Sounds like it's my error, as I thought Swe-2 was a "lower league" two levels below HockeyAllsvenskan (I thought it was one of the TBL added Leagues)

Shindigs wrote:Even the AI in huge budget AAA titles is lazy, simplistic and taking the easy way out. Why assume a small one man project's AI wouldn't take that same path?
I think I'm not assuming anything, and that includes drawing conclusions about the game AI from testing done in lower Leagues

I know there are differences in AI depth for different Leagues, and I know the game itself is NHL centric...I don't think lower level European Leagues are representative of the AI; I agree that the Financial/Roster Management AI needs improvement, but I suspect that non-Elite pro hockey Leagues are not high on the priority list

For myself, with things as complicated as AI, when it comes up as an issue in my discussions with Riz I try to just tell him #1 what is wanted/what I think would be best and #2 what I see happening via testing (and/or see many posting about); I do sometimes "guess" as to why, and make suggestions (and I've been wrong sometimes because I didn't understand how the coding worked, as it wasn't at all what was expected); I never start from a position that I think I know/understand, I never bring up other games and how I think they're done. When Riz tells me how things work on something, and I test it and validate it, I'm satisfied it's true; when the testing shows issues I point them out to Riz

I might look into testing the Financial AI a bit with my 1974 database when it's ready for the new EHM, but I doubt it, as my interest in testing has really waned; I think an entire database has to be "set up" before effective testing can be done (I believe effective/helpful testing needs to be aware of/deal with variables...there's a lot of editing that can be done to an EHM database that can change the effect of those variables IMO)
I completely agree on that last point. Because we are essentially only seeing the symptoms in testing, rather than the causes. Doing testing on an unfinished product can and will give a lot of false positives. Naturally there is difference in depth of the AI in different leagues, since they have different rules and some have/don't have drafts. My point is that we can't assume the AI in the NHL has coding to deal with the budget when other parts of the AI does not. It's probable that as much code is used between the different leagues as possible, because that's efficient. So my base assumption is thus that the AI in the NHL doesn't have that functionality, because if it did why wouldn't it be "copy pasted" as the base code for crafting the lower league AI? My knowledge of AI coding on the scale needed in a game as sprawling as this isn't good enough to say for sure that's the most probable way it works. But it seems like a reasonable starting point to test around, but I also have very little interest in testing. I prefer learning while playing, because that way I learn only the things that are actually applicable to winning in the game. There is a lot of stuff that's completely useless information to that end, but incredibly useful information from a db researcher's point of view since the end goals are two completely different things.

Regardless of all that we should probably stop derailing this thread.

In an effort to stay remotely on topic I'll just share the reason for moving on Öhman and Lilja in the off-season. I use the end of season review excel sheet I made to look at overall performance in a fair few fields. It feels a bit nostalgic to be using it in the EIHL again, because it was in my first save in this league I created the original version of this sheet:
Image
The biggest pieces in me deciding whether to keep a player or not is Min/ESP which is how many minutes apart each point scored for that player during even strength is, in tandem with Min/GA which is the same but for goals conceded per minute of even strength played. I currently have it in descending order based on ESP/Min - GA/Min, and anyone with above 0 is putting up Top 6 performance on the Forward side, Dmen will almost always have a negative. I don't put a lot of stock in that specific metric, which is essentially a modified and simplified Corsi. But as you can see Öhman is bottom 3 despite his two 1st line partners being 3rd and 4th, which isn't exactly great. Lilja having next to no point production isn't that weird, but him having one of the worst Min/GA of the defencemen while also not producing points is why he won't be with us any longer. Hunt being as high as he is on the forward list as a young British player is quite impressive, especially since he played on the 3rd line. I've also decided to give the Captaincy to Urban Klingberg in no small part because of now well he fits on that first line, but also because of his incredible point production. He does a pretty good job of personifying the kind of hockey I want this team to play, his assistants will be Lukas Enkvist and Filip Hasa. I like having 1 assistant captain on the 2nd line and the other as a Dman to spread the love a bit. Hasa is the offensive defenceman with the most suitable mentals to be part of the leadership group, which is why I picked him over Dahlroth. But unless Hasa picks his play up next season we might look to make changes in that department for our 3rd season.

CHL draw just came through, we're certainly not in the toughest group. It will be interesting to see what we can get done this season.

I've had some interesting regen intakes in my time, but I think this one takes the cake:
Image
Just where am I supposed to put all of these?

Cool, thanks to this intake I could also prove an old theory I had about players being able to generate with higher CA than PA and then having them lose all their excess attrbutes over night:
Image
The upper one is him on the day he generated, and the lower one is the day after. I had about 4-5 players like this in that intake alone, this was just the guy that happened to generate one day after the others. So I remembered to look up his db entry to see what was going on as his attributes were clearly too high to be a "real" British newgen.

The CHL is quite the warm up for the new season. Our first game saw us face up against Sparta Praha away from home, it was an even affair as far as the shot totals were concerned with them outshooting us 25-24. Sadly their goalie completely walled us while Åhman had a bit of a collapse. The game ended with a scoreline of 4-1, which was a bit harsh. But the very next day we had the be in Krefeld for our 2nd game of the group stage. We ended up dominating the shot stats with 38-26, but again their goalie was just not having it. We eventually lost 2-3 in the Shootouts, but we did pick up our 1st point. Our next game was a week later at home to Krefeld, and now we at least knew not to target low against their goalie. We ended up dispatching them 4-1 while outshooting them 36-19, so it wasn't even close. After that we had another week off before facing Sparta Praha at home, because of results elsewhere we had actually already made it through because of Sparta winning their 2nd game against Krefeld. But I still wanted to give a good showing in our last game of the group stages. Sadly Lukas Haudum managed to get injured in practice the day before the game, so we were out a top 6 forward. We ended up dominating the play in the game with the shot stats being 43-26 in our favor, but again their goalie just proved too much for us as we lost the game 4-3 in the shootouts. But I'm quite pleased to have made it out of the group in our first year, since not knowing the goalies you come up against means anything could happen.
Image
In the first playoff round we're going to be facing Klagenfurt out of Austria, but that isn't until the 19th of September. So for now we are going to shift our focus to the EIHL and the BCC.

The series against Klagenfurt ended up being a very tight affair, in the first game we started off on low shot targeting and after putting up 15 shots in the first period we hadn't managed to score and were down 2-0. For the last two periods we went with 5-hole targeting instead and were able to score 3 goals in the 18 shots we mustered over that time, leading to a 4-3 defeat at home. But since we were only trailing by the single goal we could still at the very least force OT/SO by beating Klagenfurt away from home even if only by the 1 goal margin. A week later, after some quite rocky league form, we were in Austria. The 2nd game we were going to target 5-hole since their goalie was very bad against that in the first tie. As it turned out that was a fluke and despite outshooting them by a fair amount we only just managed a 3-2 win. This meant that we were tied at 6-6 on aggregate, and heading into OT. Since this is EHM obviously no one scored in OT, so we went into the Shootouts where after 2 each. No one had actually managed to score, Klagenfurt took their 3rd shot and Åhman saved it. This put the game on the Stick of 17 year old rookie Linus Skager, of all people. To my great surprise he actually managed to score, giving us the series win 7-6 on aggregate! We're on to the next round of the playoffs, but I haven't had the draw yet so no idea who we'll face. Regardless we're further than I'd expect us to get this soon.
Image
In typical EHM fashion 4+2=8 and 3+4=9, as can be seen in the news item.

Oh dear, just got drawn against Djugården. They are currently 1 point off topping the SHL. This probably won't end well.

The series against Djurgården ended up being a lot closer than I could've ever hoped. In game 1 at home we ended up losing 3-5, but the 5th goal was very late. About a week later we traveled to Sweden and played our hearts out to win the game 4-2 in regulation, which meant this series was going into OT. Sadly our hopes were short-lived as Juuso Ikonen scored only 1:42 into OT to give them the win 8-7 on aggregate. But for us to be able to give a SHL top team a scare this early, with a goalie who just turned 18 and a lineup with an average age of 17.63 years old was way beyond my highest hopes. Had their goalie not over-performed in our barn we would be heading into the Quarter Finals in our first year of Continental play.

First season with Energija Elektrenai ended ... we finished 5th which lead us to a playoff quarter final against the 4th seed Vitebsk2. We swept them aside before being beaten out by BFSO Dinamo 4-2. All in all not a bad season. On 15th january Vermount Catamounts (NCAA) sacked their GM :)

Now as most players wanted to test free agency it is tiome to try getting a squad for the upcoming season. Not an easy task at all.

The fact that most players in Europe like getting 1 year deals really leads to a lot of player movement, unless you add in player and team extra year clauses.

We just got to new year in the EIHL and we're pretty much dominating the league this season, not the player leaderboards though. Because Cardiff went incredibly Top heavy this year and spent a large part of their budget on getting Cole Sanford, who has NHL top 6 attributes (apart from his 6 in work rate). Adam Åhman is quickly turning into the best goalie in the league, despite his young age. Our BP started off with a solid 57%, but it's really gone up as the season's come along. Sadly our British backup goalie who was quite alright last season has been absolutely useless this season.

With all that said this is what the tables look like:
Image
of those 6 losses in regulation time 3 of them were with our backup in net.
Here's what the player leaderboards look like:
Image
as you can probably guess from the somewhat limited amount of players we have on the leaderboards we've really scored by committee as my teams often do, this is what our team leaderboards looked like:
Image
Phillip Schultz has been a nice surprise, wasn't expecting him to play that well in his rookie season. He is still a quite raw prospect by all accounts. Lukas Enkvist has sadly gotten a few injuries so far, and is currently out with a 2 month injury. Livio Stadler has gotten his first caps for the Swiss national team. Meanwhile Hasa, Haudum and Schultz all play for their respective national U20 teams. The downside of that being I don't have access to those guys for all games.

I got a team together ... with about 50.000 less salary then last season and i think it isn't much worse. We especially have a lot of great wingers. On center we are very bad though, but they are young and mentally strong. Maybe that will count for something. We have a nice mix in the team going from several teenagers to some very experienced players.

Re: How's it going in EHM 1? What team are you?

Post by philou21 »

First year with the Pinguins, the 2024-2025 season, is over! We finished with an astounishing (to my huge surprise) 105 pts season after finishing deadlast last season. Our record is 48-25-9. The team went extremely well in late february, march and april to qualify for the playoffs. Before that we were staying at the 9th spot for most of the season and started to climb our way up to the 3rd place! I dunno if the new coaches I brought made a huge difference and if the mix of veterans/rookies was perfect but we did way better than I expected. I didn't even used any tactics! I was honestly expecting the team to finish in the bottom 10 of the league. Oh well, me that wanted to draft high! :D

Phil Kessel, despite his 37 years old, carried the team on his shoulders. He finished with 88 pts in 72 games good for the 8th spot in the league. Sawchenko, my goalie who I didn't have much faint in him ended up doing the job without being super good. He finished 38-15-3 with a GAA of 2.33 ad a save % of .913. His performance average is 7.72 which is pretty good. Here's the players stats...

Image

As you guys can see, Crosby did a good season too but his average performance dropped alot. He went from 7.5 to 7.24 and he had alot of "5" games in the season. Though he went from 52 pts to 81 pts which is good. Kessel went from 56 to 88 and honorable mention to Cehlarik who went from 26 pts to 79! Brooks who started his career at 18 never managed to get passed 44 pts and he did 71 pts. He's also signed for the next 4 years at 1.9 millions! That's not me who did the deal though. Big congrats to Moffatt who did 68 pts in his rookie season. I hope he'll win the Calder!

In the playoffs we faced Carolina in the first round and we lost Crosby for 1 month in game #4. ](*,) We still managed to win the serie in 7 games. On to the second we are against Columbus and we easily won that serie 4-2. On to the conference finale we are up against the powerful Sabres. We went down quickly 0-3 then made the epic comeback to win the serie 4-3. Stanley Cup finale here we come! (I still don't believe it what the hell) We are up against Calgary. Of course the impossible had to happen. We won the Cup in 5 games.....I dunno what to say. I was expecting to finish dead last and had NO expectations for this year. Me that wanted a reconstruction challenge LOL :-?

Despite winning the Cup in my first year I don't think I'll let go already of that save even though I'm a bit shocked and disappointed. There's still the post-Crosby era I'm eager to manage to see if this will make a difference. During the season I resigned Crosby to a one year deal worth 8 millions instead of 8.7. Letang signed for one year for 9 millions instead of 9.7. DeKeyser wants to go UFA just like Nelson and I'm letting Ovechkin go. I'm also planning on trading Wennberg away. So there's still work to do and when Crosby and Letang will retire I don't expect the team to win the Cup anytime soon. (Well, we'll see  ) So I guess the challenge will still be there.

Second season's come to an end now. We ended up winning the BCC without any real hiccups, as expected. However in the EIHL final against Sheffield Adam Åhman had a 3rd period collapse and we blew a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 in OT after only 39 seconds. It should be noted that I ended up messing up again while zoning out after we'd already qualified to the playoffs so Dahlroth is currenrly in FA, but has agreed to come back with a wage raise. Filip Hasa fractured his shin in the last game of the regular season, so he's out. That left us with only 4 Dmen for the entire playoffs. To add insult to injury, or rather injury to injury. Our Captain, top scorer and 1st line Center Urban Klingberg got a mild concussion in training the day before the semi-finals, and so he missed both the semi-finals and the finals. Had I not messed up and we not gotten hit with top player injuries we would more than likely have gotten the double this season. But that's also the thing with BO1 in the playoffs, a single bad game from your goalie and you're done. Their goalie slightly over-performed in that final game and Åhman put up a .857. Not that much to do about it, but we're qualifying for the CHL regardless so I don't really care about if we do/don't win the league.

Lukas Enkvist went on a pretty insane scoring tear after he came back from his 2 month injury, despite only playing 35 games he put up 53 points. We ended the season well over 80% Pct and we conceded less than 10 BP goals this entire season, as we only averaged 2 PIM per game. At this point I'm pretty much not going to change anything other than shuffling some of my British prospects around in the 4th line. We just need time for our players to grow and mature and I have no doubt this team can win the CHL a couple years down the line, barring horrible goalie luck.

We may possibly lose some players to the NHL though, Filip Hasa was ranked 133th Overall and Samuel Fagemo 162nd Overall in the Mid-season rankings. The final ones have yet to show up. There was a Finnish winger I was looking to sign last off-season but I lost out to a Finnish team. He's currently ranked 92nd Overall and looking like a very deadly winger. But we're already pretty stacked on those and honestly you don't want player that good in Europe, because you just lose them to the NHL anyways. It's better to try and get guys that just bad enough that they won't go to the NHL so you can build a consistent, sustainable core. At least in my opinion, that's the way to go.

Cole Sanford and co. really fell off towards the end of the season so Urban Klingberg managed to just clinch the Top scoring spot in the league:
Image
Honestly it's a bit weird we don't have more presence on the +/- leaderboards considering the team as a whole had a +/- of +113. But our 1st line was almost pure offensive this year so they conceded A LOT of goals, which is a large part of why.

On our way to the EIHL finals we had a pretty massive 10-3 win against Coventry where I had a new all-time record for any of my saves. And it was achieved by a 17 year old Brit:
Image
Rob Farmer put up a 6 assist game, I've had a fair few 5 assist games, and I've had 7 point games from players. But never a 6 assist game before this.

The end of season ISS reports just came in. Fagemo has leapfrogged Hasa and is now ranked at 126th overall, while Hasa fell to 146th overall due to his injury.

The worse part is I didn't do anything this year! No trades, no tactics and I asked the coach to do the lines. I only did 2 or 3 changes. :-k. Last DG that got fired drafted most of those guys so he takes the credit despite being out! :D

These days there are some decent teams to GM that are vaguely in Siberia though:)

Oh and January is not a good month to be the GM in Vermont:
Image
It gave me a bit of a chuckle as this happened about 15 minutes after I read about their GM being fired in January in your save too.

NHL draft just took place, some surprises. I ended up signing a guy that I had my eyes on since day 1 of this save, but who had an 11Mkr pricetag on him until he hit Free Agency this summer. I don't honestly expect him to ever get to play for us since he was expected to go 30th in the NHL draft. But that's a win/win for us regardless. If he stays we get a Defensive Forward being compared to Bergeron, and if he goes we get paid 2.7Mkr by the NHL team that sign him. So it was a strategtic signing more than anything.

Samuel Fagemo somehow dodged the draft despite being ranked 127th by the ISS, but we still had 3 guys drafted:
Image
Filip Hasa went so much earlier than expected, and Winnipeg showed some guts. Not every team that picks an unranked goalie at 95th overall. It's not a good decision mind you, but a gutsy one.

The board is expecting us to reach the playoffs, so no longer they want us to win the title. I think playoffs are doable.

But the newspaper see it different. Energija Elektrenai is rated as 12th and last team. MVP Rolandas Aliukonis the experienced defender. Winger Evgeny Dadonov is rated as the key arrival.

We have two of our players mentioned among the top players of the league:

Evgeny Dadonov - 9th among left wings
Daniel Bogdziul - 10th among right wings, though we will use him mainly as center

Wait, THE Evgeny Dadonov? In Belarus? Is he really old and lost his legs? Because otherwise that's insane. Also I wouldn't put to much thought into what the papers think. They said my Seattle team was the worst team in the NHL every single season in that save, and that wasn't exactly true.

The CHL draw just came through, we're in a group with Adler Mannheim (who knocked out Djurgården in the semi-finals last year) and Vienna Capitals. So it's the battle of the Caps for the 2nd spot, because Mannheim will certainly qualify. Vienna did not make it past the group stage last year so I'm hopeful. Also Buffalo have not yet come in for Erik Wallberg, so I'm looking to probably move Lukas Enkvist onto the wing on our first line to slot in Wallberg as our 2nd Center. But I'm still not 100% sure how the lines will look for this season. Which is a slight issue considering the first pre-season game is tomorrow and the CHL starts in about 2 weeks. But really the issue is that we have too much talent, so I shouldn't complain.

This is what Erik Wallberg looks like btw.
Image
A new goal of sorts is to try and get to the NHL before he retires, because he's a can't miss NHL talent. It would be really neat to have some of the same players come with me for more parts of the journey.

lol i wish he were ... he is just a belarussian player with the same name, and probably the name is the biggest reason why i went out to sign him. In 6 games he scored two assists so far, i am struggling to score still, well it has been expected without a even remotely acceptable center and goalie. After 6 games i am 1-3 and two Shootout losses. But have played against the strongest teams so not too unhappy. First line winger Pavel Dashkov is allready in good form scoring 6 points in those 6 games so far.

Will be really interesting if i can reach the playoffs. I don'T have a great team, i have awful staff and the staff is setting the tactics :)

That makes more sense then haha. Otherwise the Belarusian's would have really stepped up their game to have him be the 9th best winger:S

Made some changes in the lineup, in a somewhat embarrassing turn of events it seems like Dahlroth will have to leave us again, one of my British Dmen has surpassed him and I need the 14th Foreign slot for Erik Wallberg. So I guess he left, rejoined and now will leave again. I mean he won't I'll keep him around for when injuries happen, but it's a bit awkward. Knowing my defence someone will break a leg, and then if that someone is foreign he'll probably get at least half a season of play. Since there is a real risk of Hasa going to the NHL in a year or two having someone to take over when he's gone isn't horrible.

Our forward side of things is absolutely stacked now. I've changed to "equal" usage with 30/30/30/30 ice time. So we are legitimately rolling 4 skilled lines. When I say that I mean I'd love to play any of my 4 lines as our 1st line at this level.
Image
I'm hopeful we will be able to get some work done this season. We may even have what it takes for an upset CHL win, if we have luck on our side. I should probably show off Collins, our new British prospect. I got him from Cardiff's U18 team, and he looks pretty insane for a British player. I'm especially impressed by his mentals, as they are NHL level for sure.
Image
My scouts are saying he's not got the highest PA, but my scouts are a bit weird. It's almost the exact same scouting team I tend to use in the NHL, they just don't seem to care as much over here.

I mean I've had Joe Thornton play in the 2nd division of Sweden before, so it wouldn't be the weirdest thing I've seen in EHM.

Speaking of weird things, Adler Mannheim's goalie is flippin Anders Nilsson. But that didn't matter, because we won the group! Keeping in mind Adler Mannheim finished 2nd in the CHL last year that's no small feat. If Vienna's goalie hadn't improved his SV% by 10% between game 1 and game 2 we would have swept the group. But what can you do? Also in the 2nd game against Mannheim Nilsson was away on international duty. So they had Justin Pogge in net, which forced the game into OT as he was not even remotely weak against low shot targeting. Adam Åhman put up a 4 game shutout streak in the 2 exhibitions games leading up to the CHL and the first two games of the group. In the 4-0 win against Mannheim we outshot them 46-20, in the 6-0 against Vienna we outshot them 38-20, in the rematch against Vienna at home we obviously lost 1-2, but still did outshoot them 28-23. Finally in the last game we won 3-2 in OT after outshooting them 38-25. So we really dominated the group, even though it didn't show as much in the point totals. Adam Åhman ended up with a .955 in the group stage, maybe Winnipeg were on to something...
Image
We were drawn against Bern for our first playoff game, they lost 5-7 on aggregate in the Quarter-finals to Djurgården last year. So they should be entirely beatable.

Haha, that neat. It feels really weird when you see people you know/knew IRL in a game. For some reason one of my best childhood friends is/was in the db, despite not having played for years. Some old teammates who still play pro showing up also just feels odd. Even though in their cases it makes perfect sense that they are in the db.

This is what Schultz looks like, he's still got a lot of growing to do. But he's already scored a bunch in the CHL.
Image
The stats at the bottom are from last season, since the new season hasn't really started yet.

We just got through the 1st playoff round of the CHL. Bern proved a complete pushover as we beat them 7-4 on aggregate while outshooting them heavily in both games. Schultz played no small role by having the Game winner in the first game and adding an assist in the 2nd game. Adam Åhman is still rock solid in net with a .937 so far in the CHL. That's obviously a big drop off from the .955 he had before, but still quite impressive for a teenage goalie.
Image

For the 2nd round of the CHL playoffs we were drawn againt ERC Ingolstadt. The series ended up being quite one-sided, despite us being without 5 players who were on International duty in the 1st game and 7 players who were away in the 2nd game. Not to sound like a broken record but Schultz scored the game winner in the first game, and in the 2nd game they fielded their backup goalie. So it was more or less a guaranteed win.
Image
...and I just noticed I accidentally flipped the match stats in the picture. Whoops!

For the Quarter-Finals we got drawn against EV Zug out of Switzerland, their goalie absolutely stood on his head in the 2nd game to force a 2-2 tie despite us outshooting them 2:1. But after the schooling we gave them in game 1 at home it just wasn't enough. We're Officially one of the 4 best teams in Europe no matter what happens from this point on in the tournament.
Image

Samuel Fagemo has been no small part of our successes and a bunch of NHL scouts have been poking around looking at him this season. His league production is absurd:
Image
Because I roll 4 lines his low Work Rate hasn't really been an issue.

Just hit New Year, we have a 100% win rate in our Conference and a 93.8% win rate overall, that pretty much sums it up. Adam Åhman is now the best goalie in the league by about 2%.

In the CHL semi-finals we're faced up against Färjestad, so this should be a tough one. Nope, not at all in fact. Game 1 was somewhat close because both Filip Hasa and Samuel Fagemo were away on International Duty. For game 2 we're at full strength and dominate them:
Image
We're heading to the CHL finals against Växjö, so it's essentially two Swedish teams in the final. We just happen to be a Swedish team based in Edinburgh. Åhman has really had a breakout season this year, .932 in the CHL and .924 in the EIHL as a 19y/o.

And stage 1 of the Pentagon challenge is complete. We completely dominated Växjö in the finals, and you can't guess who the First star was...
Image
I couldn't have scripted it better. So that's that, we won the CHL with an average player age of 18.45 years old. With a total player budget of about 60% of a single star player on almost all the teams we beat.

Now I just have to finish out the season and wait for some good job positions in NA to open up. Currently there are two "very insecure" positions in the AHL. We'll see how it looks once we hit off-season.

We ended up winning the British Challenger Cup and the League to complete the triple. Calgary Hitmen and Acadie-Bathurst are both insecure now. Saint John and Hamilton are both slightly insecure. Hopefully a position will open up and they'll pick my GM.

Blainville-Boisbriand decided to fire their GM out of the blue. I decided to apply even though the Q isn't my first choice as far as major-junior goes. But I've never played there at all so it will be a new experience.
Image
After winning the CHL we were ranked as the 4th best GM in the world, it's dropped to 14th by now. But we were still apparently their first (and maybe only) choice.

All of them, I had everything but the EIHL and BCC on view only though. Now I've switched those over to view only and put all the Major Junior leagues, as well as the NHL/AHL/ECHL on enhanced. I only have the Q on full sim. The others are on "only later stages", so I get to see the playoff results flash by during load screens.

And thanks for the well wishes, I'm new to the Q so not 100% sure what to expect. I have played a fair bit in the dub though so it shouldn't be too different.

Since I'm over in a closed league with a draft now I'll start using modified challenge rules, permitting myself 2 trades per season. Both can be either 1-for-2 or 1-for-1. But I'll only take 1-for-2 deals when those are the only ones given when I use "offer to all". I won't try and sneak broken 1-for-2 deals myself. I also allow myself to pick up 2 undrafted players per season, because I like scouting the lower leagues for the next undrafted star. With the two trades I'll only allow myself to trade for picks, never for players. I want to have a homegrown team in that regard. I also won't be interacting with UFAs/RFAs who were drafted at all. I'm going to try and ship over a lot of my backroom staff from Edinburgh to the Armada. I'd like most of them to follow me throughout the save.
redrobert81 wrote:Good luck Shindigs. Looks like this game is just too easy for you :-)
I'm still unsure on how to fix that issue. I used to play with the coach doing all the tactics stuff and that does make it a lot harder, but on the flipside I enjoy doing the tactics stuff. Having to tinker around when players get injured, and all that good jazz. Also in Europe this time I didn't bother using "check player" just to make the seasons go by faster. But in the NHL I really like using that option because it means I always know which are the top two scoring threats on every single team. It makes me a lot more involved in the save. I'm no longer just in my bubble doing my thing, but I actually have a very good idea of what all the other teams in the league are doing too. So as much as part of me wants to go back to not using all the tactics stuff for the sake of difficulty, that also removes a lot of the elements that I enjoy playing around with in this game. Because when your coach does all that stuff you only really "play" in the off-season. During the actual season you just sit and click space bar for about 1½ hours, then the season is over.

I decided to try something I'd never done before at Edinburgh. I was playing as GM/Head Coach, as I was interested to see which effect, if any, that would have on team performance. Honestly it's hard to judge the impact it had, but it didn't seem to hinder us at the very least. It also let me know that you can't win coach awards when doing that. Fun fact about that last season in Edinburgh btw; We conceded 5 Shorthanded goals, but only 2 Powerplay goals...that's just not right.

Right before I left Edinburgh we had a few key players leave who didn't want to resign. So I did fill those spots back in for the team, and I also ended up needing to sell Erik Wallberg to a team in the KHL (Amur). I had his sell value at the highest I could without making him upset about me putting a high price to keep bigger teams from coming in for him. Amur matched that price tag and as I have some hopes of eventually having him play for me in the NHL. I don't want him to have me as disliked staff, so I decided to take the offer. This is what he looked like right before he left us:
Image
He's more than NHL ready at this point. Had he been on my Seattle team I'd be playing him as 2nd line Center for next season as he's more than ready for that level of play. To have a guy like that in the EIHL is just amazing. It's just too bad he was away on International Duty as much as he was.

I didn't actually look at the Armada's roster at all before taking the job. As it turns out their two import players are Max Tjernström (who I've used a fair bit in Sweden) and Axel Simic (who I drafted in the Seattle save). He was 1-2 seasons away from taking over the LW role on my 4th line in that save. So it's really nice to get to use him in this save instead.

Try sign players only found by Scouts and it will be harder. :) Of course non-staff you can sign from Staff screen if not have in club. I always manage trainings, tactics and rosters. Letting it AI is making game easier. :P

I mean I always only sign players found by scouts. Except at the very beginning of Euro saves where I just look at all the Swedish youth teams and sign the guys that rolled well on their mentals and acc+speed.

Also what researcher though putting this guy in the db was a good idea?
Image
I checked, he's not a generated coach. And his PA isn't variable, it's just set that high.

Stage 2 complete, took me 3 days.
Image
So yeah, it turns out BB Armada fired their GM two days after the team won the group for the Memorial Cup as the host team. We beat Spokane 4-3 to win the Memorial Cup. I'm obviously not going to count this as winning the Memorial Cup as first of all winning it as the host team is just cheap. And also I kind of just accidentally won it after 1 game as GM. Our team isn't amazing but their goalie let in 4 goals in 21 shots, so we got absurdly lucky.

Our Defence is horrendous, but our forward core is pretty strong. I'm also going into the draft in about 2 weeks with a grand total of 0 scout reports on any player in it. So that should be "fun". Roughly half our team will gain Overaged status for next season so a fairly big rebuild is going to be needed. Since the previous GM had essentially used all his picks on players who are going to play in college we have almost no players to bring in for next season. So that's probably what got him fired.

This pretty much puts me in a spot where I need to orchestrate the lion's share of this rebuild in this year's draft. Since I have no scout reports that should be quite challenging.

I do have the 10thbest scorer of the league though - Pavel Dashkov scored 10 goals and 18 assists in 28 games. We have a long way to go if we want to reach the playoffs - almost impossible.

Re: How's it going in EHM 1? What team are you?

Draft is done, having very few very low certainty scout reports does make for a slightly different drafting experience. As usual we ran out of ranked skaters long before we ran out of picks. My final few picks went to random two-way forwards and defensive defencemen. The main focuses of this draft was picking up a future Starting goalie, a bunch of RW depth (we had two real RW on the depth charts) and a bunch of Dmen of all shapes and sizes. So in line with that thinking I picked a Center with my first pick...yeah, there were no good RW until around pick 50. Our best C also looks like he won't sign with us for his Overaged year and we have nice Center depth, but not much peak performance. But the guy I picked up looks like a very, very good 1st line Center for this level:

The player comparisons during the draft were all Jordan Staal, after picking him the dropped down to a poor man's <insert one of the best players in the EIHL>. But the post-draft comparisons are almost always pessimistic, but with how poorly scouted this draft was you never know. Regardless that kid has enough speed and two-way skill to be a very solid guy at this level. Would I have liked his Anticipation and Creativity to be higher? Yes. But with how high his skill level is it shouldn't be too much of an issue. The other options were a deadly Sniping Center who was massively injury prone and an even more defensive center with better technicals but no offensive role. This guy has a two-way game so he should be pitching in offensively too. His hiddens are very nearly perfect as well, based on having snippets for Consistency, Decisions, Important Matches, Mellow (1 Aggression, very high chance of high Temperament), Strong Character as well as the mentals to be a perfect captain at this level. Then add in his speed and there should be no way for him to fail at this level.

This is what the draft looked like in it's entirety:

I had to put even more focus than usual on picking players scouted as consistent. SInce I only had 1-2 "light" scout reports on the players I had reports on at all, I couldn't count on players with neither "needs to improve consistency" or any of the consistency snippets to actually be in the 8-11 mid range that dodges them both. The odds of the guys with no mention actually being inconsistent is way too high in a draft like this. So in some cases I passed up the potential BPA for a slightly worse consistent performer.

There was only a single consistent goalie in the entire draft, and he was a Standup goalie. Not to mention he got picked way early. The guy I picked up had the best mentals of any goalie in the draft and reasonable enough technicals and physicals to reach the needed skill level to be a solid major-junior goalie. I just hope he doesn't have low consistency, but it's entirely possible because of how few reports I had on him.
