I have not tried a save using these rules yet but I wanted to think about ways to make the game more difficult for myself and maybe others, if you find the game too hard. If you have a hard time winning championships then this guide is not for you.
Rule one - internal cap of no more that 65 million for the NHL
There are plenty of teams that are over that cap limit so there will be a rule in place to give you time to get under the 65 million dollar cap, assuming you're over to begin with. By January 1st of the 1st season you need to have a cap hit of no more than 70 million. By opening night of the 2nd season you need to be under 65 million. This gives you over a year in game time to be cap complient. You can set your guide lines however you'd like, this is just the first thing that came to my mind. There should be a penalty if you're not cap complient. If I miss a deadline my highest paid player must be placed on waivers. Because of this, don't go over the cap. I mean you can make your own rule but having a cap of only 65 million is a start.
Rule 2-Small penalty for picking up free agents. Lets face it's very easy to pick up a bunch of players in free agency and improve your team. You can still pick up as many players in the free agency as you'd like as long as you stay under the 65 million dollar internal cap. However to make you focus more on building your team through the draft, every million you spend in free agency there is a 50% cap hit penalty. For example you want to pick up Tavares. He wants 10 million a year. You offer him a 5 year deal worth 10 million per year. This means it would cost you 10 million on your cap for his salary per year then another 5 million as a cap penalty that will be in effect over the term of his contact. So basically you'd only have a 60 million dollar internal cap for the next 5 seasons to work with then it would go back up assuming you didn't make any more changes. This makes it super difficult to pick up superstars in the off season. Makes you rely on your own players more. So your best bet if you must pick up free agents is to try and grab cheaper ones so it will cost you less.
Cap penalties will not count towards your RFA's or UFA's that played with your team the prior season unless they were traded away during the season and you want them back. Be honest with your self when it comes to giving guys contacts. For example McDavid is a free agent and you think he's worth around 12 million per year but he's only asking for 5 million. Give him what you think he should earn if you want to make the game more realistic. Sometimes players in the game ask for contracts that don't refect the player that they are. If you don't want to follow this rule exactly you can just meet their demands of what they want ever though you think they are worth more.
Rule 3 Trading- If you put a player on the block or use the "offer to all" option to can accept any offer the AI gives you within reason. Use your judgement. If Edmonton offers me McDavid for Matt Martin, this is a trade you should say no to, no matter how hard it would be to turn down it's just not realistic.
Rule 4 Coaching- You can coach the team yourself if you'd like but you have to leave training and tactics to your assistant GM. Everything else you can be in control of.
Rule 5 Your pending UFA's and RFA's. As I said earlier the players in this game don't always ask for the money they should. Be honest with yourself and give them a contact they deserve if you feel they are not asking for enough. This is not a rule you need to go by if you don't want to be but it's all about making the game harder.
