NHL/AHL/ECHL mugshots?

Post by ElQuapo »

Is anyone else than me interested in mugshots (picture packs) for these leagues? I know we have the actionshots which are great, but personally I like mugshots better. I have been searching the various EHM sites, but there don't seem to be any to download.

I have started making some myself, but it just takes an awful lot of time (about 1 hour pr. NHL team including AHL/ECHL affiliates). Is anyone interested in helping out and together creating a pack for all NHL teams including their affiliates?

I have made the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals until now.

It won't be possible to create pictures for all NHL players, as the NHL clubs don't all have very good pictures available on their sites (this is the case for the Capitals for example), but almost all the AHL/ECHL affiliates have good quality pictures.

Pictures should be good quality and look like passport photos. That is, the face should fill most of the picture, exactly how much depends on the quality of the picture one can find as rezising upwards really kills the quality. If no good pictures can be found, then better none than a bad one (the ones included in the game mostly look like Adam Oates IMHO.)

Anyway, is anyone interested? And what teams would you like to do if interested? :)

Interested, yes, but don't have softwares to do so, and not enough time as i'm already working on the guide and on some news items.

However, it's an interesting project and i hope you'll find someone to help you for it!

Thanks for the support :)

I hope someone will be interested, as it will be almost impossible to do it one man.

I have done two teams now including their affiliates. I don't know if I should release them as I go along or wait and create larger packs.

Hi, thanks for the help. Getting the pictures is not that much work though, I can do that fairly quickly and it is actually easier to do it as part of the bigger process of naming the files. It is mostly the cutting and rezising of the pictures and naming the files correctly to get shown in the game, that takes time.

I will probably do at least the Islanders, Predators and Canucks also.

So these are the teams done (or taken) :

New York Rangers (Hartford Wolf Pack, Charlotte Checkers)
Washington Capitals (Hearshey Bears, South Carolina Stingrays)
Nashville Predators (Milwaukee Admirals, Rockford Icehawks, New Mexico Scorpions)
New York Islanders (Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Pensacola Ice Pilots)
Vancouver Canucks (Manitoba Moose, Victoria Salmon Kings)

Anything else is up for grabs ;)

Boston Bruins (Providence Bruins, Long Beach Ice Dogs)
Chicago Blackhawks (Norfolk Admirals, Toledo Storm)
Toronto Maple Leafs (Toronto Marlies, Columbia Inferno)

I will probably do the Philadelphia Flyers today, but then I won't have as much time. Only reason I've gotten so much done is because I have been at home sick for a couple of days

Anyone is still welcome to join in :)

Ok, so I'm still sick, which sucks, but I guess it is good enough for the EHM community, because it means I have gotten even more teams finished. :)

Teams now in the face-pack :

Anaheim Ducks (Portland Pirates, Augusta Lynx)
Boston Bruins (Providence Bruins, Long Beach Ice Dogs)
Chicago Blackhawks (Norfolk Admirals, Toledo Storm)
Edmonton Oilers (Stockton Thunder)
Nashville Predators (Milwaukee Admirals, Rockford IceHogs, New Mexico Scorpions)
Minnesotta Wild (Houston Aeros, Texas Wildcatters)
New York Islanders (Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Pensacola Ice Pilots)
New York Rangers (Hartford Wolf Pack, Charlotte Checkers)
Philadelphia Flyers (Philadelphia Phantoms, Trenton Titans)
Tampa Bay Lightning (Springfield Falcons, Johnstown Chiefs)
Toronto Maple Leafs (Toronto Marlies, Columbia Inferno)
Vancouver Canucks (Manitoba Moose, Victoria Salmon Kings)
Washington Capitals (Hearshey Bears, South Carolina Stingrays)

Another member from the SI forums has agreed to create the St. Louis Blues and affiliates, and I have asked for permission to include packs for Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres from another site.

So things are coming along nicely. I will probably release the pack after the unfaking update is out, as I will make it compatible with the unfaking because of the UHL and College players.

I can help out with some teams. Say.... Phoenix, Montreal, Dallas and... New Jersey.

Just a quick question; is this picture to small: Image

Hi, thanks for the interest.

I might already have Dallas. It depends on if I can get permission to use a pack someone else has made.

Unfortunately those pictures are to small. I have tried the Canadiens ones myself, and they look very bad when resized up to 157x200 pixels. The ones on New Jerseys website are also very poor. I don't know if you have some others that would work?

Phoenix Coyotes have some great ones on their site :
http://www.phoenixcoyotes.com/team/player_page.php

And their affiliates also have good pictures available :

San Antonio Rampage:
http://stats.theahl.com/stats/roster.ph ... eam_id=331 (click on "enlarge" to get the good ones)

Phoenix Roadrunners :
http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/roster.php (click on "enlarge" to get the good ones)

Laredo Bucks :
http://laredobucks.com/team/

Would you be interested in doing Phoenix and the 3 affiliates?

If you are interested, pictures should be in jpg format.

157x200 pixels
When resizing, remember to keep the correct aspect-ratio so players don't look to fat or thin :)

Filenames should be :
Firstname_Surname_DAY_MONTH_YEAR.jpg (for example Ed_Belfour_21_4_1965.jpg)

Oh, by the way. Here are some examples of how I am trying to get the pictures to look :

If no good pictures are available, like pictures that need to be resized upwards to much etc. then personally I would rather not have a picture in my game than a bad one, so that is the "philosophy" behind the pack :)

Sounds great

Do you know any good places to get pictures for NHL teams other than their official sites? I haven't been able to find other places exept wikipedia, but those pictures are mostly old, and I would like to only use pictures from 2006.

No sorry. I saw now that you have had a specifik wide/length, already done everything without taking notice of the 157x200 pixels-thing.

I only have paint so I have changed them back and forth, putting them in the game etc.

Here are some results:

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/2096/taffefa4.png
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6378/liamqh9.png
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/15/seastrommj7.png

The first one, it's okey length but lacks some width, but if I'll change that they'll look fat.
The second one, seems perfect :joy:
The third one, seems lacking both width and length so maby I shall make them slightly bigger?

EDIT: Okey now I got it. I made Sjöström(NHL)-pictures 14% larger and they are now 171X201 Pixels. You can't tell the difference when in game and it looks real good

Hehe forget my last post I managed to get all photos to 157x200 Pixels, give or take 1 on some of them =D>

Phoenix with all their affilates are done now, but there are some players on their homepage that doesn't exists in my current game:

Kris McPhee - 17.5.1980 - Labrie (or something?)
Serge Dube 13.8.1979 - Same team
Steve Weidlich 23.1.1981 - Same
Aaron Slattengren 28.12.1981 - Phoenix RoadRunners
Brian Yandle 29.5.1983 - Same
Yannick Tifu 12.10.1984 - Same

I can't find them but I have their pictures.

I gav Columbus a shot and I am not sure about the quality of the pictures. My eyes are itching from staring at the screen way to many hours so I can't really judge.

Okey, Columbus and their affilates are done.

I have checked off all teams (everyone lacking good pictures...) except Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Florida (Florida I am doing right now, pretty decent pictures).

I've done Florida now and half of Buffalo so you can put that on the list. Maby I'll finish it later tonight as I'm off to bed now.

Cheers!

Hi, these three all look great quality. I would prefer them to be 157x200 though, as all the others are, and I am kind of a perfectionist when it comes to keeping a standard. :dunno:

This one is too grainy in my opinion. They look like the ones I tried to do with Toronto but ended up throwing away.

It's kind of annoying that the NHL teams have so poor quality images availabe. One almost thinks they are trying to stop people from doing packs like these :thdn:

Thanks alot for all the work.

I have also done Florida. My fault for not telling

I should probably update the list so it is clear.

Buffalo and Dallas might already be done. I have found some exellent packs on the net with them and have asked the author if I can use them, but he hasn't answered just yet. But no sense in doing them until we know if it is nessesary :)

Here is the done list :

Anaheim Ducks (Portland Pirates, Augusta Lynx)
Boston Bruins (Providence Bruins, Long Beach Ice Dogs)
Chicago Blackhawks (Norfolk Admirals, Toledo Storm)
Edmonton Oilers (Stockton Thunder)
Florida Panthers (Rochester Americans, Florida Everblades)
Minnesotta Wild (Houston Aeros, Texas Wildcatters)
Nashville Predators (Milwaukee Admirals, Rockford IceHogs, New Mexico Scorpions)
New York Islanders (Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Pensacola Ice Pilots)
New York Rangers (Hartford Wolf Pack, Charlotte Checkers)
Philadelphia Flyers (Philadelphia Phantoms, Trenton Titans)
Tampa Bay Lightning (Springfield Falcons, Johnstown Chiefs)
Toronto Maple Leafs (Toronto Marlies, Columbia Inferno)
Vancouver Canucks (Manitoba Moose, Victoria Salmon Kings)
Washington Capitals (Hearshey Bears, South Carolina Stingrays)

Columbus and affiliates
Buffalo?
Dallas?
St. Louis (another member at the SI forums has agreed to do them)

On top of these I have done a few unaffiliated teams :
Memphis RiverKings (CHL)
Bakersfield Condors (ECHL)

BTW, if there are players which you have pictures for, but can't find in the database, just include them anyway. They are probably faked and will be added in the unfaking update.

Are you also doing the teams prospects when they are available by the way?

I tried doing Syracuse and Daytona but Daytona had awful pictures and here's the result with Syracuse: Image

Looks great.

Just to be sure - you are creating them as JPG and not PNG?

All of mine are JPG and they don't take up as much space :)

You'll notice the sources problems the further you get away from the NHL... and while not applicable to your project I realize; this is why learning from source searches last year we designed the 07 card template to have one standard background (the ice) and three different main sizes for pictures to compensate. 'Rougher' pics will look better at smaller sizes.

So while you aren't doing a card style you might still want to consider creating a common background image giving your ideal size a border of say 5 pixels then you could use that same background for pictures that will look better smaller. That way the set will still have a common element to them and it will look planned instead of "Why are some of the pictures different sizes?". ;) If you don't want to use say a grey/blue gradient or soemthing feel free to grab my ice background for the template to use. I think having the patterned background makes it look more "planned" than "oh they couldn't get them all in one size so they added a blue border" 8-)

Otherwise you'll have issues past the NHL sets. Also make sure you are maintaining your 'aspect ratios' when resizing/reducing pictures so that they don't look stretched out or scrunched in one direction of the other.
