Salary Cap Crisis

Post by ryanr789 »

So in my Redwings save I'm like a month in and am having issues negotiating the salary cap. I can't reach the cap floor, and I can't seem to make a trade as any partner I find would not be able to trade a player with a big contract to me as it would make them fall through the cap floor. What are some ways to reach the cap floor that isnt like paying free agents that arent worth it a bunch of money

you need to find players that are 30+ with big contracts...... Usually they are on the downslope of their career and only get worse..... but it will get you to the cap floor...... You might be better the other way with the F/A's as you will overpay but they have some value in that they can fill gaps on your team....... Look at them as rentals for a year or two....

Sign a free agent to a 1 year deal that'll get you to the floor?

If I understand right- you're just paying the amount you're below the floor. So there's no real benefit of getting to the floor unless it improves your team.

I wouldn't worry too much, you'll just get fined most of the amount you're under the cap - depending on how far below it you are.

So the situation my Coyotes are in in the first season: Just above the cap, heading for the trade deadline. Looking to deal Erat since he's a FA after this season, I won't face any problems apart from fines of less than what I was actually paying Erat as I'm about $1.5 mil over the floor?

Unless they've changed it then yep. I spent several years under the cap by quite a distance with dealing Erat, Smithy, Doan retiring and I stocked up on young talent. The worst I got was fines of about 8 million for a season, and I'm pretty sure I was close to 13 million under the floor one year. It generally won't make a lot of difference though.

Sweet, that totally changes my trade deadline plan when I'm right on the doorstep of the deadline. Can't have changed since I just noticed that the Flames are currently only in the $40 mils for salary.

To be honest it doesn't make a huge difference - if you lose money in a season the board will inject the exact amount of cash required to balance the books. If you gain money, they pay the exact profit out in dividends.
I've never had my wage budget change or the amount I can offer in 13 years. So whether you stay below the floor or sign short term deals for players and trade or waive them it doesn't matter too much.

That may be true in the NHL (can't say for sure that it is or isn't), but in Finland I've had my wage budget increase significantly from season to the next.

Does Finland have a salary cap structure?
I only know about the NHL and I assume the budget staying the same is due to the cap staying the same, otherwise you'd just have huge pointless contracts in the AHL.
Any leagues without a cap I'd expect will see a budget increase, but if you have a cap and see an increase then you're doing bloody well!

Playing as the NJ Devils my budget increased from 62M in the first season to 71 in the second season, my team was the 8th seed in the Eastern Conf.

Not in the lowest two leagues. Not sure about the top.

In my 2006 game (Pens) the budget went up significantly year to year (it was near the floor the first year, and now after two very good seasons its near the cap.)

Nope, no cap. Just pointing out that the budget may change.

No worries - it should work pretty well for those kind of leagues as the more successful you are the more you can spend!

I must have been lucky, I don't recall my player budget ever being anything other than about 80 million, even after 10 cups in a row. Maybe it was less the first year when I tanked and shot up without me noticing.

I had the exact same result with the Devils in my first season, and got the same budget year 2, boosted to 71.
