When a game starts up there are three types of players/staff
- players/staff that were in the database at start up (visible in the Pregame Editor)
- players/staff that the game created at start up (not visible in the Pregame Editor, visible in the SavedGame Editor)
- players the game temporarily creates/recreates daily (the "grey players" you're seeing)

Whenever a team's roster is short of players the game will create "grey players" so the game can continue to advance.

For example, if you only had 2 goaltenders contracted and 1 got hurt, unless the game created a "grey player" goalie you wouldn't be able to continue your game!
These grey players are "temporary" as you've noticed (they change all the time and stats aren't kept for them)

I'd say that's the most common of them all. An injured goalie.

Yeah, these guys are just fake players you can play if its impossible for you to call someone up, or replace them. You have the option of double shifting, or just playing 1 short, or what have you, but it exists

personally I think you should have to offer a tryout to someone in the area, such as when the Canucks needed to call up a UBC goalie to be a back up
