Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
So I just watched the Hobbit and I fell in love with Dwarves and Elves, and this is going to sound absolutely ridiculous, but I want to toy with the idea of species with their own genetic disposition being editable. For example Dwarves being short, but strong, and living for hundreds of years, and Evles being immortal. It would be cool to play in the North American leagues for years, being the best of the best, only to make the "Galactic Champions League" or something of the ridiculous sort, only to be crushed by Elvish dicipline
Obviously low on the priority list, but this is the stuff I think of
On a smaller scale, this would apply to individual races of human beings, as well as their genders. For example the Average Canadian Male being 174 CM, and the average American Female being 164cm, etc.
Im just thinking of player generation methods at the moment

Just a little market research
Do you guys like every player in the game being a re-generation of another player?
or would you prefer the idea of every player being a product of their countries facilities and reputation?

Personally, I've always been a fan of the latter. Even if it's a very long and slow process to see a change, it's still fun knowing that it's possible if you try.

The regeneration system (like we see in EHM) is a "last gen" type of thing. A more dynamic system is ideally better, although more complex and difficult to program I would think.

Agree with Dave and Stinson. That way you can maybe see some country developing real good hockey players often when before they had like 1 good player each 2-3 years or so. Much more realistic IMO.

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
I will definitly be looking at the dynamic system. My idea is for players to be generated by "intake" teams, which will operate with teams that have them, north american pro teams wont have them, but they will be either an open tryout, a league tryout + draft, or an invitation from a pool to simulate real life where kids either sign up for their local u16 team, tryout for bantam, or are brought in by a head of youth development like in football
and dont worry about the difficultly of programming. my programmer can handle anything and im not worried about giving him difficult tasks because I hate him
okay the programmer is me... but still

In that case... Would it be possible to create the entire junior system of ice hockey, starting from around the age of 6? Of course, the youngest leagues would not have to be playable, but the ability to scout players while managing a C-junior club could be really interesting.

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
Im actually playing on that. I definitely want highschool hockey to be playable. But it will obviously have to be lower priority than professional leagues. The first version is only going to have the one professional league, then the next will add a second north american professional league and maybe a european professional league, and eventually go down and down until either I dont want to go any further, or the system cant handle it

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
Im going to try and design all of the editing based on what people want to do
for example, if someone comes to me and says "I want to be able to make a draft only for goalies", I will program the editor to allow for the drafting of goalies only.
Anyother example, nino is making atom aged players in his database, so I will allow for the inclusion of players younger than the minimum even if the min age is 0 and allow them to come into the game as a "generated player" when they're old enough

hahaha as soon as I've seen that you wrote something here, I had no doubts it would be because of the new EHM announcement.

Not gonna lie, I hate how my game dev degreed turned me off for games. Like I see a great game come out and say "god I cant wait to play it", but there is always the rear third of my brain saying "Lindros, I wanted to make that game, thanks for nothing"

I should also mention that yes, im going to keep development. It's just going to get harder and harder to get noticed and I dont think you guys have any reason to buy it anymore now that theres actual competition for EHM and FM, but I didnt go to school for 6 years to not make games

My hat off to you.
If I had the skill to write my own hockey management sim then I'd still do it just for fun. Unfortunately, I don't have your level of skill and so I just stick to writing database editors instead!

Maybe database editors are your calling
I have no idea how to monetize that however

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
I'm playing with the idea all the time, although I would surely do it just for fun and probably as open source. Obviously I would keep my job and so I would be very limited with time I could spend on it. And then it would very probably be way worse than the other hockey sim games on the market (EHM/FHM) so I would still probably play these instead of my own gamearchibalduk wrote:My hat off to you.

With what I've read here, I can't wait for this game of yours to reach a developmental level that we can actually get our hands on.
I for one will be waiting anxiously.
There's nothing wrong with having two games (EHM and Black Karma) on one PC.
As Steve Matchett would say, "Go on, son!"

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
Definitly trying to work on it. I have to work on a semi related practicum first, and Im playing around with Football Managers editor to better learn what I should be doing for editability.
What I would like to do is get you guys to pay for the engine, then make your own databases off that and do whatever you want with it. Obviously ill be making my own databases to ship with the game, but the core of it will be concentrating on the editing. Hopefully thats where I can beat EHM; They'll have the better game, but mine will have the better sandbox, two different experiences that can co-exist within the same fanbase
Not that im trying to compete with Sports interactive and or their lawyers

Re: Black Karma Hockey Manager
Im working really hard on my practicum, so I dont really have the willpower or brain capacity or time to do anything else programming related
but ive been thinking of how to make money on ads in this game, specifically allowing companys to pay me money to put their ads in the game.
At least in general
I like the idea from a hockey stand point, there are ads on the boards, the guys who make the jerseys get their logo on the back, the guys who make the equipment put their brand name on it somewhere, and sometimes companies buy the arenas teams play it, and some sponsor the team outright and put their name on the butt of the players
So in practice, I would need a way to do while getting past a few problems. For example, the base databases are entirely fictional, and it might be jarring to see real world sponsors on the boards in the arena. It would also be impossible for a company to sponsor a team on another planet when earth doesnt exist, like some football manager databases.
Obviously I would let ads be tied to cities, so if you take Canada out of the world for whatever reason, you wouldnt see my companies ads. And I would let companies pay for their "reputation", so if The Blue Line gives me 5 bucks a month they get on the butt of a jersey in Manchester, but if they give me like 5 billion they would get ads literally everywhere, to simulate bigger companies sponsoring teams in other countries when they're massive as opposed to the local pizza place having a board ad in Langley minor midget. but I also want to allow users to create their own brands in game, so they could see the "Manimal Sponsored Manimals of Manimal" play in the "Manimal Arena of Archi City" and have the "Batdad batbad jersey company" buy the jersey deal of the "Unknown User Hockey League"
So much to think about and I dont have any concrete answers
