I think that extra sting from the puck might help some goalies even to play better (more determination and motivation the stop it). :-D
nino33 wrote:As an former goalie I don't even mind the lower scoring so much HaHa, but I hate the fact that all goalies play the exact same boring style (and that that style is completely reliant on the equipment changes to play)
A reason why rating goalies for EHM is not the most interesting work to do. ;)

Good points, nino. Did not NHL reduce the maximum pad width after the lockout season of 2004-2005? Presuming I indeed remember correctly, what came of that?

Any changes that are to be implemented should be negotiated between at least NHL and IIHF, since the last thing we need is more differences between North American and rest-of-the-world ice hockey. At least in my opinion.

I honestly don't know what came of it, but for me when it comes to pads it's the new style pads (that rotate to give a 90 degree wall when as goalie goes down, with the extra knee pad to allow the goalie to slide around on his knees) that are the problem, not so much how wide they are

I honestly don't think we're going to see much if any real change (and the chances of the NHL and IIHF "working together" in any meaningful way is about as likely as real change)

That's why I think that likely the only real legitimate potential to make a positive difference is bigger nets.....it's the simplest change to make, and doesn't require dealing with equipment manufacturing and player safety; I can't believe I'm saying it, I would have never imagined I would ever say it growing up, but I am...I think "it's gone to far now, and for to long" and there's no way of going back (so given the game's nothing like what I grew up with, changing the net size doesn't seem like such a big deal to me anymore)

Condon traded to Ottawa for a fifth round pick. Rough start for Condon this season even though it was predictable. :-p

Well he was a backup as long as Murray was injured. Wasn't he traded to the Penguins for a 5th also? So they more or less just "borrowed" him for that time.

I understand that the game is not the same as it was back in the days (I feel the same for NBA, btw), but to me changing the nets' size is a blasphemy. I think that people who appreciate only games with redicolous scores like 9-7 is people who don't understand a Adam Oates about hockey, therefore they can really go and watch basketball or whatever other sport scoring means nothing. The best to me is a good 2-1 game or so, low scoring, high tension, every puck possession counts and can be the key to win the game...
But I know I am extreme :-D

Nah, Pens claimed Condon on waivers, good piece of business from Rutherford.

For me the game hit the blasphemy stage 15-20 years ago...
The sticks they use and the goalie equipment and the TV timeouts and the high glass and more is all part of the blasphemy to me...

And for me it has nothing to do with wanting to increase scoring, and everything to do with going back to goaltenders making saves again, and having individual styles, instead of every goalie looking/playing exactly the same...

Bernie Parent (my avatar/favourite goalie) had a 1.89 GAA playing in 1973-74 and 2.03 in 1974-75...Ken Dryden had a 2.24 career GAA playing from 1971-1979

In the last 10 years NHL teams have averaged 2.71-2.95 goals per game...in the 1970s they averaged 2.90-3.51 http://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/stats.html - comparing 1970s scoring to the last decade, we're roughly talking about a team scoring an extra goal every couple games (not 9-7 games!)

Well, I think I was clear that I was talking "in general" when I talked about people who don't understand anything, of course I wasn't referring to you...

I honestly don't see people saying they want 9-7 games, I see people saying the game's boring

Oh cool, thanks! (I wonder how long until they shut him down?) :-D
The NHL games seemed to have stopped as of October 25th (there's a download link for a November 1st game but #1 I use my PS3 to watch YouTube, not my computer and #2 outside of things connected to EHM I don't download things).....but I've got soccer to watch, Serg 72 is still posting games but they're retro games (which is fine with me!), and if I decide I care enough about the modern NHL I believe I can still watch highlight packages from the NHL site

Show me those people and I would say 95% of them are casual fans of the sport who, in my opinion, shouldn't be the target audience for the NHL. I certainly don't find the game boring, especially when I'm rooting for my favorite team.

I use this site everyday to watch highlights without knowing the scores.

+ they are longer than the NHL.com shows.

The ratings have never been high in the US, they've been dropping in Canada for years.....and I think it's wishful thinking to think that 95% of those unhappy with the game are casual fans (casual fans don't typically post on hockey sites about their dissatisfaction with the game)

I use my PS3 to watch stuff and not my computer, thus I like to use YouTube (I apparently can search/access the web via my PS3 but I've never found it works & thus I may just stick with YouTube, Netflix, DVDs and music - that seems like enough!)

But if I do decide to watch NHL highlights on my computer, thanks for the link! Not knowing the scores is certainly a better way to do it

People say the Leafs play exciting and fun hockey. That sure hasn't been the case tonight. It's basically Andersen vs the world lmao

Also, Ristolainen's been more confident with the puck lately and it's an absolute treat to watch.

Not a bad result last night for his first start of the season!

Condon is a better goalie than Andrew Hammond and with Andreson's status uncertain he is going to get a pile of starts in Ottawa.
