Playing as GM only

How many of you let your coach manage the games? I am thinking about trying it out, see what happens. But, i guess the coach needs good man management amonst other things?

How succesfull have you guys been with this system?

I switch up. If I can't find that right tactics for the team, or I'm just too lazy to tweak them myself, I let my coach take over for a bit.

I always play this way because it's the more realistic way to go, and I am usually more successful as the GM than when I'm the GM/coach.

I just try to pick up the best coaching staff I can find, and then let them work their magic. When I do look for coaches, I try to get a head coach who is strong in all areas. Then with my ass't coaches, I hire them based on specific jobs for training players. For example, all my ass't coaches have to have good mental skills, but technical skills will vary from strong defensive coach, offensive coach, conditioning, etc. based on what I want them doing in training.

What are your views on letting the head coach take over practice aswell?

Whenever the head coach takes over practice it looks like hes sitting on the bench with a beer while the players skate in circles like a roller disco.

Guys also seem to get pushed to the 'Resting' schedule and never come back far farrrr too often as well. I won't get into my own personal views on this area as all I really know of the game from this angle is from running games this way to get as far ahead as fast as possible during testing.

Everyone seems to find their own best way to approach the game to get out of it what their end-goal is. And even when conforming to a set of specific rules like we've done to "level the playingfield" in our Challenges for example people still bring very different approaches to the game; it's actually one of the games' strengths in that it does provide for a lot of different approaches.

I personally play my games with as much direct decision making afforded me by the settings so I won't use this thread to proselytize those who don't ;) but if you really want to build a team with a specific identity and get them playing the way you want you'll do best to learn about as many of the game's options as possible.

Personally, I never give him control of practices. He uses only two areas: General and Goalies. Never touches the others, and your team quickly dies because of it. It's easy enough for me to do, so I do it ;)

I like being able to evaluate players' performance by actually watching and playing coach. Call me a control freak =P

A good example of this is when I acquired Jamie Lundmark for my Flames season, I initially placed him on the fourth line. After seeing him rushing towards the net and getting several good scoring chances with fourth line minutes in his first game, I quickly moved him up to my second line and eventually my first line with some great results. I now consider him a great addition to my team and since joining he's been around a point per game, which aint bad for giving up a 4th round pick. Too bad I overplayed him and now he's injured :(

My point is if he was being placed on the lines by the coach, he'd still be on the 4th line and be the average player i expected him to be when i nabbed him.

That's the one thing that I don't like about the AI coaching. It's line management as a whole isn't very good, and sometimes just plain odd.
