So you need an internet connection to play games on Steam? You can start steam in offline mode aswell so you don't need an internet connection once everything is installed and ready...
You don't really stop using steam per say when you buy games off of it. When you buy a game off steam and play it, it will connect to steam before opening. The beauty thing with steam is if you have more than 1 laptop, you can install steam on all of them and play all your games on as many computers you want. Using Offline Mode on a PC.
Please follow the instructions below to configure Offline Mode on your PC:
1. Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
2. Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the Library section (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
3. Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
4. Go to Steam > Settings to ensure the Don't save account credentials on this computer option is not selected
5. From the main Steam window, go to the Steam menu and select Go Offline
6. Click Restart in Offline Mode to restart Steam in Offline Mode

Luckily I don't have to do it until Monday, but all of this excitement has distracted me! To be honest, I wouldn't read too much into the numbers at this point. Like Archi said, EHM is quite a niche game, even outside of Steam. Also, don't forget how suddenly this all happened. Literally just a couple days ago, none of us had any idea that anything was happening with EHM. Not sure if there is an update on the stats at any point, but hopefully we can see bigger numbers as 1000 = what, 8-10K English.

It's a heck of a lot better than the eLicence system we had for EHM 2007. We were completely at their mercy when it came to reinstalling the game or if you forgot your licence code. Also, seeing as the game was no longer on sale. Steam is a far, far bigger organisation and I don't think there is the same risk there - also the game will always be on sale.
