Anyone interested in analytics should read this article about the passing project, it's a massive project where they track passing data.

Re: Official NHL Season 2016-2017 Thread
Not an "NHL topic" per se, so I'm sorry (but it does talk about NHL players, and how they didn't always play internationally because they were in the NHL)...but I'm wondering - does anyone know why Sweden didn't take part in the Winter Olympics Hockey Tournament in 1976?
I was on HFBoards having a "discussion" with someone who didn't think that all but Russia had many/most/all their best players in NA (the WHA/NHL) during large parts of the 70s and 80s
This person disagreed with me, and challenged me to produce proof, and I listed dozens of player examples (from Sweden/the US) and this person still argued against me; it's like they didn't know who Börje Salming, Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nillson were! I was told "maybe look at Olympic/World Championships rosters" as if Salming, Hedberg and Nilsson weren't on the Swedish national team and playing in the NHL/WHA because they weren't as good as Swedes at home
So I did spend a bit of time looking into things further, and.....Sweden apparently didn't take part in the Winter Olympics Hockey Tournament in 1976? Anyone know why? I don't recall this myself.....
Thank to any who reply

Re: Official NHL Season 2016-2017 Thread
Found this after some googling.
" Sverige deltog inte eftersom Svenska Ishockeyförbundets förbundsstyrelse ansåg att Sverige inte längre kunde leva upp till amatörreglerna."
(rough)Translation: Sweden didn't participate because the Swedish hockey associations board didn't think Sweden could live up to the amateur rules
"Men en större anledning till att Sverige inte deltog var att man var oroliga för att Elitserien skulle drabbas av minskade publikintäkter efter olympiska vinterspelen"
Translation: But a bigger reason as to why Sweden didn't participate was because they were worried that Elitserien (Swedish elite league) would suffer from declining ticket sales after the olympics.
Think Elitserien was just started for the 75/76 season.

Marchant's suspensions are ridiculous after so many offenses.

It's just DoPS taking the easy cowardly way out as per usual, they're so incompetent.

Maple Leafs have clinched a playoff spot, it's going to be interesting how they do in the playoffs with such a young team.

Hitchcock goes back to Dallas.
I thought he was done after St. Louis. They could have gone with a younger coach.

Hitch is a good coach, with more an emphasis on the defensive side than DAL had previously. He's won everywhere, including making Columbus probably overachieve in his stint there.philou21 wrote:Hitchcock goes back to Dallas.I thought he was done after St. Louis. I'd expect him to get results pretty quickly, though DAL will still need to add/change some pieces to help. I know people think that Central Division is tough, but I see a lot of flaws in the teams there not named Chicago.

Seems like Gallant will be named the head-coach of the Golden Knights.

Jake Allen was on fire yesterday! Also, only 19 shots by the Oilers, rough first playoffs game for them.

Young team, first playoff game in 11 years, led going into the 3rd and lost in OT (to a team the was in the Finals last year) - could have been worse IMO!philou21 wrote: only 19 shots by the Oilers, rough first playoffs game for them.

In the first eight games of the playoffs, Swedes have 3 game-winning goals and a shutout by Lundqvist.
Good stuff!

You never hear these things in the Finnish media, for one reason or another...Manimal wrote:In the first eight games of the playoffs, Swedes have 3 game-winning goals and a shutout by Lundqvist.

Re: Official NHL Season 2016-2017 Thread
I have honestly never understood the fascination about the performance of NHLers "from the home country" (I'm sure sometimes I get NA citizenship confused sometimes, because upon hearing a traditional NA name where I don't automatically know their nationality, I've never even once thought "I wonder if he's Canadian/I wonder what nationality he is?"A9L3E wrote:You never hear these things in the Finnish media, for one reason or another...Manimal wrote:In the first eight games of the playoffs, Swedes have 3 game-winning goals and a shutout by Lundqvist.

I don't really care about how the Finns do either. I'm a Caps fan, that's it. Nationalities are not important. But I guess it has to do with the small country mentality, rooting for your own boys. A Canadian wouldn't care, because the majority of NHL players are Canadians. You'd exhaust yourself with excitement if you'd cheer for all of them.

Russia's a pretty big country, and I'd say they are the most likely to care about their countrymen above all else (some such fans even openly claim it's only the performance of their countrymen they care about, and how their countrymen's team does is irrelevant/they don't care)Tasku wrote:I don't really care about how the Finns do either. Regarding the Canadians.....more comparable to me is Canadians playing in Europe/Russia, and I can't ever recall a Canadian caring how Canadian players did playing in the SHL, KHL, etc

Ah, good point. Well, I don't know about the Russians, it's just my impression on it. Like I said, I don't care about nationalities when it comes to club hockey. International hockey is the time to care about that.nino33 wrote:Russia's a pretty big country, and I'd say they are the most likely to care about their countrymen above all else (some such fans even openly claim it's only the performance of their countrymen they care about, and how their countrymen's team does is irrelevant/they don't care)Tasku wrote:I don't really care about how the Finns do either.
