Legwand to DET for God-only-knows-what compensation, and God-only-knows what reason.
Vanek to Canadiens for a 2nd and prospect.

Because Kesler was too expensive.
Canucks had a feeding frenzy. 6 teams in on Kesler, all big offers. Story here is ownership pulled the plug on Gillis and would not allow trade. Bye Mike. Have a nice life.

Huge trade for Wild getting both Moulson and McCormick. Very surprised Sabres gave up McCormick, doesn't seem like they got much for them either.
Legwand to DET is a meh move. Playoff streak may very well end this year with Zett and Datsyuk being injured so I don't love bringing in a 33 year old, but I guess its continuous with Holland loving his vets.
Still could have just resigned Filpula for all the problems at Center they've had

Don't know why they were in on Kesler either. As DET showed last night, scoring 3 and still losing, the problem is the atrocious back end and turnovers.batdad wrote:Because Kesler was too expensive.
So it's Legwand for Eaves, a 3rd, and a prospect playing in GR who cant be notified yet.
Just.... uggggghhhhh.... pretty bad deal. Legwand has very little offense, is not really an improvement over anyone, to be blunt. And he's a rental, a UFA after the season.

260-some man-games lost to injury. 100 to Groin, 48 Shoulder (most all to Ericsson and Dekeyser), 29 Head, 26 Knee, 25 Back, 10 Ribs, 6 Hand/Finger, rest Undisclosed.jesterx7769 wrote:Still could have just resigned Filpula for all the problems at Center they've had
It's sadly not just been a problem at C.
Lots of speculation that the prospect is Calle Jarnkrok which, if that's the case, Holland just got completely bent over. No other kind way of putting it,

Didn't say it was just at center but considering they just traded for one its relevant
they signed Weiss to the $ that could have gone to Filpula and now traded for a C. Defense is obviously the problem they just have no desire to fix it apparently as of yet

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
I really wasn't expecting Vanek to land in MTL. Another small guy. At least it didn't cost too much. Collberg could become an okay guy in the NHL. I just don't think Bergevin will try to sign Vanek anyway.
The only reason I'm thinking they got Dubnyk after he got waived is that Price could be gone for some time. Price trained yesterday but who's know how good he feels. Tokarski will play tonight probably to give a break to Budaj and Dubnyk got send down immediately to Hamilton. So maybe they want to give a shot at Tokarski who is doing well in the AHL.

My bad he is 6.2. I always thought he was like 6 or 5,10.
Meanwhile, Tim Bozon, who got drafted by MTL is currently hospitalized for a meningitis. His state is currently critic. Hope everything will be fine for the boy.

I really hate giving up those picks to Tampa but on the other hand, the Rangers aren't known to make the best decisions at the draft. At least not in the first round
The reason they waited until after he was waived is that the Preds picked up 25% of his salary so the Habs only pay him 25% (the Oilers pay half his salary)philou21 wrote: The only reason I'm thinking they got Dubnyk after he got waived is that Price could be gone for some time.

Makes sense. But what I really meant to say is that when Dubnyk got waived maybe they thought Price would be ok.

Manimal, i was fine with the trade until i heard that the 2nd rounder is a conditional, that made me a bit scared. Will be fun to see MSL in Rangers though

That Bozon thing is horribly sad.
Vanek will definitely help the Habs, but you were right to think he was small philou. He sure plays small.
Sather has lost his marbles. Callahan and two picks for a grandfather who is small? Really?

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
It depends I guess.batdad wrote:Sather has lost his marbles. Callahan and two picks for a grandfather who is small? Really?
Everyone imagines Callahan won't sign in TB. If he doesn't, then honestly it's two teams swapping rental players that wanted out, except NYR got the better player in return, thus the picks to even out.
If for some reason he actually does sign in TB though... then it gets pretty bad for NYR I think, a steep price. But I don't think Callahan signs.
There was speculation Yzerman might flip Callahan again before the deadline. Someone noted it would have been a very Yzerman thing to turn around and flip Callahan and a few other pieces for Kesler. We'll probably never know if he tried.
The Dubynk thing is just weird. Is he THAT bad? I didn't think his contract was that big a thing that waiting until he passed waivers would make a difference to a team. I realize he was basically Rinne Insurance and Rinne is back but...
RE: the Legwand trade... there've since been grumblings that Jarnkrok is bent on going back to play in Sweden and not interested in staying in North America (and not just random talk -- reliable sources citing talks they've had with specific Wings' personnel goign all the way back to last offseason). So I guess that maybe would make NAS's haul less-impressive if he does bolt or something. Either way though, it means DET blew a top prospect they spent time developing and hyping.
Vanek seems to have fallen far. How long ago was it 29 other teams would have been in on him?

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
St Louis isn't a rental, he is contracted over the next season aswell which is why the trade is OK. And if Callahan signs with TBL Rangers get the 2015 pick back from what i read.

He will be 39. I do not care what he has done in the NHL. St Louis will be 39, and you gave up a young very good player, a 1st round pick (perhaps 2) for that guy. That is what I call NUTS.
No if Callahan signs my understanding was it becomes two first round picks instead of a 1st and 2nd. At least I recall thinking that they Lightning could get 2 first round picks out of this deal.

Firstly, they had to trade Callahan because of his unreasonable demands. Secondly, if Callahan resigns NYR gets a pick back, not sure which one but i think its the 2015 one. If Rangers go to the conference finals the 2014 2nd rounder becomes a 1st rounder.

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
Imagine if NYR goes to CF. Lighting if they draft well could take two good players who together could produce more than St-Louis and even quicker maybe. (Since St-Louis started late in TB) Then the Rags have no one to draft and St-Louis takes his retirement at 40-41 or who knows when. But there's too much "if" haha The probabl that it could happen is still there though.
Definitely. At least it seems to be a rental. Better than nothing I guess. If Bergevin signs him this summer it doesn't look good. Anyway with Subban still unsigned they don't have room for a salary like Vanek. Except if he drops to 3.5-4 per year, which wil not happen.batdad wrote:Vanek will definitely help the Habs, but you were right to think he was small philou. He sure plays small.![]()

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
Even if Vanek is just a rental I think its a good move. The guy can score and gives Montreal a pretty decent top six. I don't think it puts them above Pittsburg or Boston but a healthy Price could take Montreal to the CF.philou21 wrote:

Also, I don't think they gave up very much. I've never been big on Collberg as a prospect and given the number of talented wingers Montreal has in their system, they can afford to let him go.

The only way to justify the Callahan-St_louis trade would be to win the cup. Anything less and it is a failed trade

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
All depends on the conditionals imho, If it becomes 2 first rounders then yes, anything but the cup is bad. If it becomes a 1st and a 2nd rounder then kinda bad. If Callahan re-signs with TBL and the 2nd rounder stays as a 2nd then the trade is fine.

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
As Manimal said, anything but a cup is a disappointment. The trade is bad for NYR unless they get that deep run, I don't why people are defending it.
-first, there is no guarantee they would lose Callahan in FA. Who said another team would give him the $6m for 7 years that he wanted? (and a team he wanted to go to)
-Second, St. Louis isn't a rental this year but he is def short term. I think it was MIlbury last night who said St. Louis could resign and be there for four years, um REALLY? at age 43? come on. They have him for this final push, then next year.
-Now take in the complicated pick situation
*Tampa gets NYR 2015 1st round pick
*Tampa gets NYR 2014 2nd Round Pick. IF NYR get to Eastern Conference final this becomes 1st round pick
*If Tampa resigns Callahan, NYR get Tampa 2015 second rounder and Tampa Gets NYR 2015 7th rounder
So even if NYR get to Eastern finals but don't win the cup they are out two #1's for a 39 year old.
Meanwhile Tampa gets a young B level player (he can play at A level but injuries at such I am saying B to avoid arguments) they can have more 10+ years and two first round draft picks which they could use to move around in draft.
St. Louis clearly had some deep personal problems and wanted OUT of Tampa, Tampa seems to have come out good in all of this for sure. However Rangers have put themselves in position where only a Cup win would pay off (since if they lose in cup finals they are still paying that extra #1)
edit: Forgot to mention with how cheap other guys ended up costing (Vanek, Graborik, Moulson, Erikkson) makes what NYR gave up seem even more overpaid.

Re: Official 13-14 NHL Regular Season Thread
St-Louis was looking so happy yesterday on the ice, like a new man haha If that's only because of the Olympic thing though....that's pathetic. I'm wondering if there's more to it.
