Interesting Waiver Move

Ilya Kovalchuk led the league in goals and then just before the next season begins, the Devils put him on waivers. I'm assuming it has to due with the price of his contract and the length, but still found it pretty odd that they wouldn't trade him first.

I've seen this happen quite a bit. Usually the team is up against the cap and for what ever reason the AI decided to waive the most expensive contract.
