How To Judge The Performance Of A Player?

Post by colinrsmall »

Hello everyone. I'm a bit new to this, so I am curious what attributes I should be looking at to get an overall idea of how good a player is. I know there's no overall attribute, but I'm looking through the current free agents to find some prospects to sign, and I can't tell if I should be signing them or not. I don't want to sign a player who looks promising only to find that he's outmatched playing in whatever league I place him in. Also, is there a potential attribute? Is it hidden? Do I have to scout players before seeing it?

EDIT: Also, what should I be looking for in staff? I'm looking at Brad Park. He has very high mental skills and very good judgement, so is he more inclined to be a coach? I'm really confused about what the attributes mean for staff.

Hey colin!

There's no Overall rating in EHM. There are two stats called Current Ability and Potential Ability (CA/PA) that are hidden. Scouting can gain you insight into what they probably are.

As for signing players, the quickest way to sort them is to go to Scouting -> Player Search -> Sort by Rep. NHL-level players are typically higher in reputation. As for a player to sign, it really depends on what you need. You can view and sort players by attributes. Look for players who are good across the board, or who have good mental attributes.

As for staff, it varies depending on desired role. Scouts and assistant GM should be good at predicting player ability and potential, while coaches should be good at coaching, tactics, and other things.

Thanks for all of the help! One last question: Are there options to set things such as scouting to AI control? I'm really clueless when it comes to scouting but I know it's important to do. I also don't really want to micromanage practicing, so is there an option for AI control for that too?

Team Practice: From the GM Menu (where your name is listed at the top of the screen) -> General Manager Options -> Set "Head Coach takes control of practice" to Yes.

Scouting: No auto settings I'm afraid. But you could just assign a couple of scouts to key leagues. From the GM Menu -> Scouting. You'll see a blue button with a drop-down menu entitled "Scouts" (just below the titlebar and near the right side of the screen). Select one of your scouts from here. The you'll see a button appear in the titlebar menu (just above the Scouts button) entitled "Assign Scout". This will obviously allow you to assign scouts. If you're coaching in the NHL then you could just assign scouts to scout the following (assign each of them Permanently to the chosen area):
  • League: National Hockey League
  • Next opposition
  • Youth players
  • NHL Entry Draft
  • Nation: Canada (and any of the other nations - all of them if you can)
It's quick and dirty, but at least it gets them set up for you and you don't need to worry about it again.

There is a science to it (e.g. you would assign a scout with a high Judging Player Potential attribute to scout the NHL Draft), but if you're just starting out then don't worry about it too much.

A players rating is depicted somewhat by his performance score. You can think of it as a rating that EA might give out at the end of a season (although it's very much different). A player with a 6.50 rating shouldn't be in the league. 7.00 and up is good depending on pay and salary demand. These numbers are not hidden and are shown throughout the game for the players. You will start getting a feel for it in no time.

To get started you can always turn off Fog of War as well. That will allow you to not worry about scouting nearly as much if at all. Might help with the learning curve but it's not as fun that way so I wouldn't recommend it :)

Thanks for all the help! One thing I noticed is that even when practice is set to head coach it only assigns general to everyone (which may be intended, I just assumed that you would want to specifically train players). And I apologize again for asking noobish questions but what's form? I looked through the game manual and I didn't see anything about it.

Any one knows if the Performance Rating has been adjusted?

(In EHM2007 defensive player (forwards) had lower PR, it was base on offensive performance)

I've heard it mentioned, that defensive efforts would now count more to the player's form / performance.
