Web Sim Hockey: Hockey Game of the year 2012 per OnlineSportManagers.com

News: Hockey Game of the Year 2012

14.03.2013 - In hockey edition of best games of the year 2012 contest, we have change on the top fom last year. It is again a partner game, which says a lot about what games do have biggest success at this portal. Congratulations to the Winner!!!

The winner in this category is a new game we added just last year called WebSimHockey. It is good game licensed by NHL Player Association, where you can manage your favourite NHL team. This game is best rated by far and also very popular.

The only game which were able to keep the pace in popularity was Powerplay Manager Hockey but they lost a lot of points in lower rating. Another good game, but obviously not as good as the winner. They dropped from last year first place.

Third place is again a game which moved down one spot from alst year. HockeyArena is a good game with long tradition. Unable to keep pace in either rating or popularity department but good enough to stay in top 3.

So here are the best online hockey manager games of the year 2012:

1.WebSimHockey
2.Powerplay Manager Hockey
3.HockeyArena

Hi all,

I was a guest at M. Net TV show, live at Musique Plus Studios in Montreal, Quebec, to present the new version 2.0 and the game in general.

It was really fun, here's a few pictures (sorry for picture size):

And here's how to join Web Sim and take a team as Interim GM in no time, at no charge:

1. Register on http://websimhockey.com
2. Once this is done, you will be redirected to your account page. You can ignore that page at this time, and click on the Web Sim Hockey logo on the top left. That will bring you to your News Feed.

Then follow the easy steps shown in the images below:

Transcending Fantasy Sports, Canadian Startup Web Sim Hockey Teams Up with NHLPA

Image

Web Sim Hockey is announcing their new partnership with the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), making the Quebec City-based startup’s online hockey simulator game the only one to have been granted an NHLPA license.

The increasingly popular multi-player hockey game puts users in the seat of general managers of pro hockey teams, allowing them to enter leagues with friends while drafting, trading and signing free agents. Social media integrations allow players tocomment on every action.

“We are thrilled to have concluded such a historic agreement with the NHLPA. Although we are an up-and-coming company, the NHLPA realized the potential Web Sim Hockey has for hockey fans worldwide,” said cofounding brothers Guillaume and Alain Quirion in a release. “The best of Web Sim Hockey is now here.”

The agreement only allows Web Sim Hockey to use player pictures, but its more the association with the massive sports icon that the startup is likely after. VP of research and development Eric Bergeron said that Web Sim Hockey approached the NHLPA with the idea after grossing $250,000 over the last few years. The suitors obliged.

“We were very impressed by how quickly Web Sim Hockey has evolved in just three short years,” said the NHLPA’s Martin McQuaig. “Web Sim Hockey is the perfect example of the next generation of high-quality online games—and we are proud to be associated with the team.”

With over 500 active hockey leagues, 10 000 teams managed on a daily basis, and 5 million monthly page views, Web Sim Hockey’s popularity has been growing at a substantial rate.

OnlineSportManagers.com named it Online Hockey Game of the year in 2012. Laurentian University, meanwhile, has used the game for two years now as part of its Bachelor’s degree program in Sports Administration.

The brothers Quirion coded the game from their apartment in 2005 and eventually brought it online in 2009. Along the way they hired Bergeron, who had previously worked with Alain Quirion at a website development company. Bergeron is a passionate hockey fan too, having organized 80,000 signatures to try and bring the Quebec Nordiques back to the NHL in 2005. The team is rounded out with Norman Berrette and Sebastien Lessard.

Any hockey fan engagging in an online league knows the pitfalls of fantasy sports: once the real season ends, everything stops. With Web Sim Hockey, users are engaged all year round, something that likely keeps its 5 million plus monthly page views constant. Users are staying on the site for an average of 192 minutes (in comparison, Facebook users stay on for 413 minutes while Yahoo! users stay on for 151 minutes).

“In 2013 people are much more willing to spend time on those types of games than five years ago, so were trying to get as many people to try it,” Bergeron told Techvibes. “After four years we’ve added tons of new features, we’re listening to our community, we’re always improve the game and we’re very inspired.”

The company has already received significant exposure from French media in Quebec but the challenge remains penetrating the English market (which doesn’t seem too daunting given English Canada’s hockey craze). It rests on whether they can bring the product to enough people’s attention and the NHLPA agreement should help in this respect.

Future plans include ideally forming partnerships with the American Hockey League (AHL), the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) umbrella organization and even Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Bergeron said they are also eyeing a tournament module to allow users to enter into monthly competitions outside of their own leagues.

Along with the NHLPA partnership, Web Sim Hockey’s version two is now out. The team is confident in the product and they’re ready to move forward. “It’s well made, we have a very strong and loyal community that enjoys the game and all we need is to share the word,” said Bergeron.

Every year when the regular season is over we release a full set of NHL players attributes.

The attributes are generated using 100% of the players stats of the current season, using complex formulas that are fair to all players. With so many stats available today, it is much easier to create attributes that represent every player accurately.

Click here to Download 2013 NHL Player set

Information about our methodology:

Attributes creation

A player must play a minimum of games during his NHL season to be added to the player set. The number of games varies depending on the following scenarios and is equally the same for both real and virtual player evolution mode.

New players
Rookie or veteran, a player who*was not*in the previous NHL player set must play a minimum of*40 games*to be created and added to the new player set. The minimum is*15 games*for a goalie (26 and 10 games respectively because of the lockout this year).

Existing players
A player who is already in the previous NHL player set must play a minimum of*15 games*to be created and added to the new player set. The minimum is*5 games*for a goalie. (8 games instead of 15 because of the lockout for this year only)

The statistics used to create the attributes are listed below:

Players

Durability: Games played
Stamina: Minutes played
Discipline: Penalty minutes
Strength: Height + Weight/Height ratio
Intensity:*Body checks, Blocked shots, Takeaways & Giveaways
Speed: Weight, Height & Shots/game
Finesse: Points/Game & Speed
Hockey Sense: Points/Game & +/-
Faceoffs: *Faceoff %
Passing: Assists/Game
Shooting: Goals/Game
Defense: Blocked shots/Game, +-, Takeaways & Giveaways, PK Time on ice*
Leadership: Captain/Assistant & Experience
Experience: Games played (career)
Potential: Expected overall at the age of 30, calculated using*the actual overall and player age.
Overall: Average of all attributes (some exceptions apply)
Fighting: Major penalties

Goalies

Durability: Games played
Stamina: Shots received and Durability
Discipline: Penalty minutes
Strength: Height & Weight
Intensity: Wins & Minutes played
Speed: Goal against average
Stick handling (finesse): Win %
Hockey sense: Shutouts, Intensity, Speed, Stick Handling & Saves
Passing: Goals, Assists and Hockey Sense
Shot block (saves): Save %
Leadership: Captain,*Age & Expérience
Experience: Games played (career)
Potential: Expected overall at the age of 30, calculated from the actual overall and player age.
Overall: Average of all attributes (some exceptions apply)

I'm doing the same task for the EHM rosters at the moment! :-D How well do you find the Stamina rating works based on TOI? I plan to set Stamina attributes for the players with the top TOI, but my worry about using it with the weaker players is that they have a low TOI because they're not good enough to play in the NHL rather than them not having good stamina.

I understand what you're saying but in the end, if we take for granted that every NHL player can log minutes because they all are in good shape, the Stamina attribute is there to determine how many minutes can you log at the NHL level.

On websimhockey, you would need about 80+ Stamina to play on the first line or else the player will have problems producing. It means he is out of place on the first line, even though he can still play it he won't be as effective.

Ah I see. I can see how that would work for your setup. I've been wondering how to get stamina updated for EHM, but I think because the game covers more than just the NHL, it might need to be tackled slightly differently (at least for the 3rd and 4th lines).

It's hard to tell for me because it depends on how EHM deals with Stamina.

For us, Stamina is used to determine how many minutes a player can take during a game as it affects the player's Fatigue during the game.

Fatigue is not an attribute but a value that fluctuates in the course of the game. The higher the stamina, the faster the Fatigue recovery when the player is on the bench.

The thing is, and this is where it gets tricky, if you play 2 workhorses on your first line, along with a player with a very low Stamina, the whole line might be penalized and they would play a little bit less to the profit of the other lines.

So when you draft your players, you should be aware of that, especially when you build your lineup.

First Web Sim Hockey Game Review: Score of 9/10!

The review was done by Lyne Bouthillette during Tech/Gaming TV show M. Net at Musique Plus, last friday.

It's really nice to have someone review our game, especially knowing that a 9 is very hard to get in their reviews.

With a mobile version, she said we would've had 10/10!

If you ever find the time, you can send me a message and I'll make sure you can join a league at no charge.

The time-consuming part is basically for the first few weeks, when you go through the draft. You must pick a player per day or so, as an average, using our online draft tools.

Once this is done (only once over the lifespan of a league), it is not too much time consuming or at least, you don't need to spend hours on it, but a daily login is enough.
