the Habs at the end of his contract in April. The details were not released.

Sept 7th: Free agent goaltender Pascal Leclaire is signed by Montreal to a 2 year deal at $610,000 per season.

“We felt that by adding Leclaire we would add a competition for the backup role. Leclaire is a hometown boy who has a legitimate shot at backing up Price come October.”

The coaching staff added a very key element today as Sam St. Laurent becomes the new goaltender coach.

“St. Laurent is from Quebec and understands the pressures of our tenders. I think he will help Price and whoever is his backup be all they can be.”

Sept 10th: With news that they are 5 players over the player reserve limit GM Cloutier announced that 5 players had been put on waivers with rumours circulating that these players could be released afterwards. The players are Peter Delmas, Joe Callahan, Hunter Bishop, Olivier Fortier, and Alain Berger.

Sept 11th: The team announced that only 4 players had been invited to the team's training camp, only 2 of which are actual team prospects. This illustrates even more the point that the team needs to improve its prospect pool. The players are Nathan Beaulieu, Shane Prince, Etienne Brodeur, and Michael Bounival.

Sept 12th: Needing to shed more salary Vancouver turned to Montreal again as they swapped for another prospect.

Montreal traded the rights to Darren Dietz to Vancouver for David Booth.

“Booth is a great player with a lot of offensive upside. While it is saddening to see a prospect like Dietz go, we knew this was a great opportunity to add to our top 6.”

Sept 13th: Sporting an AHL line up of prospects, Montreal was defeated 3-2 by San Jose.

Sept 14th: Montreal completed their coaching staff today with the addition of former Habs player Eric Desjardins.

“Like with Richer, we get to add in Desjardins a person who has lived through our system and is part of the Quebec tradition.”

Sept 17th: As expected the 5 players waived were released by the Habs.

While with the good intentions of adding true local talent, GM Cloutier managed to anger fans and management alike as her traded with the hated Boston Bruins.

Montreal sent the rights to Jared Tinordi and the rights to Daniel Pribyl as well as three 2nd round picks and a 3rd round pick to Boston for Patrice Bergeron.

“I didn't feel that Tinordi was going to develop the way I wanted and neither was Pribyl. It was costly in picks but the next two drafts are rather shallow and the chances of those picks turning into a player like Bergeron are rather slim. With Bergeron we now have two solid two-way pivots for our top lines.”

The reserve list crept up on the Habs again and 3 players were placed on waivers. Travis Moen, Gabriel Dumont, and Joonas Nattinen were the victims.

Later in the evening the Habs lost 2-1 to Boston even with the great play of P. Leclaire.

Sept 19th: Insidehockey.com released its team ranking and placed Montreal 15th overall with Carey Price as the team MVP and Patrice Bergeron as the key new addition to the team. The top 3 were Buffalo, Boston, and Chicago which announces for a tough year for the Habs.

Sept 20th: Still sporting an AHL roster to give players a look, Montreal was destroyed 7-2 by Dallas.

Sept 21st: In an amazing first start for P. Budaj the Habs still did not manage to win as they dropped another 3-1 against Pittsbugh. Fans are aching to see the real roster as again this was a pool of prospects.

Sept 23rd: Shane Prince was signed to an entry level contract. He was then returned to his junior team as Montreal trimmed its roster. Louis Leblanc, Aleksandr Avitsin, and Brendan Gallagher were also sent to their respective junior teams.

The roster is as follows:

Pacioretty – Plekanec – Cole
Booth – Bergeron – Gionta
Bourque – Desharnais – Bernier
Torres – Primeau – Moen

Markov – Subban
Kaberle – Gorges
Campoli – Salo

Price – Budaj

extra players on roster: Leclaire, Darche

With their real roster the Habs won 4-1 against Philly. Torres and Kaberle were injured and may miss up to 10 days each.

Sept 25th: With Torres and Kaberle injured Darche and Diaz were inserted in the lineup. Montreal won its last exhibition game 5-2 against the Rangers.

Sept 30th: The Hockey News released its yearly top 10s. Carey Price made the list as the number three rated goaltender going into the season. PK Subban joined his buddy also ranking third on the defensemen list. Subban was also named 8th on the prospect list.

Montreal traded again with Boston, blurring the lines of rivalry taboos. They reacquired their 2nd round pick in the process.

Montreal traded Yannick Weber to Boston for a 2nd round pick and the rights to Carl Soderberg.

“With the reserve list and a few players ahead of Weber we felt this was a good return as we get our 2nd round pick back and a possible depth player.”

Re: Reinventing the Habs

Post by Sushamiboy »

*I will be posting the 3 Habs players who I think did the best in each game as the Habs 3 stars. This is not reflective of the actual 3 stars.*

Oct 6th: SO Loss. While the season starts with a 3-2 shoot out loss to Buffalo, the stellar play of Carey Price who made 50 saves is promising for the season ahead.

Habs' 3 stars: Price (50 saves), Primeau (1g, 1a, 1st star), Markov (1a, +2)

Oct 7th: OT Loss. Sticking with new team philosophy, it was Peter Budaj in nets as Montreal was beaten 3-2 in overtime by Toronto.

Habs' 3 stars: Plekanec (1ppg), Bourque (tying goal), Gionta (2a)

Oct 8th: Habs complete another trade to bulk up their defense. It was an obvious salary dump for Colorado.

Montreal trade Chris Campoli to Colorado for Shane O'Brien and Jan Hejda.

“When O'Brien was put on the trading block we knew we wanted his talent and size (6'3” and 229Lbs). We were willing to take on Hejda's hefty price tag.”

Hejda was placed on waivers right after the trade.

Oct 10th: Hedja cleared waivers and was sent to Hamilton.

Oct 11th: SO Win. Montreal finally registers its first win as it beat Pittsburgh 2-1 in a shootout.

Habs' 3 stars: Price (32 saves, 2nd star), Plekanec (1g), Desharnais (shootout game winner).

Oct 14th: Win. It only took regulation for Montreal to beat out Ottawa by a score of 3-1.

Habs' 3 stars: Kaberle (1g, 1a, 1st star), Price (22 saves, 3rd star), Darche (game winning goal)

In other news, Nathan Beaulieu was name QMJHL Defensive Player of the Week. Hejda was released by the team.

Oct 17th: Win. The new face of Montreal seems to be one of victory as the Habs won 4-2 against Edmonton.

Habs' 3 stars: Cole (2g, 1a, 1st star), Plekanec (2a), Bergeron (game winning goal)

Oct 18th: SO Win. Budaj does not was to give the role of backup over to Leclaire and proved it as he shutout Columbus in a 1-0 shootout win.

Habs' 3 stars: Budaj (25 save shutout), Bergeron (shootout goal), Kaberle (shootout goal)

Oct 21st: Win. The Habs came out early scoring 5 goals in the first period on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Wild. Montreal had 4 powerplay goals.

Habs' 3 stars: Cole (4a, 2nd star), Plekanec (1g, 2a, 1st star), Bergeron (2a, +2, 3rd star)

Oct 23rd: Loss. Buffalo showed why they are first in the East as they handed Montreal their first regulation loss of the season 5-4. Price was injured during the game and may miss up to 10 days.

Habs' 3 stars: Markov (2a, +1, 1st star), Booth (2g, 3rd star), Cole (2g, 3rd star)

Oct 26th: SO Win. With a bad performance last game by Budaj it was not surprising that Montreal turned to Leclaire and was rewarded by a 2-1 shootout vicotry.

Habs' 3 stars: Leclaire (31 saves, 1st star), Booth (1ppg), Desharnais (4 shots)

Oct 28th: SO Win. With Price available but still injured Montreal let Leclaire lead them to a 3-2 shootout victory.

Habs' 3 stars: Booth (1ppg), Bernier (1g), Leclaire (26 saves)

Oct 31st: OT Loss. It took overtime for Ottawa to beat Montreal 4-3 in Leclaire's 3rd straight game.

Habs' 3 stars: Plekanec (1ppg), Bernier (1g), Subban (1g, 14 shots)

Month End Report:

Team: 11GP-7W-1L-3OT/SL-17PTS (4th in East)

Re: Reinventing the Habs

Post by Sushamiboy »

Nov 1st: Nathan Beaulieu was named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Month.

Nov 2nd: Win. Price still being injured Montreal turned again to Leclaire who helped them beat Tampa Bay 3-2.

Habs' 3 stars: Bergeron (1g, 2a, 2nd star), Markov (1g, 2a, 1st star), Subban (3a, 3rd star)

Nov 4th: Win. Leclaire keeps making a name for himself as he posts his 4th win as Montreal defeated the Islanders 3-1.

Habs' 3 stars: Cole (1ppg), Leclaire (19 saves, 3rd star), Bernier (game winning goal).

Nathan Beaulieu was named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Week.

Nov 7th: Loss. Leclaire bombed in what is the last game before Price's return as he was chased after letting in 3 goals on 4 shots in a 6-1 loss to Vancouver.

Habs' 3 stars: Desharnais (1g), Bernier (1a), Budaj (26 saves)

Nov 11th: Win. The players wanted to make sure they welcomed Price back in style and gave him an 8-2 victory versus Toronto.

Habs' 3 stars: Cole (2g, 1a), Bergeron (1g, 2a, 1st star), Booth (1g, 2a, 2nd star)

Nov 13th: Loss. Price and the Habs were unable to beat Ottawa as they were defeated 5-3.

Habs' 3 stars: Subban (1g, only player in the plus with +1), Bergeron (1g, 1a, 3rd star), Bourque (1g)

Nov 13th: Loss. Budaj got a rare start and made the least of it as Montreal lost 5-1 to last place Winnipeg. Pacioretty was injured in the game and can miss up to a week.

Habs' 3 stars: Bergeron (1g), Bourque (2 shots, 4 hits), Gorges (1 shot, 4 blocked shots)

Nov 14th: Win. Price and the Habs wanted to make fans forget the loss quickly as they destroyed Washington 6-0.

Habs' 3 stars: Pacioretty (2g, played injured), Price (27 save shutout, 2nd star), Bergeron (1g, 1a, 1st star)

Nov 18th: Win. Price and Bergeron continue to be on fire as Montreal shutout Florida 4-0. Bergeron has 6 goals in 5 games and Price has his second shutout in a row.

Habs' 3 stars: Bergeron (2g,1a, 1st star), Price (22 save shutout, 3rd star), Booth (1g, 1a, 2nd star)

Montreal completed a trade after the game that worked on improving their prospect pool.

Montreal sent the rights to Josiah Didier to Edmonton for Olivier Roy.

“Roy will address our lack of prospect depth in nets behind Price. He also comes from a hockey family from a local legend so it adds to our rich history.”

Roy was reassigned to the QMJHL right after the trade was announced. The move brought Montreal over the reserve limit and Budaj was placed on the waivers. Nathan Beaulieu was named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Week.

Nov 21st: With Budaj having cleared waivers another move was to be done to be under the 50 player limit and so a trade was done.

Montreal sent Raffi Torres and a 6th round pick to the Rangers for a 3rd round pick.

“Torres had yet to play and we felt this was the best value going in. A 3rd rounder is an asset we can either flip or gamble to get a prospect.”

Nov 22nd: Win. Guided by more strong play by Price, Montreal beat Calgary 3-1.

Habs' 3 stars: Price (31 saves, 3rd star), Booth (game winning goal), Subban (2a, 1st star)

Nov 24th: Loss. Buffalo continued its domination on Montreal and the East as they won 6-2.

Habs' 3 stars: Pacioretty (1g, 1a), Cole (1g, 1a), Subban (1a, +1)

Nov 25th: Win. Even a 3 goal 3rd period push could not help the Penguins from losing 5-3 to the Habs with Leclaire in nets.

Habs' 3 stars: Moen (1g, 2a), Plekanec (1g, 1a, 2nd star), Primeau (2a, 3rd star)

Nov 28th: Win. Price bounced back as Montreal won 4-2 against Washington.

Habs' 3 stars: Bourque (1g, 1a, 1st star), Desharnais (game winning goal), Bernier (2a, 3rd star)

Dec 30th: To make room for Laperriere who is coming off injured reserve, the Habs made a trade.

Montreal traded Travis Moen to Buffalo for the rights to Nathan Lieuwen.

“With Laperriere's price tag coming on the books something had to come off. In Lieuwen we continue to build our prospects in goal.”
