New Flames head coach!

Post by Shadd666 »

Sutter resigned from his head coach duty. He stands the Flames GM,but gives the head coach job to Jim Playfair, who was one of his assistants for a couple of years.

More details on the Flames site:

What do you think of that guys? :-k

It sounds good to me,but i'm not an expert of the real-life coaches,so... :dunno:

This was the plan from the day Sutter was named GM.

Thanks for the answer ;)

I hadn't have internet when Sutter was named GM,so i couldn't know it

What might eventually change with Playfair? It seems that i want to continue the way Sutter did,and he seem to be a skilled guy,so i'm not really afraid for the Flames... But,as i said,i'm not a specialist of coaches,so...

I've heard Playfair and Sutter are pretty similar, so there probably won't be any major changes of the Flames' playing style. Something else I heard was that Playfair's teams shoot the puck a LOT. Maybe the Flames will become a bit more offensive minded? :dunno:

It should be a nice thing,as we hadn't score a lot last year... And the addition of Alex Tanguay (who will play at the center in the Flames organisation) will be a great improvement for the offense,as Iginla won't be the only huge threat in the offensive zone,so he'll have more space to play...

It certainly wouldn't take much for them to be "more offensive minded" as they were the lowest scoring team to make the playoffs... 8-)

Playfair was a very Sutter-like player and has been rumored for some time to be a very good coach so this should be a good move for them I'd think. I think the GM/Coach job is a bit too much for one guy, personally. But then the Hawks have had three guys as GM (Wirtz, Puhlford and whoever has the actuall GM title) for a few decades

They were also the best defense all over the league ;)

But,for sure,Flames need to score more. I've suggested before the playoff that Kiprusoff may have to learn to shoot too if Flames wanna score...but he hadn't do so,and Flames have been ejected in the first-round,taking a shutout against in a 3-0 Ducks win in game 7 at Calgary...

Now,with a Tanguay and Iginla on the first line,Kipper should concentrate harder on his goalie skills,no needs to learn to shoot :-p

And if the defense remains as strong as in the past years, the Flames will be a serious threat for anyone, and maybe take a look toward the Stanley Cup...

I'll miss Sutter not being behind the bench. I swear that every time the Flames took a bad penalty or had some other call go against them, the TV cameras would quickly get a close-up of Darryl. He'd always have some really screwed up expression on my face that would just make me laugh my ass off. :-p

I really hope Jimmy's up to the task. He did win the Calder Cup as the head coach of the Flames former AHL affiliate, the Saint John Flames. Although it is a minor league trophy, its nothing to scoff at as both John Totorella and Peter Laviolette have also led teams to the Calder Cup in the past IIRC. Hopefully Playfair can get the same sort of success that those two achieved.

Playfair seems to be a skilled coach,he knows the Flames orgnisation pretty well,he is in the same coaching way as Sutter,he should have some advices from Sutter if needed, and he has a strong team to coach, with talented and determined players,so i think it will be okay ;)

He has all the keys to perform well at this level, even for his first season.

I think that a division title and passing the first round of the playoff would be a good season,as it's only his first one in the NHL... But,of course,i hope for more ;)

Slighty off-topic but that must be nice... the 'hope' and all, I'm still just hoping the Hawks meet my extremely low "hopes" of "I just hope we're not the worst team in the league and don't embarrass ourselves too much." Unfortunately not even that seems to be attainable in recent years :dunno:

The Hawks have solid goaltending with Khabibulin, good young D-men who maybe need a bit more experience, and next season they'll have a real natural goal-scorer with Havlat...

Maybe your prayers will be heard this year :-)
