Ottawa 1970

Post by stone169 »

So I've decided to give this another shot after a few years away from the blogs.

I've changed the dates on the rosters so that I'll have a start date of 1970. I'm using randomized details and had a starting draft to start the season. Now on to my Ottawa Senators season.

With training camp out of the way, it looks as though the biggest issue I will need to deal with is goaltending. After Jean-Francois Turcotte, I don't seem to have anyone. The Sens played a lot of games in the pre-season, more than I would like. At least they finished with a win.

Overall we went 6-3-3, scoring 35 goals and allowing 30. The PP sputtered, but the PK was good and we didn't seem to take too many penalties. So that was a bonuse. Hopefully that trend continues in the regular season. If I can improve the PP, then this will translate into a few more wins for the team.

Signed 4 players out of training camp:

Alf Nordlander, a goalie prospect of mine. He had a pretty good preseason, going 2-1-0 with a GAA of 2 and a SV% of .933. He's a couple of years away, but he'll get time down in Bingo to develop.

Matus Miklik, a big defensive prospect of mine. At 6'4" and 200lbs, he still has a bit more growing to do. The big Slovakian will be a bit of a project, but I'm looking forward to seeing how he develops. I'm hoping patience pays off with this kid.

Riley Welsh, another big winger. At 6'4", 205lbs, this 19 year old will only get bigger. He's another player that won't be stepping into the lineup right away and will need a bit of time down in the minors to develop. Should be a decent bottom-6 forward for me who can see some powerplay time and maybe see a bit of time in the top-6 if the need arises. The biggest concern right now surrounding this kid is his injury history. That will be something that we'll have to look out for.

Per-Olof Tenggren. The only invite to training camp to play himself into a contract. He's a bottom-6 guy that can step in right away. Great penalty killer, with a bit of an offensive side. I could use him right now. The only problem is, I won't get him until next season.

Season Opener lineup:

Marc Dorantes - Grayson Ste-Marie - Igor Parker
Christopher Phaneuf - Destry Crouch - Mihkel McIvor
William Bly - Etienne Lavigne - Anderson Langlais
Joey Price - Mike Beleskey - Charlie Mullen

Peter Wright - Jiri Kral
Kegan Low - Brock Baldwin
Lionel Ritchie - Esa Vartiainen

Jean-Francois Turcotte
Creighton Mondou

Just a very minor trade to talk about. The Ottawa Senators traded the rights to center, Waltteri Pelkonen, to the Anaheim Ducks for a 3rd round pick in the 1971 draft. Waltteri is an offensive playmaking center from Kuopio Finland, currently playing with CSKA Moscow in the KHL. The Sens tried to sign him, but were unable to come to terms. Instead they managed to come to terms on a trade with Anaheim.

In a statement today after the trade was made Senators GM said "We were hoping to bring Waltteri to Ottawa. We really felt that he could play for us right away and help out with our offense. Unfortunately we couldn't come to a deal with him. Anaheim expressed interest and a deal was made."

Good month of October for the Ottawa Senators. Finished the month 7-2-2 and are currently sitting 3rd in the conference. They scored 27 goals (2.45/game) and allowed 22 (2/game). The PP could be better as it's only sitting at 14.6%, but it's still early. The PK could be better as well with it sitting at 82.4%.

A couple of players to watch right now:

Kegan Low (D) 2-4-6 +6
Igor Parker (RW) 7-2-9 +5
Grayson Ste-Marie (C) 2-6-8 +3

Surprisingly Creighton Mondou has won NHL Player of the Month for October. It looks like the veteran has managed to find his rhythm going 3-0-0, considering he went 0-4-0 in the pre-season.

December 1st, 1970

The team struggled a bit in the month of November, but still played above .500. The Senators went 6-4-2 and dropping to 6th in the conference. They scored 28 goals (2.33/game), which is a bit concerning. Although in all fairness Igor Parker (my leading goal scorer with 9 goals) had to rest for a couple of games. The team only allowed 20 goals (1.67/game), which is a huge improvement. The PP is struggling at 14.04% and I'll have to figure something out to improve that. And the PK has dropped down to 81.08%.

Players to watch:

Jean-Francois Turcotte who is 8-3-1 with a 3 shutouts, a 1.82GAA, 2 shutouts, and .934SV%

Esa Vartiainen who leads the dmen on the team with 4-7-11 +3.

Christopher Phaneuf who is tied in the team lead in points with 4-12-16 +5.

Grayson Ste-Marie, tied with Phaneuf in points with 4-12-16 +7.

Jean-Francois Turcotte was named the NHL Best Defensive Player of the Month.

When asked about the previous month, the GM had this to say..."Yeah, we seemed to struggle with putting the puck in the net. We've been very happy with our defensive play and both J.F. and Mondou have been fantastic for us. We know that special teams could be better. I spoke with Kevin (HC) and asked him what he needs to improve both areas, and he told me that he doesn't need anything. He'll be trying some new things to get both the PP and the PK going and we're hoping to see some improvement. As for the team, right now we feel that we have the necessary group to get us to the playoffs and there is no pressing urgency to make any changes."
