Franchise Hockey Manager Release Date and Beta Details

Post by dave1927p »

UPDATE:
Tuesday, September 3, 2013 the release date.

March is open beta for people who preorder.

Great news in a way. The beta i'm sure will have some big bugs but a release date is official at least even though it is further then expected i'm not entirely surprised:
JeffR wrote:First, I'd like to thank everyone for their continuing interest in FHM, and particularly those of you who've made an effort to spread the word about our game. Naturally, there's been a lot of discussion and speculation lately about the release date.

After careful consideration of the current state of the game, the resources we have available, and the demands of OOTP's release schedule, we've decided that the first version of Franchise Hockey Manager will not be released until September 3. While we're happy with the way the game is shaping up, it's clear that pushing a 1.0 version out the door now, before it's ready, would be a disservice to our customers and could do a lot of long-term harm to what we think is going to be a great game. So we're going to take the time to do it right. And yes, that is a firm date this time - not "sometime in September," not "during the third quarter." Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

However, if you're really anxious to play, you won't have to wait that long to get your hands on the game. Since we realize that many people have been patiently waiting for a long time and were expecting a release this winter, we're going to begin accepting pre-orders much earlier than we normally would - March 4, to be precise. And anyone pre-ordering will get access to the Beta version of the game at that time. The pre-order price will be $29.99, $10 off the full price of $39.99. For that, you'll get the release version of the game in September, as well as all the Beta versions between March and the release.

Now, just to be very clear about what kind of a game you'll be getting in March if you choose to pre-order, I emphasize the word Beta. There will be bugs. There will be missing features. The database will not be as polished as it will be in September, and may be missing some playable leagues at the start. Your saved games will become obsolete as newer versions of the Beta are released. In short, all the annoying things you'd normally expect to see in a pre-release game.

Over the next month, we'll be announcing a detailed list of exactly what will and won't be in the Beta. We don't want anyone spending their money without having a good understanding of what to expect.

But the Beta version will be as playable and feature-heavy as we can make it, and we're going to spend the next month making sure of that. To that end, I've recently accepted a full-time position with Out of the Park Developments, and will be working as FHM's Producer, That brings our full-time FHM staff to three and allows Sebastian and Malte to spend more time coding and less dealing with all the other demands of a getting a game ready for release. We'll also be adding a few more researchers to our database team.

So, on behalf of the FHM team, I thank you for your continued patience, and ask for just a little more of it. We want this game to be one you'll play for many years to come.

Producer, Franchise Hockey Manager

Cool. I have a month to decide if I have enough time and desire to pay $30 for a game that I will make sure completely sucks all of my available time. and of course, gets me in huge doo doo with the Mrs. But I think I will likely get the beta and go from there. So that way Dave you do not get all of the profit shares.

And then...I will have to listen to all the whining and complaining...but at least know what they are whining and complaining about. :-D

What kind of jerk says "told ya so.." ?

This kind... Called this release strategy. Fantastic strategy for all involved. Gives the fans that just want to play NHL the ability to get their hands on game and those complaining about fictional can either wait or play beta and it doesn't hurt the rest of us by them waiting.

As well a strong beta showing can strongly influence how well the full version does.

I was somewhat surprised at the Beta release, but at the same time happy to see it. I really thought that they were on their way to doing it without a public beta release. Happy to see some version of the game out in the first quarter of 2013. and like you said, it is like we are getting an early version 1, and a free version and upgrade in September. Great stuff.

This one too! :D I found out about this last week (after I posted that prediction) and have been dying to talk about it since. I'm glad they didn't waste any time making this news public.

I'm very much in two minds about the public beta. I know why they've done it, but I foresee absolute chaos as soon as the beta comes out. There's going to be people complaining about bugs, gaps in the database, how they have to restart their saved game every release, etc.

On the plus side, finally we get to play a new hockey game! :joy: A private beta hasn't been released since last month and so I'm expecting the next beta release will be much more polished than the previous betas.

I'm curious if these two features are in/going to be in this game:

1. Waiver eligibility - With EHM, there really wasn't a very easy way to tell if someone was exempt from waivers, or if they were about to be eligible for re-entry waivers. It would be good to see some sort of game countdown, or really anything that would help GM's know.
2. Multiple computers etc. - Will one license be able to be used on multiple computers? ie. if I install FHM on my computer then my laptop, can I use it legally on both? Will there be an easy way to use the same saved game on both? (I'm assuming no, and you would need to copy the .sav files like EHM, but it would be great)

The important thing is that we get the constructive criticism to them and not the whiney complaints that NHL 13 trades aren't possible. Although I have full trust that the dev team is smart enough to filter out the nonsense and get to the true issues/bugs etc. . . The faster we do that, the better the beta will become and eventually the final product.

There was a tab with waiver info in EHM.

Yeah but that would be hard to read.

Actually I get what he is getting at. Sometimes that tab would not say anything. So u get the guy and find out be actually does have to be waived. I always feel that is my fault though because I did not count pro games right. :)

Fair enough, it's been a while since I played EHM. I specifically remembered a screen somewhere that had boxes that were ticked or not (?) depending on waiver eligibility, but as you say it might not have been 100% reliable. Took me a year to find that screen as well :-D
That's one of my main concerns for the game by the way, I really hope they get all the details right about ELCs, waivers, IR etc

The problem was knowing ahead of time plus on some occasions I had a guy start the year not needing waivers and halfway through he all of a sudden needed waivers..... not right and could cost you a player.

Yeah..that is it Cee Bee...I was trying to say that. Box would only show up when he became eligible based on # of pro games he had played. And there was no warning so..

1. Unless you knew the # of games (200? I still don't really know for sure)
2. AND you paid attention on a daily basis to the # of games in the player career chart....

You would or could get yourself in trouble alot.

Have to say I'm glad to see a new hockey management game is being released.

I've longed for some NHL management ever since EHM. Football and FM is great and all but sometimes I miss the ice.

One of the things i'm interested in seeing is how the scouting and draft works. One of the things i hate about EHM is right when you draft a kid you see his stats instantly and could almost tell right away if you just wasted your first rounder. In real life it doesn't work that way, every GM is always pumped after selecting his first round pick. EHM has way too many NHLers in the draft classes too.
