Luongo for Bertuzzi

TSN.ca is reporting that a big multi-player trade is occuring between Florida and Vancouver, with both Bertuzzi and Luongo said to be in the mix.

Ah, the craziness of draft weekend. More details to follow soon....

UPDATE: The trade's been completed and it looks like Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alex Auld are going to Florida, with Luongo and Lukas Krajicek going to Van.

Although Auld has proven to be a capable #1, he is no replacement for Luongo. I wouldnt be surprised if another deal is made for a more skilled tender.

As for Van, my guess would be that Clouts is on the way out, and Noronen will be backing up Luongo.

Yeah its pretty interesting now. Luongo, Kipper and Theodore in the same division, I mean WOW. Next year will definately be interesting, and this is just the beginning.

With Vancouver, Calgary, Colorado, and the newly crowned western champion Edmonton, I say the team that won this division is arguably one of the best if not THE best team in the NHL.

That's why Northwest is the best!!! other divisions are jokes, expect for Northeast (not counting TML)...

I mean, can you ask for anyone better in exchange for big Bert? With Jovo possibly going too, the addition of Luongo mad us Canucks fan worry no more about our defence.

Now the only question remain: who's gonna replace Bertuzzi?

Do you guys know some artist actually made a song about Bertuzzi? It goes something like this in the chorus:
"44, they call him todd bertuzzi
44, they call him todd bertuzzi..."

and now big old bert is gone, its a bittersweet trade to be honest.

Well I dunno about that. I keep hearing that although Luongo is a great goaltender, he gives up as many rebounds as Jussi Maarkanen. If I were Nonis, I'd be looking to upgrade the D-men, especially if the UFAs possibly not returning.

Luongo is the king of the rebound as 15 or 20 of his standard 60 shots faced a game can be due to his own rebounds. It's just part of the package though; he does have great skills and mental tools which can be just as important sometimes.

I think that the 'fit' here is good for him actually as Luongo is used to getting tons of rubber; if he was to go to a team that played heavily defensive and forced him to adapt to having half of a period without seeing a shot I wonder what his results would be.

However the deal itself with Luongo being dealt doesn't surprise me, I also am not surpised that Bert was given a ticket out of town. It is mildly surprising though that both found themselves in the same deal.

Luongo has signed a huge $27M, four-year deal with the Canucks now. What has he done to deserve that kind of money? Hasn't even played a game in the playoffs yet.

It's the kind of deal that Florida didn't want to give him... so it's not surpising that that's the neighborhood of the Canuck's deal to him as they had to make sure they could sign him after making such a giant move.

By the "hasn't even played a playoff game" token though; we know a helluvalot more about his potential then say San Jose did about Toskala, Buffalo did about Miller or Carolina did about Cam Ward before they played their first playoff games this year.

Yeah, but those three guys (Toskala, Miller and Ward) weren't playing on huge contracts before making their playoff debuts.

Keep in mind Luongo did play at numerous interational events, which the pressure is similar to playoff.

The Canucks needed a real #1 goalie,and Luongo might be this one... For sure,he let too many rebounds,but he has the skills to stop the new shoots he has to deal with,so...

Time will tell if it's true or not,but i think it's a good deal for the Canucks,even if he's far overpaid... 6.75 millions per year are far too much for a goalie who hasn't played any playoff game...

I think he'd better deserve something around 4 millions per year...

But as the Canucks hadn't have such a good goalie for years,thay maybe wanted to be sure he'll stay a while with them... Afterall,it's their financial situation...

They'd best hope he play better than Turco did in the first year of his whopping 2nd NHL contract... however it truly is the most elite of elite positions so if you look at it from a "Who else of this level is out there?" based upon skill and potential I think Luongo is as safe a bet as you can get. However I'd ahve said the same about Turco coming into this year so we will have to wait and see.

The best you can do without being able to see the future is make the strongest percentage plays you can; nobody is a sure-fire can't miss no matter what their talent level or experience but you can do your best to make sure you only make such high stakes gambles on guys that have a very high percentage chance of success and I think Luongo is clearly one of those guys. The percentage chance of his being a complete bust are very very low but there is always that chance with any player.
