NHL Defensemen Ratings, TBL Rosters 2013-14

Post by nino33 »

Below are the top 98 NHL defensemen by CA, along with a bit of extra rating information.

Please feel free to offer your thoughts/opinions! That's why I prepared/posted the data!
If you weren’t aware, there’s also a Goaltenders thread http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... 45&t=11799

CA = Current Ability
PA = Potential Ability
OFF = Offensive Role
DEF = Defensive Role
Off Avg = the average rating of 4 significant offensive/scoring Attributes (Decisions, Vision/Creativity, Movement/Off the Puck and Passing)
Def Avg = the average rating of 4 significant defensive Attributes (Hitting, Checking, Pokecheck and Positioning)
The Skating column shows the player’s actual rating for each of the four skating Attributes (Acceleration- Agility- Balance- Pace/Speed)
Shot = actual Wristshot-Slapshot rating

The data below doesn't look at Mental Attributes (like Important Matches or Determination). Other important Attributes like Anticipation, Bravery, Consistency, Work Rate, Stamina, Natural Fitness and Strength are not included in the Offensive/Defensive Averages…I selected the Attributes I did (for the Offensive/Defensive Averages) based on my understanding of game mechanics, and the fact that to many Attributes makes it more difficult to actually determine what to edit.

There are 51 different Attributes and obviously not everything can be included in a chart intended to be an overview :-)

Couple things:

Jon Ericsson still has room for improvement. Ignore his age, he started playing defense at a very late age. When he came up to DET he had promise and then was a TRAINWRECK for a couple of years. Everyone wrote him off. Truth is, he quietly has finally developed into probably a solid 2nd pairing guy. No problem with the 145 CA, but maybe think about 150 for PA. He is literally still learning on the job and we Wings fans watch it on a nightly basis. 5 room to grow isn't huge I know but... he's not plateaued quite yet IMHO.

Make sure Kyle Quincey has the same PA and his CA, or possibly even a lower PA. He has no upside whatsoever and is what he is at this point. He's too stupid to grow any more. That sounds harsh, but it's the truth, he's one of the dimmest players I've ever seen to wear the winged wheel. He makes the same mistakes over and over and he's not exactly a young player anymore.

Hal Gill is wildly overrated. I don't know what else to say about his inclusion on here. He had trouble getting a gig this last offseason, his defensive ability is sketchy and his skating non-existent. He shouldn't be appearing on this list named IMHO.

Kevin Bieksa not on the list? He should be a top 4 on the Canucks and IMO not to far below Hamuis. Certainly better than Garrison. Better hitter, Better skater, better passer, at least as good a defender and only a slightly worse shooter. Also commented elsewhere but Tanev may very well be the Canucks best defensive dman and is improving a lot offensively. Not a great shooter but a darn good passer and one of the better skaters. I know he wasn't drafted and all that but the Canucks would be way down in the west without the good defensive play and goaltending, both of which seem to be lacking in the db.

Strålman should be on the list aswell, a good 4th D-man. He needs his attributes reworked a bit though, he lost some offence while he worked on his defence. He's much more of an all-rounder IRL. Not sure how good John Moore is, he should be similar to Strålman with maybe 10 less CA and better skating.

Vlasic, Enström, Hedman, OEL, Phaneuf, Weber, Markov (?), Seidenberg, Keith (!), Subban, Pietrangelo and Karlsson all seem underrated to me.

While all the big defence-minded D-men seem really overrated, Mitchell, Orpik, Gill to name a few.

Edit: Staal and Girardi are also overrated while McDonagh is underrated.

I know he hasn't been playing in the NHL long but I think Tory Krug needs another look.

Gah I wrote a big response but apparently wasn't logged in so lost it all.

I'll try and write a shorter version.

Again I'll go into more detail on the Jets players.

Buff: Underrated overall. He is elite offensively and average defensively. Besides Karlsson there is arguably nobody better offensively when Buff is on his game, he can be unstoppable. Great shot, great playmaking, great puck control etc. Slap shot should be 19 or 20. He gets knocked defensively but his defensive technical skills are fine and should be bumped to an average level. It's the mental/effort side of the game that get him into trouble. He makes bad decisions, he gets moody, he gets lazy. His decisions, work rate, and natural fitness ratings should be lower than average to bring his performance down. Might bump his CA to 165 and round is PA to 170.

Bogosian: CA and PA about right overall. Hoping he tops out at more than 160 but that might be homerism. I would bump his skating and shooting a bit overall. A physical specimen, great strength, endurance, skating etc. Average hockey sense and bad decision making prevent him from being elite. Very injury prone too which has probably hurt his development.

Stuart (Mark): Very overrated, an average third pairing defenseman. Jets fans are hoping for an upgrade on the third paid next year.

Enstrom: Underrated. Probably the Jets most well rounded and steady defenseman, although his offensive production this year has been low. Not elite at anything but very good at most things. Especially underrated defensively where I would say he's above average (but not elite). Small and not physical but makes up for it with smarts, hockey sense and positioning. Poke checking is decent as he uses a long stick that he chokes up on when handling the puck and shooting.

Ellerby: Overrated. A good skating third pairing guy who may have a little room before he hits his ceiling. Does not take advantage of his size. PA should go down by at least 10.

Agreed that the defensive defensemen seem to be rated higher than the offensive ones. Was this done on purpose for balancing? I don't understand why Weber is rated below Brewer, Allen, Weaver, Mitchell etc.

Agree on all Peter_Doherty's comments.

Webber needs a big bump. He's top five, should be 180+ CA/PA.

Subban has won a Norris, Pietrangelo is elite at this point.

McDonagh is better than Staal now and is a GREAT skater.

I would bump Karlsson up a bit because he's so elite offensively.

Orpik seems ridiculously overrated, his CA should probably come down AT LEAST 20 points.

As for rookies, Jones and Trouba would arguably have a PA of 135+ already with LOTS of potential. Speaking of Trouba, there have been nights when he has been the Jets best defenseman. Extremely solid in all facets already and has great hockey sense and decision making as a 19 year old.

Thanks for the detailed feedback!

Just to get an idea of your CA ratings and just to clarify in relation to the above quote: Are you saying Webber is in the top 1.3% of all defencemen in the league? I.e. is he one of the top 4 defencemen in the league? This is where a 180+ CA would place him (there are 291 defencemen in the NHL with a CA of at least 100. 1.3% of 291 = 3.8 - hence why we describe the 180+ CA range as Top).

Regarding a 135+ CA for Jones and Trouba, are you saying they're at the very top of the Average range and bordering on the edge of Good? This would place them roughly within the top 30% of defencemen (i.e. approximately within the top 90 defencemen in the league)?

This is why i never stated any real numbers when giving my feedback. Better to just say who you think is too good or bad and in what areas and let the professionals deal with the specifics in most cases :)

Jones and Trouba has fitting CA levels to START the season with. They will both improve over the season.
I did bump Jones up to a -9, though

Absolutely! There has to be someone ensuring consistency. I wasn't trying to criticise in anyway. I was just unsure whether you meant you felt Webber was top 5 of all players for the Jets or top 5 defencemen in the league. :-)

Shea Weber is in the conversation for top 5 dmen...with Keith, Karlsson, Chara, Suter ...
There of course are one or two others that deserve some mention...Seabrook, Doughty, Carl Hagelin, Pear Juice and Sheldon Kannigeiser.

Sorry, getting specific with numbers might be jumping the gun a bit. I'll try to speak more generally.

Yes, I meant that Shea Webber is in the conversation for top five defenseman in the league. He is a perennial Norris Trophy candidate without any weakness to his game. If that means 180+ then yes in my opinion he should be there.

I think you can make the argument for Trouba to be a top 90 defenseman in the NHL now yes. Again, I'll admit to having homer goggles being a Jets fan but he's the real deal. He was the best defenseman at the world juniors last year, then played for the men's US team at the world championships. He has played 22+ minutes a night for the Jets this year on the second pairing getting powerplay and penalty kill minutes. Overall the Jets are a marginal team because their depth is terrible but this is mainly due to their forwards and starting goalie. Their defensive is a pretty talented group (Buff, Bogosian, Enstrom) and Trouba has been the best of the bunch on many occasions this year.

He seemed to have been in the olympic conversation before he went head first into the boards earlier in the year. Anyway, if people don't think he deserves to be around 135 to start the year that's fine, but I think 110 is a bit low and so are his staff attributes.

I can't speak in detail about Jones but he's looked pretty good so far from a distance.

One guy i'm really missing in that list is Jonas Brodin, "the new Lidström" here in Sweden. Playing first pair with Suter and from what i've heard and read he's doing a great job, only seen 2-3 games with him in Wild so far myself. He's also going to make the Olympics according to all experts so he should probably be on this list. What is his PA?

1. Weber--agreed.
2. Trouba--too small a sample size to agree. Tyler Myers looked like Zdeno Chara if you ask many a hockey guy in his first year as a youngster in the league. Same for Schenn....for now to keep things realistic you cannot jump the gun and give a guy like Trouba (although I do agree he is going to be at least a #3 dman on a good team)...also look at who he plays with on the Blue line. Just because he is maybe the top one or two Jet dmen, does not mean he would be in the top 4 in say Vancouver. That is like saying Justin Schultz should be a stud. He is good, but only because of the rubbish around him does he look better than what he is.
3. So I guess I disagree on your evaluation of Jet dmen talent. Dustin Byfuglien is ..... well at best a #4-5 guy on a top tier team. I mean the last time he was on one....he was not even allowed to play D. Bogosian is a #2-3 guy and Enstrom is the same. They get big minutes in Winterpeg like Edler does in Vancouver. Just because they are the best of the bunch they have. But not one of those guys mentioned is even in the discussion as a top 10 dman in the league, or even top 15 in the league. Maybe one or two (Edler and Bogosian) top 20.
4. Brodin--potential is there, but he is playing with one of the top 5 in the world. Makes you look better. He is darned good, but cannot get carried away with him. Again though...another young guy, small (bigger than Trouba) sample size. He to me is going to top out as a 2-3 guy on a decent team. OTher teams will have better #2 guys and worse #3 guys. whereas a few will have better #1

Again. not being mean just cautioning against rating too highly in any sense of the word. I do not want to play a game of EHM where Jacob Trouba ends up being the next Bobby Orr or even Zdeno Chara or Shea Weber. They are good prospects but nowhere near that level of ridiculousness. Even Chara has days where he looks like he belongs in the minors because he cannot move his feet at the elite level due to his monster size.

as for the game though...they need to be at least decent #4 dmen for now. Just because they play top 3 minutes or top 2 does not mean they are really top 2 guys. Again to use Vancouver...Chris Tanev is a top 5 dman, but is playing top 4 minutes right now. Dan Hamhuis is playing #1 elite dman minutes....but is he really there...or is he just there because VAncouver has nothing to be a #1. Hamhuis is a good solid #2, and Edler is a 2-3 tweener. Bieksa a 3-4 tweener. Garrison is a 4-5 with a BIG SHOT. That is when you compare them to the elites at their position. Hammer, Edler, Bieksa Garry do enough to be where they are on their teams, but if they played with the top level guys--Chara, Weber, Suter etc.....would they be as good as them? No way...and Trouba would not be near as good as Hamhuis, and Brodin would not be near as good as Edler.

See what I mean here boys....the pool has to be looked at on the whole. Not just within teams...it will make the individual teams too good tto rate to high.

Byfuglien especially. Big guy, strong and good shot, with a decent pair of hands. No work ethic, no hustle, no skating skill (Well a little maybe)....once he gets going like Looch. But....not really a top level dman.

Enstrom is almost the polar opposite of Buffetglien.

I think he needs a bump in both, but maybe thats just me.

to batdad; I never meant Brodin was a #2 D-man just because he plays those minutes, i can see how my post might have been misinterpreted though. What i meant is that he is a big talent that's already a good defenceman and should be rated as one.

LOl. Canuck fans will shoot me.

Edler PA is too high.

Bieksa CA and PA should be a little higher...maybe 140

Tanev PA should be between Bieksa and Edler.

Garrison should be a little lower, with offensive upside. Skating should be low....lower than Edler. Edler up in skating. Both should have better slappers than wristers( you may haave the slap shot 2nd on your list...if not reverse them...)

ALberts just sucks.

Yanik Weber should not have a higher PA than Bieksa...Weber as 130 all offense, no physicals no defense, and okay skater.

tanev skates much better than Edler, Garrison. Only Hamhuis is a better skater than him on the team.

Skating

Hamhuis
Tanev
Weber
Bieksa
Edler
Stanton
Garrison
Alberts

Garry is okay in straight lines, no mobility.

Stanton is decent all the way. Average skater...does nothing horribly, nothing well.

Tanev is smoother than Bieksa, and more mobile...Bieksa (for all that people say) has difficulty pivoting at top speed, and getting turned...lateral is average. Choppy ass stride...but works at it and strength helps him.

Now...all that being said...if I were to compare Hammer skating to Weber (Nash) and Karlsson....

Karlsson would be the stud

Weber would be pretty darn good

Hamhuis would be medium

(Erhoff definitely at the top in the d skating category)

Stanton CA---needs to be in the range of a good 5-6 dman. A good one. he would be a 4 on a naff team.
Stanton PA--lower than Tanev becuase of less offensive upside, but not super low.

If Bieksa is average guy....for a #4 dman, he is bang on CA=PA. But skating could be better.

I do not really follow PA/CA stuff at all...Just ranking the guys the way I see it

Shot

Garry
Edler
Weber
Hammer
Bieksa
Alberts
Stanton
TAnev (but Tanev is improving and will eventually get to average Bieksa level)

Bieksa should have chance to be a guy..one night is a stud, next night sucks. In game he is no better than a 5-6 guy ...an average one. He should be a really good 5 or a decent 4.

Stanton is better than Alberts, Weber already. Shot is all average, Skills are all average. Defensive dman, who can fight and will hit hard, but is smart about it.

Passing..

Hamhuis
Tanev
Edler
Bieksa
Stanton
weber
Garrison
Alberts

in order. None is really a great passer. Hamhuis and TAnev never get picked off..make smart plays and simple plays. Bieksa is adventurous and messes up. Stanton is just simple play.

Weber is good skill wise but screws up all the time.

ALberts sucks.

good. then it is basically right. Weber a little lower than Edler, but the size difference between the two may make enough of a difference. Weber will not succeed in the game at all, and will never get called up the way he is size wise. But..he is not really that much of a difference maker any way.
