Isn't it because salary amounts can vary for different years in a contract? i.e. a two year contract of $2 million the first year and $4 million the second year would result in a $3 million cap hit for both years (and in year 1 the salary would be lower than the cap hit)
I thought that, but what if it's a one year contract, or the cap hit is lower than either year? Like you say, a 2 mil and 4 mil 2 year would be 3 mil hit per year (plus signing bonus) - what I've seen is 11 mil + 10 mill = 10 mil cap hit. Or single year contracts of 11 mil with a 10 mil cap hit.
I can post some screenshots tonight but the math seems way off.
Make sure they're actually 1 year contracts, and not the last year of a multi year contract (I honestly don't recall players signing many 1 year contracts in EHM05/EHM07 but maybe EHM:EA is different)

Unfortunately they are UFAs signed for 1-2 years, as you can see below Pacioretty signed from free agency 2023 on one year deal for 23-24, cap hit nearly 1 mil less than salary, and that's without any signing bonus.

This isn't the only one either, in fact it seems to be all over the place. Leafs are saving nearly 3 mil this way, and Taylor Hall's last contract year at the Oilers is 11.6 but only 10.5 against the cap - that would have to be a large jump across his contract to average 10.5, and I don't see the AI doing this a lot, they tend to spread the cost evenly across the years (except when decreasing with age) but the average would still have to be higher than the lowest amount - now whilst I know for sure some are new contracts (as I tried to sign them in the summer) I obviously know every players contract lengths and salaries, but it doesn't seem right to me.

Taking Okposo as an example, he signed in 2022, so he's played 1 year of this contract that I can't see - but to make that cap average work he'd have to have been on 7.6 in 22-23, up to 9 mil for 23-24? Plus signing fee... I've never seen an AI contract like that, and why the 2nd year increase at 36? The extension year adds up though!

Looks like a pretty major bug to me. :/

Post it on SI, upload your game and I'm sure Riz will look into it :-)

Have you done any editing to the game? I ask because another recent concern turned out to be user induced via trying to hex edit the Salary Cap

I've seen this many times before even on EHM 2007. I always just brushed it as one of those little bugs that stayed with the game, but now that EHM is actively being worked on again it'll be nice to iron this bug out.

No editing at all. I'll have to set up a new email account to set up a new SI account unless they fix the password reset issue.

I suspect it'll be best to set up a new account (the password reset issue has been in existence since EHM:EA was released.....it's why I went from Nino33 to Nino-33)

Given EHM is actually in development again (and biweekly updates!) Woo Hoo! sharing such info/saved games with Riz can really make a difference!

I just wish SI would make it easier to help them, rather than faffing about creating a fake email account to create a login I probably won't use very often if at all after a few more months (then doing it again next time I buy one of their games).

I think the password reset issue has been there for years as I've already had multiple accounts in the past - and they don't even send an email confirming the username/sign up or anything! Think I'm starting to remember why I stopped buying FM as it was too much hassle posting about all the bugs at the start of each season. Very poor. Riz needs to have a word ;)

Sorry you find it so difficult/bothersome...I spend hundreds of hours a year helping through editing (I think of it as helping the community as opposed to helping SI), and while I find some things annoying sometimes I can't imagine not buying EHM over such things

^ sorry that was more a dig at how many bugs FM had and reports it needed(which mostly didn't get resolved/acted on) and needing a new account each year.
It's like "hey SI, do you want our help or not?". And I'm a darn fine bug finder, they need me. :-p

I'd like to keep buying EHM though and for the bugs to get fixed, it's a bit different as I know it doesn't have the resource behind it, but still frustrating, there could be lots more people that return to the games/forums that can't post/help and it is a hassle. I guess the SI email server doesn't work.
None of this is in any way a criticism of Riz though, hopefully he understands.

I feel that the salary is too based on the way too slow to change "reputation" of the players. A guy scoring 35 goals in a going to be FA season should ask for 35 goal money, not the 15 goals from the seasons before. As of now you can easily lock up players way cheap for about four season just as they are taking off. This would make the cap way harder to manage.
