A Carolina Hurricanes story

Post by cecede123 »

So I decided to go on a journey with the Carolina Hurricanes. This is my first try at it since EHM07. This introduction post will explain how I will work :

First, english is not my first language ! Don't be surprise if some sentences sounds a bit weird, it's not intended !

I'll do updates every time we go through a month in the game.

I'll try to put the presentation as friendly as possible for your eyes, with text and screenshot of the game !

I play with the 9,6 DB
------------------------------

The majority of my saves in EHM are done with my favorite two teams : The Canadiens and the Blue Jackets. For this story, I wanted to have more of a challenge. My choice was made between 3 struggling teams : the Canes, the Devils and the Red Wings : I eliminated New Jersey right away since there's already a blog with this team going on. Finally, a coin flip landed me the Hurricanes !

Welcome to this special show breaking down the different deals that may happens today in the NHL !

Welcome to this special edition "Transaction Deadline 2017" from Hockey Central.

Today, we will bring back to you the first movements of personnel to have on this fateful day.

Indeed, it is today, on February 23, 2017, 3pm that the trading market will close for the rest of the year. This is the opportunity for some teams to get assets for the playoffs, while for others, they'll have the opportunity to replenish their bank of prospects and choices in the draft.

Already, negotiations are well under way and two deals have taken place over the past few days.
The Boston Bruins acquired defender Travis Hamonic for Daniel Vladar, Danton Heinen and Jesse Gabrielle. This move comes with the acquisition of Brian Campbell earlier this year, solidifying the defensive brigade of the Bruins. For their part, the Islanders are ranked last of the Eastern Association, so this movement is not surprising.

Yesterday, on the 22nd, a minor trade occured between the LA Kings and the Arizona Coyotes. Los Angeles receive Chris Mueller and Kyle Capobianco's rights in return for Austin Wagner's rights, and 4th and 5th round picks in 2017.

So gentlemen, our first transaction of the day has just been announced. The Tampa Bay Lightning acquires RW Jesper Fast and Tyler Wall rights straight from the Rangers, who receive the rights to Brett Howden, as well as 2nd and 3rd round picks at the next draft. This year, Fast had accumulated 14 points in 51 games, while the former Lightning's first-round pick had a 60-point crop in 61 games with Moose Jaw in the Juniors.

Image
Jesper Fast

Another transaction has just been announced, and it is not a small one. The Islanders continue their spring run-off by exchanging Thomas Greiss and David Quenneville's rights in St. Louis, which sends Evan Fitzpatrick's rights, their first picks in 2017, as well as their first and second round picks in 2018 to Brooklyn. In my opinion, the Blues have paid a lot , especially since they already have Jake Allen in front of the goals! A very nice exchange for Garth Snow that will help his franchise a lot for the future. With Sherbrooke, in the QJMHL, Fitzpatrick managed 20 wins in 47 games, while Greiss presented a 4-10-2 record with the poor Islanders.

It was a few minutes later that another deal was announced: The Blue Jackets sent striker Brandon Dubinsky, author of 39 points in 58 games, to the same Blues in return for Ivan Barbashev and Robby Fabbri. Another interesting move by Doug Armstrong, who believes in his chances in playoffs. Fabbri has collected 21 points so far this season, while Barbashev produced at a hell pace in AHL.

Image
Brandon Dubinsky

Let's move on to an exchange between the Stars and the Leafs. They swapped two of their defenders: Connor Carrick is in Texas, while Julius Honka heads for Toronto. Both players have mainly played in the AHL this season.

Let's stay in Canada, while Montreal wanted to improve their defense. They acquired Fedor Tyutin, in addition to the rights of Quebecer Jean-Christophe Beaudin. In return, the Habs will have to hand over Bobby Farnham, the second round pick in 2017 (WSH) and their third-round pick in 2017. Tyutin has 12 points in 54 games at the Avalanche. Farnham plays in AHL.

Finally, the last move of the day was made by DG Dumas of the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes traded forward Bryan Bickell to the Tampa Lightning, in return for defense specialist Brian Boyle. Bickell had a season of 14 points, while Boyle had a 7-point record.

Image
Brian Boyle

That's all for the 2017 deal deadline, a day with little but big player movements around the league. It remains to be seen which teams will stand out as winners of this day!

Offseason #1 : The Draft

June 18th 2017 : The draft lottery was held today and for the second consecutive year, the Toronto Maple Leafs will advance first on the podium. They finished the season in 22nd place in the NHL. This is a major leap for this team. Senators will be the second to speak, having jumped seven places in this lottery. Finally, the poor Islanders, dead last in the league this year, will be the third to go on the stage this year.

June 20th 2017 : : Warren Foegele today signed his first professional contract with the Hurricanes.
It is also today that Michael Leighton was awarded the trophy Baz Bastien handed over to the best goalkeeper of the AHL. In regular season, he had a record of 49 wins, 21 defeats and 6 defeats in overtime, for an average of 2.40 and a stopping percentage of 903, rewarding Charlotte Checkers with 7 shutouts.

June 22nd 2017 : A minor exchange took place today, as the Blue Jackets acquired Adam Lowry from Winnipeg. In return, Columbus had to cede Justin Scott and fourth round choices in 2017 and 2018. Also, the Islanders have signed free agent Nick Spaling to a contract.

June 24th 2017 : The Islanders and Oilers each traded a defender, swapping Thomas Hickey and Brandon Davidson.

The dream of hundreds of young players now begins in Chicago, as the 30 teams will select among the best amateur players in the world. Who will be selected first between Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier? We'll know right now, since Lou Lamoriello is on the stage.

Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select, from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the OHL Nolan Patrick.

It is now Pierre Dorion who is at the microphone to announce the selection of the Sens.

On behalf of the Senators, from Halifax in QMJHL, I am proud to announce the selection of Nico Hischier as our first pick.

With the 3rd overall pick, the Islanders are proud to select Gabe Vilardi from Windsor of the OHL

It was in the 30th place that Cecede Dumas will speak the first time for the Canes.

We are proud to select, from St.Cloud University, Ryan Poehling!

Image

There is the rest of the 1st round :

Image
Image

Rest of our draft
2nd round (#47) RW William Knierim from Miami of the NCHC, (6ft3 209 pounds, PowerForward)
2nd round (#60) RD Christian Huntley from Quebec of the Q (5ft10, offensive Dman seen as future top4)
3rd round (#63) C Nick Suzuki from Owen Sound of the OHL (A long shot, is 6ft)
3rd round (#71) (From Derek Ryan trade with DAL) RW D'Artagan Joly from Baie Comeau of the Q (6ft2, could develop in a good bottom 6 player)
3rd round (#90) LD Max Gildon of the USNTDP (Defensive Dman, a long shot)
4th round (#120) LW Rotislav Hrabak from Paradubice (Maybe a steal in this draft, big 6ft6 LW projected like Milan Lucic)
5th round (#125) C Robert Blugers from the NAHL (Another long shot, his mental stats are pretty darn good, playmaker seen as a future 2nd liner)
6th round (#180) G Olivier Lafrenière from Ottawa in the OHL (I like to add depth in our goalie system)
7th round (#210) LD Gvido Jansons from NAHL ( Overager, he can play right now in my AHL team since I will let walk some older players, offensive Dman)
