Here's my attempt, going to try playing a pretty physical game. Hope it works and that my PK units do a good job when it doesn't.

My team is looking pretty good after the preseason and first couple of games but I'm wondering if it would've been smarter to start off by drafting the top prospects and maybe missing out on a few veteran players. It seems that once the season is about to start you see lots of quality players getting waived or made available for very little. Draft cheaper players with a lot of potential and keep lots of cap room available.
BTW, I noticed that in the later rounds of the draft, I was stuck drafting blind for the most part. Because of the "Fog of War" I wasn't able to see the ratings of most of the players left available. I had to go with what my coach, GM, or scout said... or maybe hope I spotted some guys I might be familiar with from other games.

Yeah, I figured that one out towards the end of the draft. It only helps if you can see that player's ratings though. If the "Fog of War" is enabled and you set your filters (like I almost always do) to show you only players with at least a 10 in Determination and Workrate, they won't suggest a player that has those ratings but they're "fogged"... will they?timmy_t wrote:Did you know that you can have them only suggest players that you have set the filters for? It can help tremendously...
The way my draft worked out, I've got a very good NHL roster (even though I was still ranked in the 20's in the Season Preview), a killer AHL roster (no ECHL affiliate for the Bruins), and hardly anything for unsigned prospects. I've still got to figure out what tactics are going to work best for this team. I'm going to OT in too many games still. I did notice that a lot of teams have players that they had pre-draft. The Red Wings have Zetterberg. Stuff like that. I also saw Luongo return to Florida. I hope he didn't sell his house!

Since things have changed in the game a little bit I'm wondering which salary figure are we supposed to record on the Challenge Recording Sheet? I know it was said that there would be no bonus for salary since we're all operating under the cap with maximum budgets... but I want to make sure I have it recorded if we still need to show it. Any idea? I'm going to post my results for the 1st 20 games minus the salaries and if I need to, I'll add that later.

Nah you really don't have to worry about the salary recording for this one; we won't be asking for verification of it since the only way to go over in our situation would be to top the Cap at which point you wouldn't be able to continue on with your game
And I'll finalize what we'll do about that for our first 'standard' Challenge.
I'd like to point out to everyone the badass rework of our Announcements Box by Archi
all the rules threads are now accessable via those links at the bottom
Also, people should grab the new update of the Excel Recording sheet that now includes a slot for recording your playoff wins with the 60-82 game set

This has been crazy, I get 8 - 9 penalties every game which absolutely needs to stop, I have great penalty killing but it hinders the the time I could be getting goals. Shannahan was hurt early in the season for 10 days, and Ovechkin got suspended, which I think was the cause of me losing a game 7 - 2. Dominik Hasek started the first 10 games with around a .938 save percentage but has dropped to a 9.15, which is still pretty good. Fredrik Modin is on my 2nd line and is tied for 2nd in goal scoring, I want to send him to the first line but he plays Center and Saku Koivu is my first line center and hes tied for first with assists, along with Mark Recci (also on my 2nd line).
My salary is only 37,195,000 with Saku Koivu getting the most at 4,750,000 mil a year.
The only way this season can get bad is if the same thing happens to Hasek that happened to Chelios, gets extremely bad extremely fast.

My bad, Modin is a left winger, so I can't replace him because of Ovechkin, I feel stupid nowBBFan417 wrote:This has been crazy, I get 8 - 9 penalties every game which absolutely needs to stop, I have great penalty killing but it hinders the the time I could be getting goals. Montreal has had decent 20 game stretch, 23 pts and 7th in conference. Offense han not been producing as one would hope for, especiallly PP has not been working. Luckily defense has been tight and Kipper has been good in net.
+ Koivu & Satan have played good point/game pace
+ Jussi Jokinen & Jarkko Immonen have been good also in second line
+ DMan have all been solid defensively
- Havlat is close to be traded, although he lead in team assists. 4 goals in 20 games is not acceptable for 6,000,000$/y
- Gionta has been also little dissapointing, 8 goals in 16 games.
- Markov has been dissappointing offensively, but has been solid in defense.
- Madden has only 1 point. Should produce some even in his defensive role.
Hoping to get offence producing more in next 20 game period but also maintain working defense.

My Sabres
11-4-3, 1st. Really want to play my other 2 in the first 20 games, but have stuff to do. Salary total is around 39.6 mill...so I can still pick someone up..
Lineup of:
Modin-Forsberg-Cheechoo
Fedotenko-Morrison-Parrish
Betts-Drury-S. Kapanen
Boogard-Laich-Pomminville
Gaborovsky (3 goals 2 assists in his 5 games)
Ohlund-Regehr
Seidenberg-Van Ryn
Kloucek-Kwiatkowski
M.A. Bergeron Beauchemin (last 2 in and out for those who play like rubbish--really I typed rubbish!)
Kipper
B. Johnson
So yeah, my PP and PK both suck (14th and 22nd)...ummm with this team? Forsberg can't score, Cheechoo can't score, and Drury and Betts can't check or score...Cripes. Yet some how I am winning. I am causing turnovers, and not giving away the puck much. Oh and other than the last game I played against Ottawa (3-2 loss) I have been dramatically outshooting the other team...in the 50's to high teens low 20s. Ottawa game...Ott 61 Buf 15 or something stupid. One game vs Boston I outshot them 71-12. I think I won 3-2.Kipper sucks.
Lindy Ruff et all suck as coaches---My guys are dropping off...I wish the Canucks would fire their coaches...all the guys on that team went up in attributes for some reason...even though the coaches look like they suck. Using same practice routines in Buffalo...and nothing is getting better.
May trade Forsberg for Naslund if the league will let me. Make Mo my #1 with Markus..I know they work well together.
Traded Pisani for Ortmeyer straight up..big salary dump. Problem is had not noticed the foolish Blues had Ortmeyer in Peoria...so yeah to get him up to the big club RECALL WAIVERS would be needed, and every team in the NHL wants to trade for him...So I may have to deal him away...Oh well.

Just posted stats for my first 20 games, here's some thoughts about my team.

* My first line, Modin-Lecavalier-Shanahan, is tearing things up.
* My first ten games were 9 wins 1 loss (first game of the season, allowed two shorthanded goals
).
* My PP is acctually decent (6th in league), I'm struggling with that part in my other game.
* Axelsson, Halpern, Maltby are performing horribly and I was depending on them to form solid PK and cause trouble for the first line of my opponents. Thankfully we are not shorthanded that often.
* Second lowest Times Shorthanded in the league with a physical aggressive playing style. Most guys who get penalized seem to take a member of the opposing team with them to the box.
* Lundqvist is terribly inconsistent. He lets in three goals in six shots one game and saves 28/29 the next.
I acctually put Lundqvist on the block and started Osgood instead (who has been performing solidly when he has replaced Lundqvist after events such as the three goals in six shots mentioned above) with Bacashihua called up as backup. First game out Osgood gets injured at the start of the third period and Bac gets destroyed in goal. So obviously Bac is not good enough for a backup and if I get rid of Lundqvist I need to find a replacement of atleast Osgood quality. Right now I've taken him off the block awaiting Osgood's return and will evaluate his play during that time.

I can't really say much about the next 40 games. Everyones been playing extremely well considering Ovechkin, and Koivu, and Shanahan, and Ohlund, and Zubov, and finally Hasek are getting hurt. Ovechkin has had 3 consectutive 5-point games and Shanahan has has 3 hat tricks in the last 5 games. Hasek has been doing amazing but got hurt in our 40th game.

Here's my team, I was going for young and cheap. I think I made out semi-OK in that regard.

I've got $11M in cap room, so I guess I have some room to wheel and deal a bit.

Ovechkin has really exploded I don't know why he has become so good so fast but Modin has slowed down a lot also. I got Shawn Bates in a trade and hes gotten around a point a game which is good for a 2nd line. We're slowing down a lot though and getting close to losing almost every game.
I realized I was recording wrong, as I thought Total Points meant Total points, but I will take the consequences with no complaint

Kinda odd that the three healthy scratches are all current Habs.
