I don't know...at the same time I feel it has worked when I have targeted certain side (glove/blocker), but low/high feels odd to me.

If a goalie has low rebound control, am I right in thinking about shooting low? I feel like that would be harder to control or am I wrong and should target one of his weak sides?
I don't think the targeting works properly - If you check the shot chart in a game, virtually every goal is in the middle of the net anyway. It's like all goalies have a bigger 5-hole than Courtney Love. But they cover the corners exceptionally well.
The issue with the shot chart, from my experience, is that it does not show where the puck went past the goalie. But rather one of the following:
- Where the puck passes into the net.
- Where the puck hits the back of the net.

Since like 60% of all goals in EHM (in my limited experience) is from the cross-crease one-timer onto a randomly unmarked player, cause all defenders have the "play like you're in peewee" option ticked. And this means the shot will come in at an angle, so when it passes the goalie it might very well be low/5hole/something else. But due to the angle of the shot, by the time it actually "registers" on the shot chart the puck will be in the middle of the goal.

The second most common canned goal that makes absolutely no sense is what I like to call the "hax goal", which is when there is an offensive zone face off that goes to the board side defenseman who (completely regardless of if he has 3 slapshot) will one-time it at the spead of light along the ice and score. Again, due to the angle the shot comes in at it will always (almost) register as being dead center in the goal, even though it probably wasn't when it actually passed the goalie.

Since these two goals are (at least in Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan, and lower english leagues) about 80-90% of all goals you will get a very misleading result from the shot chart.

P.S. In response to the guy asking how to make your players not suck the last 2 minutes of a game. The answer is: You probably can't.
Let me explain; when there are 2 minutes left, due to incompetence in either programming, or planning of the match engine. Both teams will go into "kill the clock"-mode. It will not check who is leading/tied/anything. It just automatically does, causing all players to just waste as much time as humanly possible. Your only real hope to catch up if you're behind is to wait for your team to hopefully dump the puck onto their goalie and force an offensive face off, then you pull your goalie. The extra attacker won't actually do anything most of the time. But it seems like you get some kind of hidden boost to your players' offensive performance when you do. Cause the amount of previously mentioned "hax goals" gets just stupid. I've gotten back from 2 goals behind in 30 seconds from nothing but those dumbass face off goals that no goalie with a working set of eyes, under the age of about 85, would actually concede.

P.S2 On another note, has anyone found a way to stop your defensemen from being your opponents best playmakers? I swear to god the only way the "85% pass completion" my team has could be true is if you count the amount of flawless, on the tape, passes my defensemen give the opposition in the middle of the slot. Putting them on "very safe passing" obviously does absolutely nothing. Much like how changing the "dump the puck" setting has inverse scaling. As in they will actually dump the puck MORE in the situations where they shouldn't on "very rarely" than on "very often", they will however dump the puck less when they should dump it (boxplay). Actually apart from tempo/puck pressure/gap/shooting the settings don't seem to work, or at least not work as advertised.

P.S3 Has anyone else noticed how sometimes there will be an icing call even when your player dumps the puck AFTER going over the red line? Since dumping the puck is something your players will do completely regardless of your settings, and the leagues I play have automatic Icing (meaning you never ever want to dump the puck at ES) the fact that they keep getting automatic icings when they have crossed the red line with some margin, about half the time, makes it so you will concede so many of the aformentioned "hax goals" due to the game engine ignoring rulesets and tactical settings like it's going out of style. I've actually put the game on only showing key highlights because between the incorrect icing calls, my defenders passing the opponent and all the other nonsense in the 2D engine I was getting dangerously close to a rage induced stroke. And when you see all your players playing like they are completely incompetent it becomes so hard to judge their performance in the terms that the game recognizes. Cause when all defenders play horrendously on D in the 2D engine, how can you tell which one is actually doing poorly?

Guys, this may sound really idiotic but I need help on this. I read many articles on that, Guide coming first, yet I still have problems comprehending the whole idea of tactics in ice hockey. I am a football and FM fan so I am not stranger to this type of managerial stuff, yet I am to ice hockey tactics. In my country, ice hockey is almost non-existent, so when it comes to tactics and detailed explanations of what is what, I can't really find any source. In football, you can use over ten tactics with each player having a different role with subdivisions, for example while a midfielder is assigned to play box-to-box, the other one may become playmaker and I am all familiar with this stuff. However, in hockey, I am not. I just love and enjoy this sport, that's all.

The main problem for me about coaching an ice hockey team is that I feel useless while watching the game. Lines change very fast and are pre-set. All teams play with 3 forwards and 2 defenders, so there is no room to make tactical changes or substituting players either... How do you interfere with the game while it's being played? I mean, let's say your team conceded two goals in 10mins. In football, you may prefer giving one of your defensive players a more offensive role or simply change your tactic from 5-4-1 to 5-3-2. In hockey, how do you do stuff like that? The players on ice always changes. You always have two D and RW, LW with a center. What is your next move when you fall behind? Or, in a similar situation, let's say you already have a 2-goal advantage before last period. In this case, I'd prefer having my first liners being rested while goons and strong defensive lines keep it intact. But... How do I do this while the game is being played? How to say, "OK, you two lines play the rest of the game, our priority is just not conceding!" to my players?

I am about to go crazy because I just cannot find anything about this on web. For football tactics, you can even find books but when it comes to coaching a hockey team DURING A GAME, I am clueless. I know player types a little bit. I mean, I know a center is not just a center. But anyways, as you see, all is blurred for me at the moment. I picked Düsseldorfer EG to learn the game, made even a few transfers yet I feel like the computer is playing the game itself - I just make pre-game arrangements and then watch the game with my hands tied, able to do nothing.

Long story short, I am familiar with how hockey teams work but during the games I feel totally useless as I do not know what to do to intervene the game. How am I supposed to make tactical or player-based changes when nobody skates for more than 1min? :-(

The way a hockey coach would try to change the game mid-game are by increasing the play-time of a line, go to overload, instead of "normal. Hit more, be more aggressive. Shoot more. Or swap the lines: "these three guys don't seem to work well together, let's swap the second and first line centers" -- stuff like that. Watch your stats -- is the opponent shooting / hitting / something else way more than I am, and then counter this trend.

So for all the EHM vets i have a question related to the coaches i have.

2 of my coaches have a direct style of play. Mainly my head coach has that style. Two other coaches have no preferred style and one has a defensive style. My question is can i taylor my tactics to my coaches and will i get better results?

Also some of the coaches preferred tactics are pretty self explanatory but what is a direct style? I haven't been able to figure that out.

I want to ask you guys a question. How are your 3rd line doing in your game(s)?

I seem to never find a way to make that 3rd line good, it's like that line number is cursed in my game. I have, what I feel, a decent mix of offense and defense on that line currently. 1 strong 2 way guy, 1 very good playmaker and 1 insane finisher. They are horrible and the cause of like 90% of goals against. I've tried everything, playing a offensive minded game for that line, going all defense and like now with a good balance of everything really. How do you guys go about setting up that line? Are you setting instructions based on players strenghts, offensive, defensive...? Or is it just a cursed line in this game? ;)

If I move those guys up the lines they instantly start to produce. Line matching seems to have little to no effect for them either. Right now my top 6 is scoring at a ridiculous rate but the 3rd line is letting everything in and generating no/little offense and my 4th is a bit so-so but still better then the 3rd. 4th is mostly based on defense though, PK/shutdown type of players. I was hoping rolling 3 scoring lines would be the way to go but...it's not working for me either.

I myself usually roll 3 offensive lines and a defensive line (fourth line). By doing overload, my third line plays a good amount of minutes and I set my lines so they are against the 4th line I think? They usually do alright. What kills me is actually my first line. Never can generate all-star offense from that line.

That is my approach as well. Works out fine so far. Doesn't hurt if those 3rd-line players also have decent hitting/checking attributes.

I have a huge problem with defense. I'm playing in the Swedish hockey league at the moment. I have top of the league players on every position and one of the leagues best goaltenders. Still I concede many goals. My goaltender posts a 2.59 GAA and .898 sv%. What can I do to tighten up my defense and help out my goaltender and GAA?

I'm not an EHM vet but in real life a direct style just means that you're not wasting any time getting the puck forward and on net. Nobody carrying the puck out of your zone and no time wasted making short possession passes looking for the perfect opportunity, it's really just about putting shots on net and getting guys up near the crease looking for deflections and tap ins.

As far as I know, coaching style doesn't affect your tactics or vice versa, as long as you're coaching the games yourself. It does come into play in player development. The one's who're listed as preferring a more defensive style are better in developing defensive attributes. At least this is what I've been telling myself. Adaptability comes into play when looking at how well the different coaches get along with other coaches who might not share their preferred style, thus affecting their combined efforts in player development and/or how well the head coach can get results out of a staff who doesn't share his philosophy. This is straight out of the 2005 guide, and something which is very hard to prove beyond any doubt, but I've always had the feeling there's truth behind this.

In the end I'd still recommend trying to match your tactics with the preferred style of your head coach, or find a coach to support your preferred tactics, either way. And not because this would have a direct effect on team on-ice performance, but because you should always try to max your strengths. There's little point in developing your players D first if you're aiming to go into every game all guns blazing.

Just out of interest on this one, do we think it is better to sign a head coach with your preferred style of play and put his attributes as a second priority, as opposed to vice versa? Presumably, doing it the other way and compromising on your preferred style of play could yield better long-term results?

Personally I always go with his attribute first. I prefer my head coach to be able to improve my players first (especially my rookies) before any style of play. In the long run it pays more.

Me too, just was interested to see what other peoples thoughts were, really! I can't help but look towards developing players. In an ideal world, you get the perfect mix, but I like playing in the Czech Republic or the UK so it's hard to get that balance!

The only time I take style of play into account is when I'm only playing as a GM and letting the coach handle simmed games. When I'm controlling the games I usually have more than one style of play so I try not to pigeonhole myself.

Anyone know how to limit shots for opposing teams in the slot? I've always got far too many shots against in the hash marks and in. This has been a big problem I've always had, limiting the high percentage shots. I haven never been able to and therefore haven't had a goalie up in the .920's no matter how good. Right now I have Matt Murray at .897 45 games in because of those slot shots.

If you go through <insert file in the game-files> you can find all the in-game hints from the load-screens. A few of them actually detail exactly which attributes are used for each coaching area. And defensive gets a bonus from the coach having defensive tactics. Both shooting and Offensive gets a bonus from the coach having attacking tactics. Conditioning, Skating and Goalie doesn't care which tactics at all. For styles Conditioning+Skating wants Conditioning, Tactics+Shooting wants Technique and Goalie+Offensive just doesn't care.

I've posted my Jets save tactics piecemeal all over the place, figured it was about time to put all the even strength stuff in one place. Note that most of the actual settings for each line are pretty much pointless since every single player has the personal tactics settings, causing them to be overwritten. But I figured I might as well put them in there too, together with the record we've had over the last 4 years since I got the tactics to it's current state:
Image
Edit: forgot to include the general team tactics, so here they are:
Image
When you have that high a winrate the game gets a bit funny as it freaks out and tries to stop you. It often targets my special teams causing them to start seasons as league leading and then nose dive as soon as I hit the 30 game mark with ~90% win rate. But I have those posted over in the PP tactics thread if you want to give them a whirl, due to the aformentioned "balancing" it doesn't really matter that much though. ES goals will be your bread and butter with this tactic, and you'll have the best defence (as far as limiting shots go) essentially every year.

Note that both scorers and playmakers are set to passing. I've never seen a player score more goals (or shoot more for that matter) on Shooting. In my experience they just perform worse on Shooting. I have it on my dmen purely to force as many offensive faceoffs as possible. Because it seems to make them a bit more willing to take point shots, something that never comes into play for our scorers (hence why they don't use the setting).

And these are the players, to give an idea of what kind of player fits where. Top being 1st line and bottom 4th line. Funnily enough our 2nd line Playmaker was 2nd runner up for the Selkie last season:S He's only 19, hence why his attributes are a bit low. But he's plenty good enough, scouts have him at ending up about as good as MacKinnon.
Image

Finally, here are the defensive corps. Some of them play roles that are completely opposed to their attributes. But I just play them in the role that they perform best in. That's the blessing in disguise when you get injuries. You're forced to play your players in roles that aren't your first choice. And sometimes it's a match made in heaven.

Need help figuring the checking-line out...

In my world, the checking-line is first and foremost a defensive line that exists to line-match against your oppositions best offensive line and to inject energy in your offense by checking and hitting hard.
But nevertheless I never seem to get the line to be able to either shutdown their best line or for that matter to get any good +- stats.

The line-matching does only work when you're the home team right? Because the rule of home team choosing line after the away team?''

And what unit line tactic shall I have? Atm im using:
Mentality - defensive, Aggressiveness - Aggressive, Backchecking - Hard, Gap Control - Tight, Puck Pressure - Hard, Hitting - Hard, Tempo - High, Passing & Shooting - Normal (unless a player has higher than 15 passing & creativity or higher than 15 in either wristshot or slapshot), Dumping the puck - Often. Another question, should a player with high attribute in aggressiveness and hitting have "a hard-hitting aggressive" personal tactic? It seems to put him in the penalty box to often.

Tactical Systems is a mystery for me.. tried basically all types of combos but nothing seem to be the "best"....

Would be very thankful for help! And please don't only link to guides, looking for tips not guides. Peace

So quick question:

Has anyone compiled the different known tactics anywhere, in downloadable form or fully fleshed out in text? I know there's the infamous Slapshot one, and the popular Red PlaymOver Barrage, and years ago in 2007 I created my own GOON tactics (which exist almost solely to wreak havoc and generate PIM). Are there any others though? Especially that are more defensive or trapping, for lower-end teams?

And can we maybe get a section in Downloads for them?

I've never had any real luck using a checking line either. My first reaction to it not working was to simply ignore defensive forwards all together and use only flashy, quick scoring forwards. Which works just fine. But it's a bit one-dimensional and doesn't really give you particularly inspiring defensive stats. But if you score more than they do, you still win.

The happy medium seems to be what I went with in the Jets tactic above, 1 def/two-way guy on each line, together with 1 def/two-way dman on each pair that together shut down their top two guys. It eliminates any need for line matching and lets you dictate the game by having their top 2 shut down no matter what line you have out. While forcing them to try and match you as best they can instead. We have the lowest allowed shots every single season and the most shots on goal, while also having the least times short-handed and most times on PP. Last two seasons we've seen Pct above 90%. A "shot +/-" of more than +1200 and a team +/- of over +190 both years. So clearly just using the two players on each line to shut down their scoring threat is more than sufficient to completely block out their top guys. I'm 12 seasons in and can count the amount of goals Patrick Kane has scored against us on my two hands. The "check player" option seems to just be outrageously powerful. Making actual checking lines somewhat superfluous. Besides I really don't trust this game to line-match properly anyways. I'd rather have something that works without relying on the game engine's ability to put the right line out there at the right time.

As far as personal tactics for defensive forwards go. My two guys that duke it out for the Selkie every year both have aggression set to either "Easy" or "Calm" (to match their aggression attribute). Backchecking to "Very Hard", Hitting to match their hitting attribute, gap control to "tight" (since both are fast as anything), puck pressure to "high". They still need to have the right skills to back it up. But it's the two of them and McDavid in the Selkie finals literally every year the three of them has been in the league. As both of them are top 6 forwards I have them as "normal" rather than "defensive" as my offensive top players are on "offensive" and I don't want to create too big a disconnect between the forwards. I do not have "join the rush" ticked on them though, as to make sure they are a bit more defensively responsible. In the bottom 6 the offensive guys are on "normal" and the defensive guy on "defensive" to give them slightly more margin for error.

For the question on high aggression players. There is a reported correlation between high aggression and high "dirtiness" in this game. It's part of why I essentially ignore anyone with about 14 or higher aggression in the draft. Many of them simply take way too many penalties. We've had our guys with 4 & 6 aggression win the Selkie with as little as 0 Penalty minutes on the season. So high aggression isn't needed for a player to be good defensively, in my opinion it actually hinders their ability to be good defensively. The only guys I want about 12-14 aggression in are the netfront guys on the PP who need to be willing and able to battle it out in there. For someone who's on defence I want a level headed approach where they play smart, not hard.

Hope that helped clear some questions up.

new and could use some advice

Post by chadbrochill17 »

Hey guys, ive only played a few seasons of the game in total and could use a little advice on what kind of tactics to be using for my team, I have a really really good team, currently 2nd in the league. I would be higher but nobody will trade me a goalie (GO DEMKO GOO!!!) and my coach was seemingly being stupid before i figured out how to stop him from changing lines.

So basically my lines are :

Ryan O'Reilly - Mcdavid - Voracek
Domi - Brassard - Zuccarello
G.Borque - Bjugstad - J.Hansen
Etem - B.Sutter - Z.Kassian

Edler - PK
muller - savard
P.Larsen - Bogosian

Demko
Markstrom

Im not sure how I should be setting up the tactics, ive tried Off.Finess and run and gun but feel the team should be doing better. this is the 2017 season.

What team are you? Cant tell by the lineup tbh.. And for the tactic, why change if its working for you? I would change some minor things, mostly in the own zone to help out the goalies.

Im the Canucks, i just felt like they should have been doing better. I actually had found some info and made some tweaks to unit tactics and personal tactics, i did that with 1 game left in the season, 2nd place with 57 wins I think, Won the stanley cup in 16 games :) so i think tactics made a big difference!
