Trading for a Goalie? Help!

Post by CanucksFan1993 »

Hey guys, Antero Nittymaki recently retired and I'm in need of a number one goalie. I have two prospect goalies in the minors, but they aren't ready.

I scanned through rosters of other teams to look for a goalie that could handle the starting job, but no matter who I try to trade for, I'm out of luck. They either don't want to trade the goalie, or want something "big" in return... at one point, I sent a trade offer to the Nashville Predators in exchange for their young 24 year old goalie [Randy Owen], but they wanted my two first round picks of the next two years as well as Nathan Horton, and they wouldn't accept anything but that, and I'm not willing to part ways with Nathan Horton, especially after the points he put up the previous year.

Anyone have any tips/advice on what I can do to get a deal done without overextending? Thanks.

I've never had much luck trading for goalies. The free agent market is the only thing that works for me. I've had occasion when a goalie retired to late to get a good UFA so I've had to try the scrap heap and hope to survive till the next summer. sometimes a half decent goalie gets put on waivers at the end of training camp or sometimes you can find team that has extra goalies and you might get an O.K. one that way. Young goalies usually don't work for me so I go for experience.

Draft, sign, or trade for someone who has a name that is actually spellable. I have made deals for goalies in the past. They are hard to get for sure. I look for teams with 3 on their roster....usually they have at least 2 vets and a young one. I try to deal for the least expensive of the vets. Quite often that guy is getting no ice time because the young guy is getting development time. Even if they suck. If you find that spot the goalies are usually available at a decent value no matter how good they are.

Caution: I never find a star goalie this way. Just a guy who is a decent starter....but with me, I don't care if my goalie is good, just as long as he is average I can do well.

Hehe how many years has this joke been running now?!!

I'm sure anybody who does a Google search for Nittymaki (the wrong spelling) ends up being directed to one of Tasku's annoyed posts! :-D
